It's like liking somebody's post you agree with or that's constructive. I saw I have 200 smerit and it expires if unused but it doesn't mention a date or anything. However, still I don't like this concept as it looks like the forum turned into some social media website where merits=likes. Glad that demerit is not possible else I wouldn't imagine what would be the state then.

It is more like a "Thank you system" to every poster who made a good resourceful contribution and not like a like button. Anyway, all of this new MERIT SYSTEM is good as long as it is not being "abused".

Whoa! Seems like lot has changed over-night.

There will be a shit load of "favoritism".
This.As I'm going through the thread,I can already see it happening.

Here's what's next : Alt's giving merits to each other.A lot of new threads in Meta about how Merit works.Let's see how this turns out.

EDIT : theymos, are you planning to introduce a business model down the line which enables members to buy certain amount of Merits if they run out ? Technically, can people run out of merits ?  Huh

You're not a legendary yet. I don't know what your post is about but if you keep it updated then I'm certainly fine with that. The post I'm referring to was not yours. But is this the sort of thing we're going to see now. People running around patting all their friends on the back for posts they did years ago. Is that really what it's supposed to be?
I've wasted 21 sMerit on satoshi. I'm sorry. He's not even my friend, I just felt like he deserved it (In my defense, he isnt a legendary yet).
I've still got over 300 sMerlit left and I promise to use them more considered.

Are there controls in place to prevent someone from granting merit to their own post?
Yes, try it.

1) Sending merits to another member will result in deduction from the merit of original poster ?
Read the OP, read the first reply with a dumbed down explanation.

3) Can merit be given for thread responses also or is it only for new threads opened by  a member ?
Any post.

2) Do you have some protection to prevent buying and selling of sendable  merits ?
It's restricted. Banhammer, I guess?!

Wow, what a brilliant idea. Great work, Theymos and crew!

A thought just occurred to me which I'm sure occurred to the Admin crew before instilling this new merit system, but I'll ask it anyway to make sure it's covered.

Are there controls in place to prevent someone from granting merit to their own post?

I know this is all new and shiny and so people are going to play with it.. But giving merit to someone who's already legendary for a post they did 2-3 years ago?

You're over thinking it. Merit isn't worth something to the account holder once they've reached top status levels. Merit is a gift you can give to others to reward their contribution to this community.

It's not any sort of "gift" when it's tied to a person being able to rank up their account. There's a limited amount of it available every month. So giving some of that to someone that doesn't "need it", isn't really being responsible with it.

I liked this new concept and it will certainly help to make this a  stronger community with less fluff. Some doubts regarding this :

1) Sending merits to another member will result in deduction from the merit of original poster ?

2) Do you have some protection to prevent buying and selling of sendable  merits ?

3) Can merit be given for thread responses also or is it only for new threads opened by  a member ?

But giving merit to someone who's already legendary for a post they did 2-3 years ago? Really?
I got merit for a thread I made in 2016 regarding a problem that is still relevant. The thread itself is on the first page of this very section and is updated (edited) to stay relevant.
Do I have to give those merits back? If so, where do I send them.
I'm sorry for hogging fame off something I did years ago. Wont ever happen again.

Well I have given you 2 merits..

reason being.. you provide value here fella.. I don't need to trawl through your posts to know that. if anyone complains they can fuck off.. you should of been legendary ages ago!

If some good ol boys are going to use it to give ppl that don't need it even more merit, then what use is it for those that can actually use it? At the very least I would strongly suggest removing that as a possibility. In fact, since people are incapable of acting responsibly, I would suggest coming up with some scheme where a person has to spread it around to people with different ranks.

Well... But I do not understand. If someone has 10 twinks. Why do not they just give merits to the main account?
If a person A gives 1 merit to a person B, does it mean that the person A lose 1 merit from the profile?
Reason A: because you only have a limited amount of sMerit available to send.
Reason B: Because that would be fucking obvious and althunters would be all over your ass.

Or why do people not send trust to/with all their alt accounts? Same situation, really.

There will be a shit load of "favoritism" from the collectibles section as a large % of us all socialize off forum..

the Alt master turned Alt Hunter QS will be chucking up REP threads left right and center.. LUTPIN=LAUDA=MINI=ZEPHER=ACTMYNAME=TMAN=MITCHELL=LAUDA etc etc...

he will just judge us by his own standards, even though we are more likely to read each others posts more carefully

Sorry, I was lazy

Where's that demerit button when you need one...  Grin

A possible workaround for no demerit button is to chastise the low-quality poster with a Merit Nazi "NO MERIT FOR YOU!" post private message.

Not quite like that. Person B will increase his merit points (shown on profile) and also receive 0.5 sMerit (sendable Merit) & person A will lose 1 sMerit. Merit points on your profile cannot be decreased.
Oh, it is more clear now, thanks! But another question. Will Person B get 1Merit and 0.5sMerit or 0.5 Merit and 0.5 sMerit if person A sends 1 Merit to him?
I understand that.

Oh forgot to mention that person B will get 1 Merit & 0.5 sMerit.

I can't express how happy i'm from this decision. The decision will stop every crap and off topic poster from getting rank up and all genuine members of the community will able to get what they deserve. The decision will make the community stronger.
Bulk Account farming will not be possible anymore and the person has to put a lot of efforts to rank up their alts which will be time consuming and irritating for them. Smiley

Will deleting my post with merit points will also lead to the deletion of all the merit points? that will be only question from my side. Hope someone able to answer this one.

Thanks admin for implementing such a great ad to the forum.

Merit points will stay as theymos said

The merit is not undone if the post is deleted.

As far as I know from reading this topic, merit points is locked after u achieved it, lets say you reach 1000 merit points and then some of your posts are deleted by mods, then your merit will stay at 1000.
I guess it applies too if you delete your own post, but i believe mods or admin will know if you delete it on your own then making the same post again to farm merit points by deceiving people. So, dont do that.
