Nothing else really matter right now. Is Smith going to get a century today?

Quote
Archer to Smith, no run, oh dear! He's been clattered here by the short ball. He's down. This is nasty. Took him on the unprotected part of the neck. The medics are out there straightaway, from both sides, and the England players have immediately gone to Smith. These are not scenes you want to see. Smith is lying on his back in the crease as he gets seen to by medical staff. Everyone will take the utmost care here with Smith. He's standing up again. He looks dazed. Talking to the doctor now. Will be going through concussion tests. Looks as though he's retiring hurt. Smith walks off Lord's to warm applause

Not looking good. I suspect Australian can not go much from here. This is the best chance England can have in this test.

Another wicket down. Still the good thing is that Smith is there. Australia is still trailing by 94 runs and only 4 wickets in hand. In test cricket losing tailenders in only few runs is very possible. This test still has not died despite having only one and half day left.

Imagine Australia lost the 4 wickets in the next few overs only adding few runs. Say England find themselves having a lead of 60 runs. They will bat today and will score very quickly and if they can add 200 runs and if they ask Australia to bat again in the morning giving a target of 260 runs, then in the fifth day it's not very easy to chase or even bat for the whole day.

Let's just hope that there will be no rain anymore.

Probably no one cares when some Australian wicket goes down. As long as Smith is there, he can get Australia to a good total. Last time, he made good partnerships with the no.10 and no.11 batsmen.  Grin

BTW, have the Brits forgot the fact that today is the 4th day? Pacers are doing most of the work and the only spinner (Jack Leach) has just 7 overs to his name out of the total of 75.

AUS vs ENG

Same story with OZ. Once again their bowlers were struggling to get tailenders out. Here I think Starc's deadly's yorker and swing comes in play against the tailenders.

Right now English Camp looks happy with 225 runs lead on the board and Warner sitting in the dugout.

I thought of placing another hedge bet on Sri Lanka and New Zealand too, but the combined odds were pretty poor and it most probably might not end in a draw. Lets see what happens.

Correct SL vs NZ game is going towards a result, no doubt about that and if kiwis manage to put 225-250 runs lead then SL need some brave innings to win this game.

This pitch is turning out to be a gold mine for spinners. 2 spinners already took fifer for their respective team. You can imagine what will happen during the last inning.

According to current scenario 150-180 runs target for Sri Lankans? Kiwis top order failed and Ross taylor gone as well.
Sirilanka is good team who gives effort to win so according to me it is not big deal for them to make 150 in test match. In test match players don’t take much stress but they only give their best and sirilankan team has allot of New player taking New players is not easy they takes allot of trials and then choose good players only

SL really have a shown of resistance in their second innings and this has help them to make 133 for no loss and now just require 135 runs and should be a easy win for them and win. NZ would be very unhappy as they are not able to take any wickets and batting fourth is not that easy and when someone like SL is playing where they are still finding to have the right players .

Looks like Steve Smith is going to make another century today. At the end of the first session of today's play he is unbeaten on 53, with Tim Paine at 21 not out for company. But now this match is important only for statistical purposes. One and half days of play remain and there is virtually zero chance of getting a result. But still, it will be good if Smith makes another century.

Even if Smith scores a century, they need 103 more runs to chase plus need runs to put on board for England to chase. I don't think he would even be interested in this match as the result is pretty clear. It will just be an achievement for him instead of the team. England bowlers are looking bored now to take wickets and if they want to play again for their second innings, they should take Paine's wicket soon.

71 overs remain for today and there is a good chance that England will start their second innings today itself. Also, no rain is predicted for today and tomorrow. So in total, we have 161 overs. The only chance of a result here is if England collapses during the second innings. If ENG could make only around 100 runs in 40 overs, then the Australians may be able to chase that tomorrow.

As of now SL looking secure with 60+ runs partnership for 1st wicket. We are yet to see how SL face Ajaz Patel because Satner not doing much right now.
133 without losing any wicket. Sri Lanka is at the top. Their failure of wrapping up the Nz's tailenders did not create any problem at all. From here Sri Lanka can hope for a big win against ranking #2 Test nation. NZ did not play up to the mark in this Test.

In the other match which I am following of course, Australia is not in a good position. The hope is that Smith is in the pitch still.

