Once we figure out how to get 10 second block times

10 second block times would be great.

Have you read this?

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.5051186
"Time of a next block is determined by the time of the previous block and by the base target. The base target is a part of Bitcoin legacy that should be left behind, it doesn't make sense to wait when next block is mined coz we already know who will do it. And we can mine blocks at a fixed rate, for example, every 60000 ms (exactly 1 min). When Internet becomes faster we will switch to a smaller gap between blocks (10 seconds, for example)."

Eliminate randomness, generate blocks at a fixed rate, do it faster.

I have been trying to communicate with more words what I believe BCNext has already said. Especially when I see that it isnt impossible, I will post ideas on how I think it could be done. I have the benefit of not being smart enough to know when it is impossible. So I keep pushing at it, until maybe it just becomes really difficult.

Auroracoin   The fourth of the market capitalization
http://www.auroracoin.org/ Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked
The Airdrop will start to take place on March 25th 2014 and will target as many Icelanders as possible. There are various means of authenticating Icelanders on the Internet, that will be utilized to execute the Airdrop. About 330,000 Icelanders will be made able to claim f 31.8 each over the following year from the initiation of the Airdrop.

The Airdrop will provide Icelanders with a great opportunity to get to know Auroracoin and use it in their daily lives. It will as well provide a way for them to reach outside the confines of the currency controls.

The Airdrop will be a gift to each and every recipient, for him or her to spend or save.

Further detail on the Airdrop will be posted once it is under way.

On version 0.8.3, I notice that ssl is disabled.  Is my secret phrase still secure?

Basically if you are using "localhost" then I think using "http" rather than "https" is fine (there is a much greater chance of a key-logger stealing your password).

If you are using your web server remotely then you will need to read up on creating a self-signed SSL certificate in order to use "https".

Is it safe to unlock account and forge on public node? Even that this node is my personal?

It's not recommended.

http://wiki.nxtcrypto.org/wiki/FAQ#Are_there_public_servers_I_can_use_for_forging.3F

Even when public node runs on ubuntu, which run on Android TV stick via VNC service?

Thanks guys!

This is really great stuff. The downvotes on reddit will pass as the generosity is what most people will remember. As a biomedical researcher and professor of medicine, I am pleased to be a part of the NXT community where these efforts exists. I am spreading the word at my academic institution at all opportunities.

A bit of criticism however is that this effort could be seen as merely a response to balance the PR woes we've seen since NXT's inception (reddit's angle)...I am not blind to the fact that there is a huge risk investing in NXT due to the massive imbalance of 50 milion+ NXT accounts and I do think that the whales would be wise in making decisions about further distribution and transparency.

I'm glad none-the-less to see what klee has done. Thank you sir.

The thing is: people are mad that they were skeptical in december and didn't buy in. It really is that simple.

Every donation can obviously be seen as a way of benefitting the donators unless it's 100% anonymous, but there is nothing wrong with that.
Klee obviously believe in both the tech he invested in and the tech that he used to get this money and send it with.

I think we would have to go to a two tiered forging model for this to have a chance. That is why I think nodecoin has a very good purpose as it will allow all of the non-hallmarked nodes to earn something for being part of the network, even if they wont ever be able to directly forge a block, they will earn nodecoins. Generous donators can then fund a NXT dividend to flow through the nodecoins. Maybe we run forging with a non-profit model. All excess transaction fees after paying for the cost of the hallmarked servers gets distributed to nodecoin owners.

From the end user standpoint, all nodes are in one giant pool, but in reality forging is done by the NXT hub servers, preferably at once per 10 seconds and 1000TPS

With respect: this is a glib, bullshit answer, and you can't prove the "most of us" part any more than you can prove the "BCNext did math analysis" part.

Three months in and we have no Whitepaper, no documentation of algorithms, and no modelling or statistical analysis.

The greatest irony of the great decentralized Nxt Ecosystem is that its core is centralized in an opaque, anonymous identity who only communicates to the world through a Belarusan Java programmer on contract.

One day soon, Nxt will be called out for this. It is Nxt's biggest flaw.

He found the fatal flaw and he is right.

Wrt "Three months in and we have no Whitepaper, no documentation of algorithms, and no modelling or statistical analysis"...

U have source code. It's enough to get the rest. Don't u think that one needs IQ > 200 to do the analysis?

The problem is communication, my friend. What's not in the source code is WHY things were built the way they were, or what BCNext's expectations are for the community, or a plan that isn't communicated in one-line forum posts once every 20 forum pages.

What's missing from BCNext is a commitment to communication and transparency towards the very community that have turned his 6000 lines of Java into actual potential.

There is no such thing as too much communication. BCNext is a fine example of the opposite.

I think (this "think" is speculative) that BCNext (and CfB) are very concerned about centralization, that of expertise and authority, in the minds of too few people whom others look up to too much.

