I would want to own more than a few BitCoins.

not hard for anyone to understand - maybe ok in the short term, (as medium of exchange), but totally plausible as a store of value. Spend your Bitcoins, but save in gold too.

... and if everyone horded, then I think Bitcoin would fail as it needs day to day transactions to actually be worth something!

Can you explain gold to me please?

My thoughts on Gold are it's:

A: A commodity - Jewelry, electronics, etc
B: An investment

So yeah, I think I wasn't that clear in my description, hording is good, but transacting is good too and the two should go hand in hand, much like gold. That's what I think anyway, I may well be wrong here. (won't be the first time!)

Yeah, I know. If only... Oh well. We can't predict the future, and I am enjoying my car. Plus my license plate is helping advertise, so I'd like to think that at least a tiny part of the recent price spike was thanks to me  Grin

I'm pretty sure TONS of BTC are being hoarded now. I think the same things going to happen with BTC that happened with silver awhile back.

Exactly this. I cashed out my small stash a few months ago as I needed to get some new tyres (tires for you chaps over the pond) for my Prius (yes, I have one too!) and as the price was at a then all time high of 20 GBP I sold. I made a nice profit on my investments as well as my mining income and also purchased the said tyres for the car. So all in all, I'm still better off than I was when I entered the Bitcoin economy around six months ago.

Had I'd held off then I'd be a lot richer, but as said, we cannot predict the future and if everyone horded, then I think Bitcoin would fail as it needs day to day transactions to actually be worth something! So I don't feel bad at all, in a small way we're helping the Bitcoin economy by getting goods for our coins.

If you could have just held out for 2 more months, you would have been rolling in a rolls royce.

Shame you didn't believe in bitcoin.

So is this now the worlds most expensive prius? you were so proud of yourself for selling out at $22, shame you aren't a true believer.

Yep! I now drive a $109,000 Prius! $uck it, Porsche driving losers!  Grin

that porsche cayman is only BTC 534 currently: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/sold-300-bitcoins-2007-porsche-cayman-s-8200-miles-143722

it'll use a lot more fuel, though. In the long run, the prius will be cheaper (depending on driving style)

How do you know when it's the right time to sell?

For all you know, it will keep going up long after you're gone, so I say, if you have a solid plan, sell when you decide to, and don't look back, bitcoin WILL be higher than whatever you sold it at, it's only a matter of time, no use kicking yourself, just enjoy whatever it is you did with the fiat  Cool

Where was credit expansion back in June of 2011? Or am I just using incorrect terminology, and that was a hype-based monetization too?
I would say so. What happened after June 2011 was demonetization - or hyperinflation (collapse of the purchasing power). It looks very similar but the underlying mechanisms are different. You'll see what I mean when the USD collapses. Using your words you would say the USD is in a bubble.

Bottom line is, the Bitcoin price is unpredictable.  People can make reasonable assumptions about where it is headed, but unexpected news tomorrow could greatly change the price either direction.
