I have a few more follow up questions, that I've been asking in private messages, but perhaps there are other newcomers here that would benefit from this discussion, so I am moving those questions to here.

  • I believe I am going to be using simple mining OS to GPU mine ETH.  Is that the OS instead of using windows to drive the rig?
  • Is simple mining also the mining pool, or do I still need to get an account with a mining pool or two (I've read about having a backup pool)
  • I've read that simple mining pays out every couple of weeks in BTC.  So it sounds like the convert the mined ETH to BTC and pay it that way, is this correct?  Would there be advantages or disadvantages to take the payment actually in ETH?  I guess I figured if I was mining ETH I was earning ETH... but if it's better to get paid in BTC, please elaborate?
  • What is the URL I need to go to to get setup with a pool, etc? For Simple mining?

Thanks!

Ok, thanks, i updated the settings little bit and now i have been running rig 12hrs without crashes. (5600XT crashed). Now it shows 83w for 5600xt and 109w for 5700xt,
i have to check the real value from the wall, not sure how close that 832w is now. ***(Checked 690W from wall)

Which miner are you using? I tried first TRM and then changed to PM

https://ibb.co/z5CK6tV

"
It's good, now your rig is stable for at least 24h?"
I'm using Phoenix Miner, latest version, in my rig works better than another miners, more stable, and I suspect it's something related to power, because another miners consume 10w less than Phoenix, but it's stable

Its stable, only that RX570 is doing loads of invalid shares. (XFX RX 570 RS 8GB XXX).
Straps are Pimped straps from SRBPolaris V3.5.

Ps. tested Lolminer on old RX470 4G cards, working nicely on HiveOs, still pushing over 29Mh/s.

I tried cleaning up the quotes not sure if I did it correctly. as the bold type was rdluffy

29mh is 29 x 3.27 or 94 cents a day at viabtc. not bad for an old card

eth hash rate dropped a bit to 283th  as of dec 12

I have 3x 3080's
today my 1 3060ti comes in
It is all I have in the 3000 series.

Thanks, I thought you already have some 3070s  Cheesy
In this thread: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/3060-ti-vs-3070-gigabyte-oc-hashrateswatt-comparison-5299500 there is a comparisson between 3060ti and 3070 and it looks almost the same, and I found some 3070s on stock easy and only 10% more expensive
I'm thinking on resale value, it's way better on 3070 instead of 3060ti

i believe you will see the decrease in about 10 dags after the 4gb limit is actually hit.  Maybe sooner depending on os etc.  LOL posted a chart showing when it slowed and i want to say by like 7 dags its was down considerably.  Ill try to locate it.  Useful info....my 4gb are still going on linux.

Yes this is the post he is referring too. Basically for some reason my rigs stopped on Epoch #381, while for others it should work until #382, strange. It seems that the speeds are "ok" until Epoch #385 which hashes at 82% from full speed, which is around year end. Epoch #390 and on are just not worth it at hashing 50% speed. So I would say you can use it for 3 more weeks and then think about getting 8GB gpus because its going to be highly unprofitable by then.

There is the chart.  Looks like 50% is end of dec for windows and late jan 2021 for linux.
You can mine longer but the penalty gets crazy.  Better to mine something else and exchange for eth (or whatever you want).

Finally got my 4GB back in action again mining ETH. I assumed it would be troublesome and not worth the hassle but that lolminer program really works even with DAG >4GB. The speed I got before was like 29MH/s and now its 28.5MH/s. Power usage is slightly less probably due to the slower hashing speed.

Program seems stable and hasn't crashed yet. Pretty easy to set up, nothing to configure really just use the provided *.sh files and put in your own pool and address. Only thing is certain feature like ttli, or remote monitoring either aren't available or I can't get them to work.

Only issue is that this program will be good maybe for another month or 2 and then the speed will just be way too slow. I think by March or April it will hash at like 50% of the normal speed. But till then might as well use it. Hope the overall hashrate lowers even more with 4GB cards shutting down and E3 going offline.

3060ti is in.

an aorus 3060ti beautiful card.  One of the few times I felt guilty not gaming with a card.