Since I'm talking about proof and independent verification tonight, let me help start the discussion going:

Consider the algo BCNext chose for how TF selects the next block forger. It's described in the wiki. We know that BCNext wanted your probability of forging to be proportional to your effective stake, i.e. the amount of nxt in your account that's been there for at least 1440 blocks. So why did he choose that algo, instead of simply:

1) Strictly order all accounts with >0 effective stake
2) Roll a deterministic die from 0 to sum_of_all_effective_stakes
3) See which interval [ sum_of_all_previous_effective_stakes, sum_of_all_previous_effective_stakes + effective_stake_k ) it lands in, where effective_stake_k is the effective stake of account k.
4) If account k is online and forging, pick k as the next forger. If not, goto 2, rolling further along the sequence of deterministic rolls until you land on such an account.

This algo would be the most direct way to ensure such proportionality. So why did BCNext not choose this, and instead go for something that a priori would seem to have different behaviour?

I thought about this a couple weeks back, and I think I have some answers. Math/CS guys, think about the following:

1) Let's say you're not satisfied with just running sims. How would you prove that for each account k, p(chosen by BCNext's algo)/p(chosen by my algo) approaches 1 as the # of accounts with an effective stake approaches infinity? This statement isn't mathematically complete: what exactly would you mean by # of accounts approaches infty? Wouldn't more accounts mean smaller stakes and hence change the effective stake of each k as you increase the #? How would you modify this statement to something that you could prove or disprove?

2) Compare the performance of BCNext's algo with my algo under different conditions: different # of accounts with an effective stake, different # of such accounts that are online and forging. When would you choose one over the other?

I can reveal my own answers in a week if folks are interested, just ask Smiley But I'm guessing that BCNext (and CfB) want more people to think through all this, as well as other parts of the code.

I teach olympiad (competition) math for a living. Not just the "calculate answers" kind of math, but also the "reason through" and "prove" kind of math. I can't see how to teach this well by prescribing how-tos, going through working, or even proving theorems and formulas that my students may use. All that teaches "how" and "what", but not "why". The way I teach "why" is by getting students to explore, with some guidance. That means to get them to try different methods, and also to examine their own reasoning. Maybe they will find that their methods are wrong. Maybe they can fix their errors. Maybe they will discover other ways of solving the problems that I did not think of.

I'm guessing that this is what BCNext and CfB are trying to do.

CfB, is this the case? Was this part of your contract with BCNext?

EDIT: Woohoo, just in time for 2000!

Since I'm not going to achieve psychic mindlock today with CfB and BCNext to get the information dump we all need, I'm gonna change the subject.  (Squirrel!!! : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSUXXzN26zg )

There is a new coin on coinmarketcap.com just below NXT in market cap and that is Auroracoin.  If you don't know about Auroracoin, you should take a minute and read some about it.  It is a litecoin clone that is about to become an official government currency for Iceland.  Without going into gory details, the banking system in Iceland has had huge problems over the past few years and the government is desperate to engineer a reboot.  Thus Auroracoin.  It has a 50% pre-mine that is being held in trust and will be given out to the people of Iceland in 25 days.  They are encouraging activity to get tools in the hands of Icelanders to allow their easy use of this new currency.

http://www.auroracoin.org/

http://theconversation.com/free-cash-for-iceland-but-it-pays-to-keep-cool-about-auroracoin-23061

The 64,000 NXT question is - could NXT somehow get on this bandwagon and become part of the Auroracoin management system via AE?  If we can get EVERYBODY IN ICELAND (population 300,000) owning NXT as a part of helping to manage their new Auroracoins...

How could we help them? What is the next step? Should we contact the developers offering them our support?

James, how should we proceed?
I am already proceeding and have been for a while. These market developments are not a surprise to me.

I can add auroracoin to the automated gateway, so anybody with aurora coin just establishes their NXT acct <-> Aurora addresses. Then we essentially extend AE to include the aurora wallet. This is why I am working so hard on the automated gateway. It instantly leverages whatever we connect to it with AE powers. Also AE gets extended with whatever is added.

Once we support the dozens of worthy altcoins, AE will be directly tied to all those wallets. Just like coinbase is linked to a checking acct. Once inside AE, there are all the crypto exchange possibilities, but more importantly real world trading, like POPPP's farm.

That is why I am developing the NXTcoins development kit that allows people to "configure" their NXT asset with coin type of properties. It is one thing to issue a bunch of Unicorn asset, another to properly manage the inventory, especially if it is tied into events outside the NXT blockchain. The gateway links offchain activities directly into AE.

Once we figure out how to get 10 second block times and make sure the cellphone apps handle QR codes, people can transact for real world goods in iceland using their cellphones. Now Aurora coin is not actually the official currency of iceland, more of a people's movement, but once we have 10 second block times, NXT hubs we can seriously start recruiting entire small countries to issue their currency as an AE asset.

James

Ok, but should we approach them now?
Could we put together a letter that we can send them? I am not a native english speaker (nor writer Smiley ).
Approach whom? Is Aurora coin centralized?
It probably wouldnt hurt to start posting on threads of other coins to let them know about NXT's AE capabilities.

Could someone please help me rephrase the text of James? Then we can spread the news amond the other coins to let them know about the functionalities.
