Afghanistan have lost six wickets and managed to score only 125 runs in 30 overs. In that case though Afghanistan tried to make a good comeback by defeating England but still I would say Afghanistan team is much weaker than New Zealand team. And that is well understood in today's match. Afghanistan batsmen could not survive against the New Zealand bowlers.

However Afghanistan's required run rate is currently above 8 and their current run rate is only around 4. I don't think the lower order batsmen of the Afghanistan team will be able to cope with these powerful bowlers of New Zealand. Although I expected New Zealand to score 300 today. Anyway Today New Zealand's will be the winner it confirm as my perspective.

Batting at a target of 289 on this pitch, it was much more difficult to win. The pitch was not batting friendly. As we have seen in New Zealand's innings, the batsmen have had a lot of trouble scoring runs. New Zealand's top order collapsed quite quickly. Still New Zealand managed to provide a very good target. Had the target been less than 250 I would have thought an Afghanistan win was a possibility. But considering the pitch, a target of 289 runs is enough to win if the batsmen can bowl under control. Although Afghanistan lost their first wicket for thirty runs in New Zealand's innings, they were 4 for 110 after 20 overs. Relying on New Zealand's Glenn Phillips 71 and Latham 68, New Zealand ended up amassing 288, which turned out to be a challenging score for Afghanistan. Afghanistan didn't get off to a good start as three of Afghanistan's top order batsmen got out with few runs which could have affected Afghanistan's victory in today's match. In the current state of the game, it can be safely said that Afghanistan may not win today's match.

People who watch cricket normally say that "if you miss a catch, you miss the match" then I mean if Afghanistan missed five catches then what should they miss? Teams that play good cricket give more importance to fielding. You have good bowlers in your team, you have good batsmen in your team, but if you don't have good fielders in your team, then good bowlers or good batsmen will not work. In a match if you take one catch after another and don't stop the fielding runs then no matter how well the bowler bowls he will not get frustrated and he will not be able to bowl well even if he wants to and also because of extra catches and extra runs. Due to giving away the total collection will be very big as a result of which the batsmen will have nothing to do in that match.

New Zealand team could not collect runs against Afghanistan. The New Zealand team lost power play wickets and could not stay on the field for a long time. If the Afghanistan team can defend the wicket, then surely the chances of victory against New Zealand are very high. Because Afghanistan's batsmen are very strong. It was the fall of wickets at the start of Afghanistan which put a lot of pressure on the Afghanistan team. If the New Zealand team can play a good role in bowling then there is definitely a chance to win today.

After what I saw today I can say one thing to you that is Afghanistan won't win today. New Zealand was once 29/3 but then came in the partnership of 144 runs by Latham and Philips which helped them to give a target of 289 runs to Afghanistan.

New Zealand was always one of the favorite teams before coming to the World Cup. They and India are the only teams as of now who have not lost any game in this tournament. My understanding is that Afghanistan might be able to face the bowling attack of the New Zealand team. They (New Zealand) have only one spinner in their team but the conditions in Chennai are much more suitable for batting in the second innings.

After the first innings, New Zealand managed to score 288 runs against Afghanistan. A target of 289 runs is not at all a safe target for New Zealand on a wicket like the one played on.

On the kind of wicket played, 300 runs will certainly be a fighting game but since the opponent is Afghanistan, 289 runs is quite a challenging score for the Afghanistan batsmen. Afghanistan team has quality bowlers but lack of quality batsmen due to which they lost most of the matches due to failure of batsmen even though they bowled well. Afghanistan started well against England Afghanistan must start well in the second innings against New Zealand. If they can score 60 to 70 runs without a wicket in the first 10 overs of the power play, Afghanistan will be far ahead in terms of winning this match. Another weakness of Afghanistan if I mention is that if they have a wicket fall then they lose wickets regularly which is a big problem for them.

For Ind vs Aus, they used a center pitch, which offered a decent spin for the Indians. For NZ vs BAN they used different deck (square) and there was virtually no spin to offer and it benefited the Kiwis. So as usual, lot will depend on the pitch.

Oh.. OK.. I overlooked this factor. There is no doubt that playing against Mujeeb and Rashid is going to be challenging. But at the same time, for the first two matches these bowlers got a lot of punishment. And New Zealand top order is in excellent form. So unless the pitch offers exceptional support for the spinners, I am not sure whether Afghanistan will get an advantage. One disadvantage with Afghanistan is that their spinners are quite sought after in franchise T20 leagues. They play all around the world and therefore their variations and tactics are known to everyone.

The presenter mentioned in the pitch report that it's the same pitch as NZ vs BAN so there won't be big assistance for the spinners.

Should be easy for Kiwis as it will lessen the impact of Afghan's spin trio and in 20 overs gameplay it does look like smooth sailing. Poor fielding did play some part, so far they dropped 2 regulation catches.
