You need to understand what she wants. Gambling can make you enjoy the game, but gambling can also make you addictive, and I think you already know. You've got the lesson for not gamble when you are with your girl because I think she can feel something that is not right with you. But don't promise anything if you cannot do that because that will let her down. You can use your time with your girl because that is the best time for both of you.

It's just fine being suddenly wake up late but just to think to gamble, I can't understand what's going on to OP. Usually, a person will find a way to get back on sleep such as watching a movie or play games. But to gamble, there's really something wrong.

Maybe it's time now for OP to put everything on the box and try to avoid any gambling-related thing.

^ Hypertension probably manifests the same as what happened to you, it is possible for you to experience that because in the middle of the night when you are supposed to be resting you were still up and play gambling where stress and mix emotions could trigger that to happen. You are fortunate because your girlfriend was with you during that time and she was able to stop your gambling and made you back to sleep for if you are alone and no one would stop you worse scenario may occur afterward. I think this is a sensitive matter and should not be ignored. OP should not play gamble if her kid is around.
Also he should take her to doctor to check if she is medically fit. Also if he promised he would not gamble again, he should remain firm to it.

When he said his girl, doesn't mean that it is his kid or what, I think what he meant by that is that this is his girl, the love of his life. There is no such kid who can easily feel that the sense of the body of a man suddenly changed.

Probably you are gambling in the right manner. For example, whenever I do go for betting on soccer, I never get any excitement compared to how I do gamble dicing. Yeah, he must seek some help otherwise it would be difficult to get out of it specially when he's all alone, and worse it could cost it a precious life. But anyway, I kinda think that nightmare he had was really frightening one that lessons and fear shot his head really hard that bullet of fear would hunt him everytime he wake up in the middle of the night even though having no inentions to gamble. Down side of this thing is that, it can't be a metric to measure confidence to stay away with gambling, never at the very least. It must be look at by someone who can take care things with this life-threatening norm. And he himself must practice not picking up his phone whenever he suddenly wake up, best bet is to lock it up and get it the next morning, lol.

Better to reassess than waking up that you are already addicted, things are very possible if you forget to assess and observe everything. Luck is not always going to be beside you and most of the time suffering from gambling addictions is next in line. It had happened to me as well. I had experienced such heart pumping thrills while gambling and while trading stocks. When you are too excited or got too much of panic then you may see how frequently your heart starts beating. Basically, it is not good for health of our heart as it may lead sudden cardiac arrest and other heart related problems. If we think about the outcome of gambling is worth than our life then probably we may not gamble forever.

At the same time, the essence of entertainment of gambling is, experiencing its thrills and suspense. But, it should be within a limit. This limit definitely vary person to person. Moreover, our heart is becoming weak over experiencing such thrills along getting old. So, avoiding gambling may save our life.