Toying with it to see if I can get a stable 62mh

I can get a stable 61mh. which seems to be the better choice to shoot for with this card.

It was impossible to run that 5700 stock, mem temp was something like 106C and that wattage was over 200. System should be good as i only changed GPUs to newer.
I try to drive them now with these settings, maybe tomorrow i try to lift that memory little bit.

I understand, so try to leave memory at stock, there are some GPUs I had that didn't reach 900 (1800mhz) stable, and another boards need more than 800mv on memories

I have the same Asus 5600Xt and looking at your picture, you core clock is 1100mhz, mine is 1300, and my power consumption is 90w for 5600xt and 115w for 5700xt, maybe you need to get more power on these two boards to become stable

Hey philipma, or anyone using 3070s

What's the real hashrate and power consumption of 3070?
I'm seeing some videos and comments but some people only tested for some minutes
(people on Youtube only test for some minutes, and didn't show power at the wall, so I'm a little confused here)

Anyone using for a couple of days?
I know it's probably not the same hashrate per watt as 3060ti but I think it will have a better resale value in some months

Well woke up today and my 4GB old rig was down. Decided to reboot it, and it fails when loading the DAG. Apparently #381 is the last dag that works for 4GB under Linux/Ubuntu. So I guess this was the end of the road for the 4GB cards. Bought them in Summer 2016 so they lasted many many years. Only issue I had was dead fans.

I've been watching people talking about this coming death for 4GB cards, but I'm curious - this is because of the DAG file specific to Ethereum, correct?  Are there other coins then you could point the rig at and keep making *something* with it?  Or does it just become obsolete and it's time to part it out on ebay or something?

dont buy 4gb cards. 6gb should be good for next 18 months.

I am going to clifton farm on sunday. I will be bringing the 3 card 1660ti rig home.

even these are selling at a premium on ebay. cards I purchased for under 300 mined for a year are selling for 300 to 339 on ebay.

very soon a glut of 4gb cards will hit ebay.

avoid them. when I bring the 1660ti rig home I will post some photos of it here.

I could very likely sell that rig for 1000 usd maybe a little more on ebay

I usually sell gear here at a discount based on ebay prices.

If that rig could get 1000 on ebay. and if the buyer did not fuck me. I could clear 850 fees and shipping would make it be 150.

If I sold it for 900 here and paid 50 to ship it. I would clear the same 850. but I would ask less then 900.

and less then 850
and less then 800 which would be a bargain at current rates.  since cards alone on ebay cost more then 1000.

and they are sold out everywhere.

So, which cards would you buy right now? I am planning to replace 5 rigs of 8xPolaris cards and will probably downsize in total rig count.

Am thinking to aim for two rigs of RTX 3080s - trying to aim for the same/similar hash-rate.
Now my question is: Which RTX 3080s are best in price/performance? I have a Microcenter around the corner, so hopefully can get lucky one of those days and grad a few to start with, but would love to see, which cards I should avoid.

we have a few of us with them on hand I own 3 of these

EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 XC3 ULTRA GAMING, 10G-P5-3885-KR, 10GB GDDR6X, iCX3 Cooling, ARGB LED, Metal Backplate

https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=10G-P5-3885-KR

Oem price is 769.99 it is a very good card.

Can I get 100Mhs stable with that one?

I get 95 at 220watts. for last few weeks very steady. I use simple miner.

Yes, it's because the DAG size of ETH in specific, another coins and algos have another DAG size
Look what ETC did, they reduced dag to fit and get 4Gb cards mining again and it's a win win situation (more hashrate, more security against 51% atacks)

There are another options to mine with 4gb cards too, but nothing as profitable as ETH  Cheesy
So the dead of 4gbs are only for ETH at the moment, unless some dev find a "magic" solution

Maybe or maybe not I will try that lolminer however I don't think its worth the hassle anymore. Unless the hashrate is reduced alot and the slower speed is caught up with the lower difficulty. Will keep checking https://etherscan.io/chart/hashrate and see how the next couple of days will go.

If you check a pool hashrate, https://ethermine.org/statistics  it looks like there was a dip but it quickly went up again, only loss was 1TH/s of hashrate.
