Cyprus Plans Reopening International Travel

Cyprus opens up its borders and airports to tourists from all over the world starting March 1. Foreign arrivals must provide a negative coronavirus test result. In addition to that, visitors from red zones will have to take another test once they arrive at the island.

“This means that passengers will be able to visit Cyprus without quarantine restrictions, unless they test positive for COVID-19 on arrival”, said Deputy Tourism Minister Savvas Perdios.

He reminded that Cyprus will lift the travel restrictions for 56 countries. They will be separated into the following categories: EU countries; EU economic zone countries (Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein); other countries, listed in the EU Council guidelines from 30 June 2020 on non-essential travel to the EU; Great Britain, Russia, Israel, Ukraine, Belarus, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Israel Ready To Begin Restoring International Travel If 25% Of Population Vaccinated

“Currently 25% of people in Israel have received their vaccine. We can finally begin planning the restoration of international tourism” — said the press secretary of the Ministry of Tourism.

The Minister has also noted that reinstating foreign air travel will depend on the creation of bubble tourism — separating tourist groups into bubbles. Before boarding the plane tourists will have to confirm their health status with a “green passport”, certificate of recovery or a COVID-19 negative test result.

Orit Farkash-Hacohen has also suggested opening hotels immediately, on the condition that visitors provide health status certificates and hotels restrict access to public spaces.

Primary Travel Changes In 2021

Experts have explained how hotels will be attracting clients during the pandemic. The Sun has published an article quoting experts who weighed in on the current state of the tourism industry and the coronavirus pandemic restrictions that have been placed upon it.

“The majority of long-haul destinations are expected to remain off the cards, until at least the end of the year. This includes Australia, New Zealand and the US, all of which have closed their borders to the UK - the Australian government has warned that border closures may be in place until March 2022”

Experts believe that hotels will try to appeal to clients using special offers and free nights if they book a longer stay. A lot of accommodation facilities will feature contactless reception desks. This will eliminate check-in and check-out lines. Experts have also noted that traditional keys might also fade out and we will instead use smartphone apps to unlock rooms. Getting into rooms will take a special code in the app. The way meals are served will also be different: hotels might ditch buffet and Swedish board in favor of food delivery or a la carte service. Analysts are convinced that travelers will plan less trips, and short trips will reign supreme. Lots of clients already prefer renting apartments instead of hotels.

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts Private Jet Flights

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts is a Canadian company, a luxury hotel chain operator that has placed a lot of hope on launching its new business jet — Airbus A321LR.

Shelley Cline, president of TCS World Travel (the tour operator leasing the aircraft on behalf of Four Seasons) is quoted as saying:

“In these unprecedented times, it is clear that the benefits of travelling by private jet have made this mode of travel even more desirable. Fewer people per plane, a more controlled environment, smaller airports, private or expedited customs and immigration, and the ability to make changes and pivot up to the last minute are all hallmarks of traveling by private jet and are now more important than ever”.

Christian Clerc, President, Global Operations for Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, says: «Today's travellers are choosing brands they trust to place a priority on health and safety while still offering the highest quality product. Many of our trips consistently sell out, often with repeat guests, and as travellers look ahead to the future, we expect to see the same level of interest in our 2022 itineraries”.

Britain Prepares To Move COVID-19 Patients To Hotels

Matt Hancock, the Health Secretary of Great Britain said it is a possible back-up plan that some COVID-19 patients will be transferred to hotels to free up hospital beds.

CNN reports:

“This obviously would be a further backup plan... We consider all the options,” Matt Hancock told the BBC.

He said this is a response to the growing pressure on the NHS due to the increase in COVID-19 cases.

When asked about which patients will be eligible to be sent to hotels, the Secretary said that any measures to move patients to hotels to free up bed capacity would only be done if it was appropriate, for “step-down” patients only.

Hoteliers Speak About Bizarre Things Left In Rooms In 2020

Employees of a British economy hotel chain have spoken about the weird things they found left in rooms over the past year marked by the pandemic.

A small army of nutcracker soldiers 180cm in height and security papers worth some 500,000 British pounds were among the most bizarre things hotel visitors left in rooms.

The pandemic caused a lot of wedding cancellations, first it was restrictions on the ceremony itself, then the authorities-imposed guest limit of 30. Despite these factors, room service would still find plenty of wedding-related items. For example, a money tree with stapled-on banknotes worth 10,000 British pounds.

Among other forgotten wedding gifts were a 2 meter tall white plush bear, and six human-sized nutcracker soldiers.

A stock broker forgot paper securities worth half a million pounds in a transparent sheet protector in his room. Another businessman returned to his room in search of a lucky penny he was carrying for over 40 years. One of the guests forgot a William Shakespeare costume along with a skull in his room’s wardrobe, someone else — a robot costume.

“Private Work Loft” — New Hotel Offer For Pandemic

An Amsterdam-based hotel company Zoku saw a window of opportunity when business trips and tourist visits fizzled out. The company had already been offering its lofts as a coworking / home office hybrid.

The idea is for a room to be both a workspace and a long-term living space with a bedroom and a kitchen where you can cook proper meals.