Sri Lanka are around half way through, and they still have 10 wickets in hand. Dimuth Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimanne have built a strong partnership and the Kiwi spin bowling attack looks quite teethless as of now (Somerville, Patel, Santner). I think they should give more spells to Boult and Southee. Spin attack has failed till now.

Srilanka should win this match at Galle and i think it will be another upset. Consider the fact that NewZealand was the runner up in the worldcup and srilanka was a not a strong team. Although this is another format of cricket, but still Newzealnad was favorable to win this one before the start of this test.

With all due respect Bhai.

We shouldn't use WC "runner up" example here at all. As you already know very well that its different format. But if we are using "upset" in term of Test Ranking, then it makes sense because SL and NZ ranks 6th and 2nd respectively.

So Sri Lanka failed to wrap up tailenders cheaply, with this Kiwis manage to put 285 runs on the board. At one point kiwis were struggling on 124ish/6 and last 4 wickets alone scored 160ish runs, this tells you story about how bad were Lankan bowlers against the lower order.

Srilanka now needs a couple of brave innings to win this match. Atm, this match has ingredients to make it thriller if both teams put a fight, let's see.

Pitch is not easy to play with lot's of moisture, that's why Aussies odds are so high, and draw price is so low. Aussies will try to play as much as they can even they won't make much score to reduce the possibilities of defeat.

With quick 4 wickets OZ are in little trouble as score is just 80 on board and still they trial by 178 runs . For OZ they would be happy that Smith is on crease and they would be hoping that he plays again magical innings which would help then to recover and win the match .

I don't see a chance for Aus to win this match with two days left and are down to 80/4 and trailing by 178 runs. Aus will most probably try to bat out the day and will look for a draw while the Eng will be try to bundle out Aus early and put some quick scores on board and will hope to bundle out Aus once again. So either it's going to be a draw and Aus leading the series or the English winning this match and leveling the series. But the probability of a draw is higher so I'll bet on it.

Don't bet for a draw now because Australia are 4 out for 80 only and if England are able to take wickets quickly, they might end up with 80 runs lead. And they could make another 200 in today's day which will give them around 280 lead. England will have full 5th day to take 10 wickets to win this match. Although this seems a little difficult but that how the winning teams thinks to win. Wink

I wish you good luck for your bet by the way.
Thanks. Looks like it might end up as a draw thanks to the rain unless Australia loses their way. I really do hope that indoor stadiums get constructed to tackle this problem in the near future. Hoping England can continue picking up wickets at regular intervals.

I agree. This could be the reason why the Australian batsmen are having a hard time out there. England will really need to apply a ton of pressure if they wish to win this one.

I still think that the match is in Australia's favour at the moment as Smith and Wade are still there, if these two can put on a big partnership like they did in the previous test match then Australia can take a 100+ run lead and make it very tough for England to survive on the last day. The rain needs to stay away though as right now it is looking like it will be a draw.

Australia made a big mistake by not selecting Mitchell Starc. England could recover from 138/6 to 258, because none of the Australian bowler could clean up the tail. If Starc was playing, then he could have mopped up the lower middle order and the tail in quick time. But he was not playing, and players such as Woakes, Archer and Broad made significant partnerships that could prove crucial for a low scoring match. For Australia, Lyon once again proved inefficient against the top and middle order. If England could restrict Australia below 250, then they have a great chance of leveling the series. Only one man stands between them and a victory, and his name is Steven Smith.

Quite true that Starc could have made the difference in getting the tail quickly out . But Oz might want to give chance to other players as well and they are already 1-0 ahead in series . So maybe this could be strategy and if required might be back in 3rd test .

They can give chance to the other players once they are up 3-0. Now it is too early to leave your number one bowler from the starting XI. It is going to be very harsh for Mitchell Starc. He may be demotivated now and may be even thinking about retirement. How you will be feeling, if you are left out of the team despite being the top performer?

Australia still needs 178 runs to gain a lead in the first innings. The English lower order and tail put in 120+ runs, and this is going to prove very crucial during this match. Aussies are 4 down, but I don't think they care about that. The only concern for them is whether Steven Smith is still there or not. And he is batting on 13 n.o. I have never ever seen the Australian batting segment depending so much on a single player.
