What we really need to do is get nodes running on tiny powerful always connected to the Internet devices that everyone carries around all day......phones.
Most smartphone users like their battery to last more than 2-3 hours.  Cheesy

Skynet is referenced that way a lot.

Shouldn't be to hard on Android devices since they run Java anyway.

If they launch a big (bigger/huge) DDOS attack, do we stand a chance?
And let me extend this question with another.  What is the relative worth of a Raspberry Pi compared to a cloud-based virtual private server (VPS)?  Are X number of Raspberries worth Y number of VPS, or do they put their fingers in different parts of the leaking dyke?
lots of rPi are better than few VPS  Wink

Well possibly. Should we all dump the VPS for rPi? No, we don't really have a clear indication of how they'll hold up to anything yet, there are maybe what, a few dozen deployed considering the last post I read about the package being downloaded. We should add as many of everything as possible up until and beyond the Jan 3rd source code release/launch.

One great thing about the rPi is there are places that can co-locate them for free or very cheap. We should be configuring them and sending them out into the world Smiley

Ricky, i think they do the same thing on a good day and spread the nodes but a remote server (probably) has a much faster network connection, and you can only pay when you need it.

I've got some donation money that I am saving to spend when the next (ha) ddos comes around. Probably set up a handful on jan 2nd and be ready for the spike of traffic, good or bad.

Everything helps, especially hallmarked nodes. I don't know if there is a way to answer the X number vs. Y number question.

yeah, we double down on VPS, everyone needs to get ready to spend literally $2USD.

we can go to digital ocean for example where they bill by the hour.

get a simple step by step walkthrough posted and everyone who is online and who is smart enough to know where to find this forum will be able to start their own vps

Does anyone else think this might have been a friendly DDoS?

It caused Cfb to tighten up the software and it caused us to strengthen the network with an explosion of new nodes and many more in the works.  If someone really wanted to embarrass Nxt, they could have waited until we were out of alpha stage and they could have hit us with a much stronger attack.  If it's malicious, why bring it on early and easy?  It has done us no harm and quite a bit of good.

I'm not one for conspiracy theories. But I thought the same thing the other day. See who's really in this and for what goal

You can only saturate the network up to 100%, anything past that, their DDOS power is being wasted. Also, I think they got spooked by how fast NXT was rising, and wanted to suppress it before people started looking into it. Don't forget, once the source code is released, they may find a way to launch an even more powerful attack, so this was at most a recon mission for the attackers.

In any case (malicious or not), the DDOS showed us how strong the NXT community is. A few months from now, no one will remember the rollercoaster price right now (something I'm sure all new coins experience), they'll remember that there's a community willing to give up their personal time and money to see NXT succeed!