The Dutch company Zoku has always focused on one specific market segment — businesses and their employees who go on short business trips to neighbouring cities. This was their niche, and they filled it nicely! Zoku lofts are now being mostly leased to Amsterdamers.

After all, they kept working from home this whole time! Except that not every home makes a good home office. Zoku offers office apartments that have everything you might need for work and leisure: a kitchen to keep you fed, and a convertible sofa for sleeping.

Not all hotels accepted their fate in the face of the pandemic!

Bulgaria Opens Ski Season

Bulgaria’s ski resorts are once again open for tourists. The first resort to start preparing for the winter season was Bansko, one of the top tourism destinations in the country.

The opening will happen on the condition of strict compliance with health safety standards:  social distancing and masks indoors are mandatory, while restaurants can only serve takeout food and must close at 10 pm. Aerial trams get disinfected three times a day.

“This year bookings dropped by 70%. With that said, prior to the pandemic, this sector’s profits were on a steady rise. In 2019 tourism brought more than 1 billion to the budget. You can estimate the scale of the financial loss. This is why we once again hope our fellow citizens and tourists from neighbouring countries who can come here by car will support us”, says Mariana Nikolova, Minister of Tourism of Bulgaria.

Thai Hoteliers Ask Government To Ease Tourist Quarantine

President of Thai Hotels Association, Marisa Sukosol Nunphakdi, asked the Thai government to consider cancelling the mandatory two-week quarantine for foreign tourists who have been vaccinated against COVID-19, said The Bangkok Post on 9 January.

She expressed her opinion in a meeting with the Minister of Tourism, Pipat Ratchakitprakan, saying how this can be done on an individual level as well as on a country to country level, given travelers provide covid passports or vaccination passports.

Whether or not the authorities end up going that route is a complete gamble. After all, just a few days ago the Minister said that it was too early to ease restrictions or shorten the quarantine.

Spanish Tourism: Spring Tours Written Off, But There Is Hope

Foreign tourists' plans to vacation at Spanish resorts will have to be postponed until June at the earliest — this is coming from the Balearic Islands tourism authorities. The reason for this is the state of the main source of tourist traffic to Spain, namely, the United Kingdom where stricter lockdowns were put in place in response to a new coronavirus strain which is responsible for driving an increase in cases.

In an interview with The Sun, Balearic Islands Tourism Minister Iago Negueruela said they hoped mass tourism to Mallorca to pick up as soon as March, starting with Easter holidays. However, this is not how it will go.
Mallorca hotelier federation suggests that the current restrictions and lockdown measures in Europe will hold for several months. The islands also hope that by June, vaccination programs in the UK and the rest of Europe will allow the tourism sector to recover.

With that said, tourist vaccination news is reassuring: Mallorca summer tour sales are up 30%, and tour operators offer a large number of budget options to Brits.

Turkey Lays Out 2021 Tourism Expectations

It will take approximately 2 years until the tourism industry in Turkey recovers to its 2019 levels. This doesn’t mean that in 2021 tourists won’t bring any profits to the country, however. Authorities say the country will see some 25 million foreign tourists, since the coronavirus vaccine is being rolled out in both Turkey and the rest of the world. This is one of the factors that support a positive outlook.

The year of 2019 saw record-breaking figures for the number of foreign visitors to Turkey — 45 million. The last pre-corona year brought the tourism industry some $34.5 billion US in revenue. However, in the entire 11 months of 2020 the number of foreign visitors only managed to reach 12 million, showing a whopping 72% reduction.

Turkish Hoteliers Federation Chair claims that  the year of 2021 will be a successful one for the tourism industry. If not, it will at least demonstrate a trend reversal. Perhaps, in 2021 we will see tourist flow figures reach at least half of what they were in 2019.

Experts Predict Covid Tourism In 2021

In 2021 the travel industry will see a new trend arise - Covid tours.

The trend was first spotted in the European Union, and now an increasing number of countries are joining in.

People travel to resorts not far from where they live. Many such resorts have implemented so-called post-covid rehab programs.

Experts believe that this mode of travel is here to stay until we defeat the coronavirus. This will be the trend of 2021.

Cheap Air Travel And Masked Flights. How Will Tourism Look In 2021?

The departing year has become one of the most difficult ones in history for the tourism industry. Experts are unanimous in saying that it will take years to fully recover.

Nevertheless, some sectors will grow faster than others, and in 2021 might surpass their pre-crisis performance. One of these sectors is domestic tourism.

However, international tourism will begin reopening very gradually and slowly. It is not outside the realm of possibility that the industry will develop new rules, and, for example, require medical papers to travel abroad.
We are unlikely to see cheaper air travel in the near future. For now only a limited number of destinations are available, and as long as there is decreased air travel, cheap tickets are out of question.
Domestic travel provides a different outlook. Prices on domestic flights have dropped in many parts of the world. By lowering prices, airline companies are trying to attract those travelers who were cautious about travel last year.

When it comes to masks on flights, it is worth saying that they will stay for a long time, but not forever. When the pandemic is over, people will take some time to forget that masks used to make them feel safe.
