The hero we deserve would share with us what bios tweaks are necessary to make 8 cards work on Z270 boards, the ones most people can buy.  Anyone?

I have done lots of studies on 6-7-8 card rigs.

if they are not riser free and none are like that unless you have empty panda miner boards fill with galax katana 1070's

the drawbacks are real. Risers die faster then slots

Of the first 50 6 card rigs I built back last September I have had 2 motherboard and 6 video cards fail. The real interesting part is these rigs all ran only passive risers yet are still chugging away just fine.

I strongly feel it is about the setup and quality of parts used, not the quantity.

OK, just clicked 2 random links.. All I see is a bunch of noobs who are jumping headfirst into mining and have no clue what they're doing or how hardware works.

most are new. people  but not all.

and savings do not come into effect unless you have  30 cards or 5 rigs.

The three and four card rigs I build do not kill the mobos

Of 13 biostar mobos 1 died and was rma took  91 days .  But all boards are good.

the psu's for my current builds are 5 year warranty rosewill quark platinum 850 watts on sale at 85 bucks.

I can do 3 nvidia's on a board and hash at 1700 sols at 525 watts
a six card  rx 480  does 1800 sols 900 watts maybe 800 watts with good flashing

cost  3 nvidia gpu's on sales 1600

6 msi rx  8gb gamer rx 480  gpus on sales  1400

Tied for this is my pet peeve of not using a proper sized or high quality PSU.

We have 3 Biostar TB85s running with 6 GPUs each and they have been very stable. We're looking forward to trying some of the new TB350s later this month. We have a MSI Z170 Gaming M5 running with 7 GPUs that's been not quite stable, I am fairly sure it's a faulty PSU, but won't be able to test that theory out for sure until the replacement arrives tomorrow. Overall though, unless a mobo is designed for mining getting 5,6,7+ GPUs running stable is not a guarantee and I don't think we'll be messing with any non mining specific mobos in the future.

OP gives me anxiety. 20ish links? Really?

I've built tons of 7 GPU rigs since 2012 using Z77/87/97.

All you need is a troubleshooting oriented brain and a bit of patience. These days, it's easier than ever.

Bitcoin Talks Bullshit Walks
Phil.

I just finally successfully got a 7 card rig to mine.  7 390x on gaming 5 msi board.  What i ended up doing was removing the battery(resetting the bios) as i think something gets fubarred when it boots.  Saves the card layout or whathaveyou in bios.  IDK..  I set the gen to 1 on the pci slots the slot config to auto and the timing to 96 clock cycles.  Running smos i finally got it to boot past black screen.

Now the biostar tb85's i have.  For whatever reason i have serious stability problems with 6 cards. smos or windows.  Think some boards just perform better than others.  WHy that is is a bit troubling to say the least.  Hope you get it sorted out.

I would also say the recent surge in profitability of mining has more inexperienced miners building their first rigs with these more finnicky boards.

You just described me lol

I'm building 2 and 3 card rigs in regular gaming cases because I'm brand stinking new, and it's the easiest, and lastly, risers are sold out everywhere and I'm waiting on them to restock Smiley

Don't worry, my first "Mother board not detecting all my cards" thread is en route. Stand by

I feel like the up-trend in people not getting 6+ card rigs to work is just due to the inaccessibility of motherboards.

A year or even 6 months ago it was much easier to get asrock or biostar 6 pcie slot boards, which any noob can get 6 cards running on.

The z170/z270 boards are much more widely available but require some tweaking to get 5+ cards working stable.

So it is more a motherboard/noob problem, than a problem inherent in working with 5+ GPUs.

I know that there are successful builds of six cards or more

but I checked  17 days worth of threads  about  200  threads and 24 of them are I can't get my big ass 6 or more rig to work.

That means 12 percent of the entire sections can not build a six card rig correctly.

For those that can build one that is stable . Take that tiny edge you have and enjoy it.

For those that can't  or more so  for those that have yet to build one consider how many fail at it.  And do 2 or 3 four card builds.

I have also seen trends. most +5 systems that give issues have to weak PSU. pepole think that if the average consumption per card is 90W or 150W then that is all they have to cover. So you see 1000W with +6 cards that crash randomly. change that PSU to a 1200W Gold or better PSU and things runs fine forever. I have a 8 GPU XFX RX480 8GB rig on a Z270 with PCI-Switch. It can kill a dual 1200W PSUs if I run dual mining or run something like Skeincoin. But it does not happen at once. Good PSU can handle over current for some time. After such a crash it sometimes takes time to get all the GPU's running again

Asus Prime Z270P -  Less than 30 minutes of work had this board working with 6x RX580 as well as 6x 1070s using PimP, Simplemining, and EthOS.
I can confirm this. While I've only done five rigs with 6x RX 570's and now waiting for re-stock of AMD cards, and also waiting for 36x GTX 1080 Ti that will arrive next week, it's extremely easy to set up (as long as you know what to do at least) with no issues whatsoever in SimpleMining OS.

I am going to have to disagree that 6 card rigs are unstable and hard to setup. I have access to a very large number of machines running 6 cards with no issues. Just because amateurs cant figure out how to make it work does not mean it is not viable.

I will agree that once you pass 6 cards as most motherboards only have 6 physical PCI-E connectors you will have problems. Adding PCI-E splitters and things just complicates things and adds a whole new layer of issues to troubleshoot.

For example. In the past week i have tested 4 motherboards.

MSI B250 Gaming M3 - would not work with more than 3 cards without issues. Even adding a 4th created a slowdown on the other cards.

Asrock B250 Gaming K4 Fatal1ty - 45 minutes of BIOS tweaking and testing had this board working with 6x RX580s.

ASUS Prime Z270A - Less than 30 minutes of work had this board working with 6x RX580 as well as 6x 1070s using PimP, Simplemining, and EthOS.

Phil, I didn't have time to read your long ass post, it had way too many link, seriouly... wtf are you think is?

Can I get a TLDR or TDLR or TDLRR or whatever you kids are calling that short'nd vrsn pls.

Oh while I have you, I'm going to go off topic with something you might be able to help me with.

I just got my risers in, I'm going with molex and going to use all 3 molex on 1 cable to power all 6 risers with molex splitters - the problem is I can't get my msi z170 mobo to read all my GPU's

It is I can not get my 6 or 7 or 8  card rig to work.

Simple answer  the z270  gigabtye boards  do 4 and 5 with ease.

I will post a list of 6,7,8 card rig fails short ly.
