Great idea. Kudos to =makoto1337 and Rockethead. I have a question though how long will the silver and and gold crowd sale last ? I would buy some silver coins so I don't want to miss the deadline. One idea is to number the coins and run them as a limited edition so make them more attractive to collectors.
Yes. it's nice the the NEM community supports closed source companies.
I have few prejudices against closed source businesses as long as useful products are made. Coinbase, Bitpay, Bitfinex etc. have been extremely helpful to Bitcoin for example. Nevertheless, the business model has to be clear and private company should have its own private funding. I only speak for myself not for NEM community.
That is why we are doing the coin sale, so we don't have to use ecosystem funds.
To be honest, though, UP's original intention seems to have been to use some of the 200 stakes for ecosystem dev to create for-profit projects, as he proposed several himself, including an exchange. So it seems like we are going through lots of extra work for nothing, when we could just ask for free money.
However, I am one of the people involved and I thought that a crowd sale would be better than relying only on ecosystem funds. If the sale goes well, we won't have to go begging for money from other sources.
All this information about the legal entity AltNemo should have been made public as well as the true intention of the coin sale.
Okay, so what did you think was "the true intention" of the coinsale ?
Nothing was said that funds raised were to be used for closed source proprietary software
That's doesn't answer my question.
And I'm not saying everything AltNemo does will be open source but can you point me to the part where anyone said that it will be closed source ?
On the altnemo site two projects are listed: mobile wallet and fast exchange.
1. Will the mobile wallet be open source?
2. Will the Fast Exchange be open source?
1. We haven't decided yet. The first version of the mobile app will be a simple wallet. Future versions will be more complex and have advanced features, so we won't open source that I think. BUT we will provide open API access to our services.
2. No, but the exchange will just be doing order matching. Orders are currently envisioned as coming in from the NEM AE, which will be open source. There is a chance that AltNemo will write open source code for the NEM AE to help get it out faster. Again, open API access will be available.
AltNemo is just one of hopefully many entities that will exist in the NEM ecosystem. The NEM system will always be free, decentralized, and open source. The NEM ecosystem will be unregulated, so closed source companies are free to come and use NEM. The principle of equality of opportunity should apply to those who want to create companies in the NEM ecosystem. That is, there should be no monopolies that push out everyone else. Thus even now, if anyone wants to do something in the NEM ecosystem, I would fully support them to do it (so long as they are trustworthy and not a scam).
