I have three of these MSI Z170A GAMING PRO CARBON boards that have died because of some of the silly LEDs on the bottom of the board being knocked off.

Any suggestions how to fix?

Why did MSI build a board with a trivial minor feature that if damaged brick's the board?

Hello, I'm new to the forum,
my configuration:
Intel Celeron G3930 7th gen(Kaby Lake)
MSI GAMING Z170A PRO CARBON
Kingston 8 GB DDR4
Intel 120GB SSD
7x Sapphire Rx 480 8GB OC (with modded bios)
EVGA Supernova 1200w

I installed the new BIOS and then installed the modded one, but every time I try to boot into windows it shows a backlit black screen and whenever I try booting a UEFI install usb it shows the windows loading circles and then backlit black screen. I've left it on for 24 hours with the same result.

Without the 4G decoding the system is fine, but whenever I try turning it on the system just does a backlit blackscreen, also I have PEG0 and PEG1 set to Gen1

What should I do? I'm really desperate right now, any help is appreciated.

I had much better luck using a Sky Lake Pentium G4400 CPU with this board and 7 GPU.  Couldn't get a Kaby Lake Celeron G3930 to work with 7 GPU.  Has anyone??  I read somewhere that Sky Lake was needed and it indeed fixed my issues.

@magnoman that is certainly a tip... where could you possibly read that?.   I am running 6xRX580 GPU and having problems with the 7th on the Celeron G3900 on Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon.    Using @creepas BIOS of course.

Operating system:Ethos
mobo:Z170A GAMING PRO CARBON (MS-7A12)
ram:4g
Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU G3900 @ 2.80GHz
drive_name: KINGSTON SV300S37A120G
GPU: 6of: XFX rx480 8g one of which is the gtr black editition.
PSU: Corsair hx1200i

Hello,
I am using Ethos and would like to run claymore with 6 gpu
hope someone could point me in th right direction here (please !)
You have to believe me here when i say that i have tried absolutley everything
i have read here but i just cannot get 6 gpu working with this motherboard.
With Claymore each gpu is at least 2 mh/s faster
With ethminer i can run 5 stable(3 days)
with both sgminer and claymore's the 6 gpu will start up and hash at 27 or so and the cut down to 4
after 1 or 2 minutes.
With sgminer it also does me the courtesy of telling me that the 2 gpu are sick then dead.
This can be with any card in any slot,it always changes.
I think somehow that that is the important part ?
All cards and risers work fine and have been checked in different slots, different risers, individually,
in groups and any combination you can think of.
All the info on here i can find i have followed.
So that's 4 gpu with claymore and sgminer,
and 5 with ethminer.
This is my first build and i have really enjoyed it so far,im looking forward to making more hopefully.
but i have now been banging my head against a brick wall for 2 weeks now(starting to make a mess)
Anyway i hope someone here has a clue for me.
Cheers !

Thanks to creepas for sharing the BIOS, it works. Also thanks to all who posted confirming kaby lake CPUs work. Was worried my cheapo i3 (a mistake I know) would blackscreen on it, like it did on the older BIOS mobo came with.

I got up to running 6 cards (waiting for parts), 1x480 MSI Armor 8GB, 5x580 MSI Armor 8GB. Issues I ran into and had to fix:
- 1 long beep 2 short beeps, black screen after flashing - flashed at least the main video card back to original bios so it could get to windows.
- wouldn't get to windows after 5th card - had to enable Gen 1 in BIOS to proceed
- flickering back to blackscreen while on windows - forgot to flash one of the cards back to original
- 1 long beep 2 short beeps when booting with 6 cards, running headless rig without a screen - not solved this yet. it boots and mines, but the dual claymore miner loses temperature control. annoying.
- heat. haven't done much about it yet. this coupled with loss of temperature control means 5 original vbios cards run about the same as 4 flashed/customized with temp control.
- PSU cables are way too short for this. Got enermax 1700W platinum on the side of mobo - the 8pin cables can only reach 4 closest risers so needed to find and order 3 extension cables off aliexpress.

Hope this helps someone.

