I think a quiz would be great idea, but how about disclosure/disclaimers?

1.  I have looked up and understand the Bitcoin Venn Diagram.

2.  I know how much a kilowatt hour of electricity costs me.

3.  I agree not to try to calculate how many cents per hour I can make mining altcoins.

I'm just sort of sitting around here trying to get the restrictions lifted so that I can offer my proof-reading service to the Peerbet thread. Although I've already seen a bunch of interesting posts where I've been ready to say a thing or two, before realizing that I couldn't  Sad

I find the arbitrary restrictions set on "newbies" to be mildly insulting.  I also find them to be a deterrent to participation.
really? well maybe it's to deter people from creating scam accounts, you know? makes it more time-consuming. could always get whitelisted.

I feel these restrictions help limit, as mentioned above, spam accounts who post in the marketplace and other parts of the forum such as the group buys section.

i don't think the newbie restrictions are a bad thing.
Sure, it is annoying but if it ups the quality of the main forums it is surely worthwhile - unless of course there is some desperate need to post in the main forums ....

i have lurked here for a good while before even bothering to register an account.  At least this thread is here so i can rattle off a few meaningless sentences so that i can satisfy whatever bot manages the newbie posting privileges ...

@benwahbe

How do you keep that thing cool. It looks incredibly restrictive.

@Everybody Else

The restrictions are due to a spam attack. Not sure if the requirements in place are the best or not but, it is what it is.

I think the restrictions is not insulting but necessary.

The restrictions seem incredibly arbitrary.

Howdy!  I have been lurking here since December 2012 and have learned a ton from everyone on here.  This is a great community!

I am currently mining LTC with my small GPU collection.  I hope to increase its size soon Smiley

How is it insulting?

Maybe a quiz would be better

A Quiz on BitCoins, let's see:

Question 1:

Who made BitCoins?

1) Satoshi
2) Gorrilaz
3)I dunno
4)So painfully obvious.

Having a quiz is bad news. All of the questions would be easy to answer.

The Answer is 1, 4, and other="My miners make the bitcoins out of wasting brain cycles of my components, well kinda, they alone don't make them, but whatever"

Agree with the quiz idea.  A lot of people have been into bitcoin for a long time, but just lurk instead of registering here.  Having to stay in newbie jail and contrive posts to get out is just plain obnoxious.

Agreed. I first heard about Bitcoin in 2009 (but did nothing  Sad) and got more heavily involved in February this year, so to be confined to the "newbie" area is kind of disappointing (although compared to others who have been active since 2009, I am a newbie).

The newbie jail shows who should sit in actual jail and who deserves to be here.

A quiz sounds like fun. But the questions should be more technical than historical.

I'm not trying to be obnoxious.  I just want to to generate some open dialog.  That's what makes a community great.

Open dialog is fine, but in all fairness, I doubt anyone is even looking at posts in the newbie section, unless they're a newbie themselves. I'm pretty sure I won't return to this corner of the community once I've served my time here.
