To clear up a lot of discussion here about PCIe connectors and splitters etc. Regardless of what the PCIe standards indicate a power cable and connector does not "provide wattage" - they merely transport current as used by your device. What matters is how hot the cable and assembly get for a certain amount of current flowing through them.

Molex rates their connectors according to a certain rise in temperature that they consider safe. The PCIe standards take this rating and downgrade it to be conservative given that many suppliers use lighter gauge wire that will heat up and melt more quickly.

If you use decent 18 ga. wire as rated by Molex, and their connectors, then it is reasonable to use the rated current per pin within a safety factor. As long as the PSU can supply the power, the cables don't somehow limit or prevent power from being used. They simply heat up when too much power is drawn, and consume a small amount depending on their resistance.

So the standard 45558-0003 PCIe connector is rated at 8A per contact, and 3 contacts are being used for 12V to the board, putting a connector based limit of 24A, or 288W. Limits placed lower than that are based on wire gauge and more conservative safety factors but do not mean a cable cannot handle the current. They simply heat up more than if they carry less current. Splitters are fine if they use adequate gauge wire for each leg of the split. Stay away from light gauge wires no matter what the standard dictate - light gauge = higher resistance = more power loss to heat in the cables.

18ga. is what the Molex connectors are rated for but they can be used with as thin as 24ga. according to their docs. It's possible to buy pins that go 22 -26 ga. And some Chinese cable assemblies probably use cheap copy connectors. Choose accordingly.

Another maybe silly question here... when using the Ic2 cables to daisy chain the k16 boards, and with that, only one usb cable with the first board in chain, will only one miner be needed to control all the boards that are daisy chained?? (I'm thinking that's correct) and if so, how would one know if a board should fail in the that daisy chain, and would it stop the boards from working beyond that failed board...ok lots here to ask or discuss

And" can k16 and k64's be daisy chained together in the same fashion?  Cheesy

Thx

Unfortunately TH is very sluggish in this - I tried to make a deal with btceic and another member with no success...
If KnC succeeds along with Bitfury and maybe AMC and/or labcoin, I don't think I will look again back at TH...
That's why customers need variety of choices - then totally unacceptable and unproffesional behaviors like these are harshly punished!

fyi all, I received my full refund today with no dispute by terrahash, (they never replied to the claim) and as previously stated will now stfu about it, which I am sure many of you will be happy about.

klee,
I appreciate you trying to work with terrahash on this issue with me.

I wish you all the best of luck.

Nice to hear you got it all worked out Btceic.

thanks kl999

I am extremely happy for this.

I also got my refund today via a Paypal claim - no response or help from TH

I will stick around though if only to annoy you and your whiney posts, you are the biggest whiner in here!

I'm interested in buying a preorder but strongly prefer that TH formally changes its ownership. (I'd give them $ for the trouble.) I haven't been able to contact them by phone or support ticket.

Has anyone had any luck changing ownership of a TH preorder? Similarly, do you know if it's possible to change a hosted preorder to a local pickup?

Thanks!

I think they had some talk about this and it wasn't possible due to some rights. I think hosted orders might be able to change hands easier though and you could probably sort something. What kind of machine were you going to buy/how much are you paying?

I was looking at either 90GH/s + case for $7K (local pickup), or the full 180 GH/s for $10.5K (hosted). I would be able to meet the person with the local pickup preorder, since I also live in the Bay Area. The person with the hosted preorder is from another country, but seems honest (famous last words).

Communicating with TH seems pretty difficult for pretty much anything. I've been trying to change my shipping address with them for two weeks now, and haven't even gotten a response. I hope they have some time to spend on customer support once the PCBs are being printed.

Well done, Terrahash!

Can you explain details of your Terrahash Hosting?
Where to submit bitcoin address?
Where and how to pay the first month of hosting?
etc.

Thanks Wink

I am not 100%, but I am pretty sure that :

Starting to get my setup ready, so I have a bunch of (dumb) questions:

- K64 needs 4 or 1 pci-e power plug?
Looks like 4.  See https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=239377.new However, one pci lead from the psu with 2x 6 pin connectors will give a total of 150w (75w for each 6pin), so you could probably use splitters to get 4 pcie connections and power it that way. the k64 needs 128w
Quote
- K64 comes with 4 or 1 heatsink?
I would assume 4 from seeing the k16 hashing video, we will get enough heatsinks to cover everything that needs a heatsink though... for all we know it might come with 16 small heatsinks Wink  Unless this info is in here somewhere and I missed it?
Quote
- Is fan needed? or passive cool is okay? If yes does terrahash provides fan? If no, what size fan do we need? 1 fan or 4 fans? Wink
My understanding is that you will not get a fan, depending on your environment passive might be ok, but I wouldn't try it.  # of fans you need will depend on what size you choose I guess  Grin  You can see the DX large has 3 case fans on it, so you shouldn't need very much air movement for a single k64
Quote
- In general how many k16 can a pci-e plug support?
k16 takes 32w, so a 6 pin could support 2 (with a splitter)

I'm a bit confused about how 8 pin PCIE to 6 pin PCIE splitters work. 8 pin PCI-E devices can provide up to 150W, but a 6 pin PCI-E device can only provide 75W. I also understand that if you use 6 of the 8 pins on a 8 pin PCI-E device, it only supplies 75W in order to be backward compatible (i.e. you need to use all 8 pins to get 150W).

If you use a splitter to go from a 8 pin to 2x 6 pin PCI-E device, does each 6 pin device get 75W or 37.5W? I suppose that it may depend on how the PCI-E splitter is wired and whether or not it uses all 8 PCI-E pins.

Interesting read:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/power-supply-specifications-atx-reference,3061-12.html

I have my 30GH BFL unit running on 1 6pin PCIExpress cable & have no problems. It supposedly consumes 130+ watts.

I canceled my paypal dispute. I'm now commited for this purchase.
