If you can get the system working we have some interesting numbers.

16 x 5970 @ 390 MH/s per GPU = 12480 MH/s
At the current difficulty and at a value of $4.8 per BTC would see break even in less than 6 months.
This includes $1200 for the system build and $400 per 5970.

16 X 7990 @ 600 MH/s per GPU = 19200 MH/s
At the current difficulty and at a value of $4.8 per BTC would see break even in 7 months.
This includes $1200 for the system build and $849 per 7990

It would be nice if it can be hashing before the halving.

Except you cant buy 5970s, and 7990s will be dropping in about 6 months.... so buy the 5970s now, sell them, and replace them with 7990s Wink

Nope, can't. Almost all the used ones on ebay are owned by insane overclocker gamer types, and have done dumb shit like throw out the stock hsf in favor of improperly installing a wc block that probably cracked the dies.

Total YMMV territory.


Huh.  I have purchased at least 8 off of Ebay, and every single one of them is working great.  The only issue I had was a bad fan, and that fixed with a $39 fan and about 20 minutes work. 

Have you had bad experiences personally, or are you simply speculating?

See it the kind of thing that makes "super projects" cool.  Who cares if it isn't the cheapest solution.  Sometimes you just have to have fun and figuring out how to supply almost 7KW of electrical power and get rid of 24,000 BTU/h of heat is everyone's idea of fun?    Right? Smiley

No.  Even a 3MH/W you are looking at 6.5 KW. I doubt OP has a 6.5KW PSU but if he did at 120V it would be 54 amps.  Not even 50A circuit could handle that.  

240V would be fine.  ~26A.

Likely one would want 2x30A circuits and 2+ PSUs.
I have a thread somewhere about wiring 30A 240V circuit up.

See it the kind of thing that makes "super projects" cool.  Who cares if it isn't the cheapest solution.  Sometimes you just have to have fun and figuring out how to supply almost 7KW of electrical power and get rid of 24,000 BTU/h of heat is everyone's idea of fun?    Right guys? Smiley

No. That is a gimmick and not 24/7 recommended. Heck its not even 2 hour recommended. Without something to swiftly move all the oil quickly across hotspots, it'll just overheat. Plus, all the oil will just soak up heat. It won't dissipate it. Thats what radiators are for in water cooling.

Well the point is there would still be pumps and radiator.  Using oil just eliminates the $100+ waterblocks for each GPU which is the bulk of the cost for any watercooling.  Not that I am endorsing oil cooling, the mess, the complications with troubleshooting, the warranty issues, and the loss of any resale value make it a non starter.

Well, yes. lol. Anyway whats the point in so much lan cards?

Cheap DDOS mitigation and firewall box sitting between the core router and certain customers in a DC. No one is really selling a ready made box for this task, even high end Cisco routing fabric boxes aren't suited for deep packet inspection. Although, if I was actually making a box like this, I'd use a bunch of Freescale QorIQ T4* series chips and use their own fabric provide everything and shove it in a 2U box.

*The P4 chips, the octocore 1.5ghz 64bit PPC predecessor of the T4, have 2 10gbit NICs and 8 1gbit NICs, hardware DSPs/ASICs dedicated to deep packet inspection acceleration, and a routing fabric that can be used to build a communications bus between multiple SoCs; so you could easily build a box with 4 of these and be able to handle DDOS mitigation for something like 80 gbit of incoming traffic, front ending 32 1gbit client boxes (which themselves can be maxing out at 64 gbit full duplex) without blinking.

That would also be about a $10k box if mass produced and sold retail.

Plenty of space. I allowed 1.5 slot spaces (about 1 inch) for each card. Have you ever heard of Delta fans? About 100 decibels each, but they will provide all the cooling anyone could ever hope for  in a 120mm package.
And how are you going to overcome the limitation of number of gpus per one system? Whats the total cost? When do you plan to run it? Interesting to see this thing in action with temp stats vs clocks and mhash/$ efficiency.
Try reading the thread. Lots of salient information. Virtualization is only one factor in this complicated endeavor.

Anyways, for ultimate density I'd want to watercool 18x 5970s. Damn that would be epic. With proper waterblocks, they could all fit in a 4 U rack case, except for the hoses and shit.
