Mexico Approves Extradition of Drug Lord 'El Chapo' Guzman to U.S.

Mexico's Foreign Relations Department ruled Friday that the extradition of convicted drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to the United States can go forward.

The process can still be appealed, meaning it could be weeks or months before the Sinaloa cartel leader may be sent to the U.S., where he is wanted in multiple jurisdictions on charges related to drug trafficking and organized crime.

Guzman's lawyers now have 30 days to appeal the decision.

The department said Friday in a statement that the United States has provided "adequate guarantees" that Guzman would not face the death penalty. Mexico has abolished capital punishment and does not extradite its citizens if they face possible execution.

Friday's ruling covered an extradition request from a Texas federal court related to charges of conspiracy to import and distribute cocaine and marijuana, money-laundering, arms possession and murder, and another extradition request from a federal court in California.

In all, Guzman faces charges from seven U.S. federal prosecutors including in Chicago, New York, Miami and San Diego.

Earlier this week Jose Refugio Rodriguez, one of Guzman's lawyers, said that if the government approved extradition they would pursue an injunction.

"We are going to do it, but not right away, because it's a process you have to fight with arguments," he said. "We have 30 days.

Massive .50 caliber rifle used to shoot down helicopters found inside El Chapo's Mexican hideout was sold through government Fast and Furious program
Fast and Furious program was designed to take down cartel arms dealers
Involved ATF agents intentionally selling weapons illegally to smugglers
Guns were then tracked south over border and used to make arrests
However, agency ultimately lost track of 1,400 of 2,000 weapons it sold
.50 caliber rifle would have been used to down helicopters, agents say

Hope they put some cones around that escape tunnel, If he falls in it before he is ready to jump in it this time, there could be an expensive personal injury law suit.

Mexican authorities snared drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman in a bloody raid Friday, recapturing one of the world's most notorious and slippery criminals.

"Mission Accomplished," President Enrique Peña Nieto announced via Twitter. "We have him."

Members of Mexico's navy caught Guzman in an operation at about 4:30 a.m. (6:30 a.m. ET) in the coastal city of Los Mochis in Sinaloa state, a senior law enforcement official in Mexico told CNN.

Several people aligned with Guzman died in the raid, the official said. The Mexican navy put the number of dead at five, with six others arrested. No navy personnel were killed, and only one was injured.

From this story it would appear that Mexico is ready willing and eager to extradite him now before they get more egg on their faces.

You mean there is a new puppetmaster in Mexico, and they don't want to disappoint him?

Drug Lord, Cops, Influence and Money. We all watch some movies to see where this is going. Well i dont mean to judge but they should cut off el chapo's money business because thats the only way to maintain him in jail. His business is still running i'm guessing.

Even if you send millions of soldiers to Mexico, that will not solve the drug business. There is only one solution to this. And that is to legalize drugs. As long as there is demand in the United States (for cocaine, heroin, and LSD), the drug cartels will continue to smuggle contraband to the States. If you take out one cartel, that will be quickly replaced by another one.

Ben Rhodes, a top national security adviser to President Barack Obama, said Friday if a U.S. prison is good enough for El Chapo, it’s good enough for Guantanamo Bay detainees who require indefinite detention.

Rhodes noted that bipartisan support exists for extraditing El Chapo, a notorious drug kingpin in Mexico, to the U.S., though that same support is absent when discussing the move of Gitmo detainees to U.S. facilities.

Holding him is a headache.
Previously, they wanted him to serve time in Mexico for his crimes.
After 2 escapes, they want him to get out as quickly as possible.

If the Mexican authorities does not have enough resources to hold him, then they should just request the Americans to take care of him. After all, El Chapo was smuggling most of his drug supplies to the United States. I am not saying that the American prisons are 100% reliable, but when compared to the Mexican ones, they are far better.

How El Chapo Was Finally Captured, Again

MEXICO CITY — Stripped to his undershirt and covered in filth, the world’s most notorious drug lord dragged himself out of the sewers and into the middle of traffic.

Disoriented from his long trudge underground, with gun-toting marines on his heels, he found himself standing across the street from a Walmart. Joaquín Guzmán Loera, the kingpin known across the globe as El Chapo, would have to improvise. His cavalry was not coming.

He and his top lieutenant commandeered a white Volkswagen from a passing motorist, but only a few blocks later, the car became engulfed in smoke, witnesses said. Desperate for another vehicle, the two men spotted a red Ford Focus at a traffic light, driven by a woman with her daughter and 5-year-old grandson.

“Get out of the car now,” said the lieutenant, his weapon trained on the woman as he lifted the door handle, witnesses said. She complied, prying the child from the back seat and leaving her belongings in the car. Politely, the lieutenant handed over her purse before speeding off.

The Mexican marines had been on Mr. Guzmán’s trail for more than six months, ever since he humiliated the nation by escaping its most secure prison through a tunnel that led into the shower floor of his cell.

The chase had led them into the remote wilds of the Golden Triangle, on the border of Durango and Sinaloa states, an area where Mr. Guzmán is revered. He evaded multiple raids by the Mexican authorities, including a close brush after he sat for an interview with the American actor Sean Penn.

But it had come at a cost. The authorities had swept through 18 of his homes and properties in his native lands. Days on end in the inhospitable mountains, where even a billionaire like Mr. Guzmán was forced to rough it, left him yearning for a bit of comfort.

The USA has a lot to answer for around the world regarding destructive prohibition. Billionaire drug lords like El Chapo Guzman are the direct product of the US failed war on drugs.

El Chapo's family tried to trademark his likeness for branded merchandise

The cartel kingpin’s lawyers also filed papers to register Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán’s name for a biopic, a vanity project that eventually led to his downfall

The family of recaptured cartel kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán tried to trademark his name for the purposes of producing merchandise including clothing, watches, walking canes and even Christmas tree ornaments according to applications lodged with the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI).

His lawyers also tried to trademark his name as part of a plan for making a motion picture on his larger-then-life story – a vanity project that eventually led to his downfall, Mexican media reported on Tuesday.

Guzmán’s lawyers filed papers with IMPI to register the name El Chapo Guzmán in preparation for making a biopic, journalist Carlos Loret de Mola wrote in the Mexican newspaper El Universal. IMPI rejected the request.

Previously, Alejandrina Gisselle Guzmán, believed to be Guzmán’s daughter, filed requests with IMPI in 2010 and 2011 to trademark the names “Joaquin El Chapo Guzmán” and “El Chapo Guzmán”.

A series of 12 requests were made to register the names, which would be applied to items like hats, toys, sporting goods, saddlery and whips. It also asked for trademarks in services such as publicity and “commercial administration”.

The last crime boss that Sean Penn had an interview with before El Chapo didn´t fare so well. Rest in peace Tony  Grin

Holy crap! I did not know that! That's not a good precedent if we can say it, however I'm very curious about what the US will do to Sean Penn if they will do something or if everything will naturally slip under the carpet.