Few questions as well:
-is "fake screen" hdmi cable a must for headless rigs? dual miner worked ok with 4 cards and no screen, but past that it can't see temps and control mining intensity unless there's a screen attached.
-fans? I got a precut frame with slots for about 9 default PC sized fans, 5 top GPU row 4 bottom. Should I fit those or get a huge floor fan behind the rig and be done with it? I've been reading some but so far all I took away was that ball bearing fans should last longer than sleeve/lubricated ones. Any suggestions would be welcome.

edit: can run custom VBIOS after all, got too scared of the beeps initially. had to redo the driver signing with atikmdag-patcher-bios.exe

Oh God, I worked on this for around 10 hours non-stop yesterday and it drove me nuts. I had the latest bios, 16.9.2 drivers, Gen 1, 4G enabled, Windows 10 UEFI etc... I connected each card individually and they were all working fine. Woke up for more of the same today and to make a long story short I had forgotten to turn off fast boost! Lol, all six cards running fine now.

Z170a Carbon
G3900
3x Sapphire 470
3x Msi 470

Bty, If for some reason people don't trust OP's link the same BIOs is available on the MSI site.

It takes a lot to build but not much to lose

Do you have intel chipset or AMD for
MSI Z170A GAMING PRO CARBON .. both are available. Can you please write down your full hardware configuration? I would deeply appreciate that. Cheers

Guys,

just download the bios.

Only setting you need to turn on is Cryptocurrecy mining to enable.

BE SURE you have WINDOWS 10 in UEFI mode instaled.

I have instaled 30+ rigs all with 7 cards and it just works fine. All mobo there are MSI Z170A GAMING PRO CARBON 7GPU.

All cards i have in rigs are MSI RX 480 Gaming 8 GB.

It will work even with other cards as well. No need to adjust any other bios setings. Only think you need is to enable cryptocurrency mining.

Thats it.

If anything write me on skype... cReepas.

Best regards

So I got my rig to work. FINALLY!!!  Cheesy

(Using the modded Motherboard Bios.)
What I did to get it working.
1.) I plugged my ssd into another pc and went into Disk management.
2.) Deleted all volumes
3.) Coverted the entire disk to GPT
4.) Used Rufus and flashed Windows 10 ISO onto a USB drive with Partition Scheme set as GPT
5.) On the rig BIOS change PEG0 and PEG1 to auto and disable Above 4G decoding.
6.) On the boot menu ONLY allow UEFI
7.) Booted the USB
8.) Installed windows and AMD driver 16.11.1
9.) Went into BIOS and changed Integrated graphics to PEG
10.) Changed PEG0 and PEG1 to GEN1 and enabled Above 4G decoding.
11.) Save and restart.
12.)SUCCESS!!!

I currently don't know which driver to use though since 16.11.1 keeps crashing when I have 5 GPUs installed, any suggestions?

Depends on which GPU you have. I have RX 580s and I have 17.5.1 running just fine. Just have to use the driver patcher, atikmdag.

I have (6) RX 580's. I can only get drivers installed on 3 of them. The other 3 won't take to drivers. Can you explain the "driver patch"? Will this help with my problem?

Could someone confirm they made 6+ GPU work with a Kaby Lake CPU? I'll have the time to try myself in a week or two, would be nice to see more information on this. Hope I don't have to downgrade the CPU... Sad splurged on it.

Edit: v1.6+ BIOS supports Kaby Lake, is the custom BIOS based on that?

I'm running 7x with g3900 cpu

running 7x pulse 570 4gb on a g3900 celeron cpu

I'm having a hell of a time with black screens and windows not booting properly on both of my rigs. First rig was running great for a week and then when I returned from vacation it was stuck on black screen and failed to boot on restart. Had to remove all cards but one and redo drivers and finally got it to work for about 5 hours before doing the same thing. I'm running custom crypto bios with MSI z170a gaming pro carbon and 6 rx 480's. I have windows 10 installed via UEFI. I only enabled the crypto settings in bios and nothing else. Driver is 16.9.2 on both rigs and both are randomly going to black screen and then won't boot properly afterwards.

I'm at my wits end if anyone has had hr same issue.

Same issue

services.msc AND DISABLE AND TURN OFF  WIN UPDATE SHIT !

sounds like windows update/automatic driver update from windows make sure those are disabled. Run DDU and go through that same old process as normal
