Yes the stock heatsink is not designed for fanless operation. Even at base frequency and lowest voltage you risk overheating with no airflow.
Keep in mind those little fans have about 2cfm coming out of them, so you can easily get a ultra quiet 120mm fan and that will provide more than enough airflow at close range to keep it cool with very little noise. If your going this route I wouldn't do it unless you have a heat gun and can directly measure the temp of the small heatsink on the top (should be under 80c max).

Thanks for the info, I was thinking (for the other guy) that one may get away with it at lowest core/mem voltage/freq but I believe you if not. Yes I will get the IR temp meter from work, currently I am measuring anywhere between 30-40degs on the heatsink that is on the component side of the PCB (other side than stock fan), that's at 832Mhz. I have some others at 900Mhz but can't measure those as easily without the gun. I assume by small heatsink you mean the one that is where the minifan is?

This is in fact what I enjoy soooo much about the MLD2, the way we can tune and customize and play with it. That's just so much fun and awesome. So, great job!!

with 12 volts  moves 133 cfm and is a bit noisy

I thought the fans in your video were quite loud already!, I have 11 MLD2s (+3 external fans but they make little sound) and I am on the limit of what is 'bearable' before I have to move to it out (not possible) or do something. I am also thinking of removing the stock fans and go for external cooling only. But I prefer USB powered fans as it is easier, I have loads of (powered) USB ports, but no 9-12V ports.
I am looking at something like the AC infitinity usb fan, 53cfm per unit, x2 = also 100cfm. Thanks for the suggestion philipma1957; what model Scythe fans are you using? I only have the one MLD and no USB hub, but I may go that route as it seems like a better solution overall for multiple sticks -- until then I've got to sort out the one fan I've got. I dig your setup with the 1050ti covering the cost of the dual Moonlanders hashing on tbdice  Cool

Can anyone point me to instructions how to operate the moonlander silently?
Which settings etc...?
Or even without fan?

Hashrate is not so important for me, but it should be as silent as possible.

To be serious  it needs a fan.  So I think  you won't have silence.

Even if you set  low settings it would over heat.

I suppose if you attach a monster heat sink it could work silently.

It works, but initial diff for nicehash is like 64K + so it could take hours to submit shares. As long as bfgminer is showing that the sticks are hashing you'll have a chance to submit a share, it will just be very slow. If your mining on there over the course of months it wont matter since over a long time you'll submit enough shares that your average hashrate will be what its supposed to be, but if you like watching "Share Submitted" nicehash(and other pools that don't have lower diff ports) is not your best bet.

Im sure if enough of you open tickets with them they will open a "low-diff" port.

For a single moonlander 256-2k diff is a good range. Anything higher/lower will produce too fast/too slow shares. Don't forget that it does not matter what diff your connected at the pool in terms of performance/payouts, its just your variance is greater the higher the diff which averages out over time.

With that said, whats the recommended USB powered attachment that can handle the power draw of a single Moonlander 2? Something like this work?

Yes, but it can support max 2 MLDs. Forf 15$ more you get a unit (also by Plugable) that can fit four MLDs (although maybe not at full speed). Note that depending on the USB port orientation and spacing often you cannot fit a MLD in every port, but only every other port. The model you link to is ok, as the powered ports are on the ends of the USB hub.

Hey all,

Looks like my Moonlander's fan died - it was working fine last night, I plugged it in this morning and it spun up and then got slower and slower until it stopped completely. Still a solid green LED, no HW errors, and it attempts to start mining via bfgminer - but no action. Could it be a hardware setting, or maybe a driver issue as I'm running macOS High Sierra?
Also, there was a post some pages back about a replacement fan for the Moonlander but I can't find it, any info on that would be appreciated!

is there a list of pools these work with and pools they don't? I'm trying to mine on multipool.us and it connects and shows accepted shares but the site doesn't show any hashrate. Works fine on litecoinpool

I had mine working just fine on multipool.us.

I'm currently using mining-dutch.nl and I was using hash-to-coins.

I started with the MLD for just 4 weeks ago (poolmining via litecoinpool.org), so one learns fast. With such a small hashrate, one could consider if solomining (not sure how to setup but there are some messages on it in this thread; the bfgminer that works for the MLD2 does not support solomining, so there are some workarounds needed I recall) is a more interesting alternative. Then it is more like a lottery and for sure the chances of finding a block are higher than anywhere else.

At 2.3Mh/s for a year you will earn 0.11LTC (poolmining at current difficulty, in practice less as difficulty will rise through the year).
However there is a 0.8% chance to mine 25LTC in solominig within 1 year. 0.008x25 = 0.2LTC, so that seems a good bet, and 25LTC x say 250$/LTC = 6250$ at a chance of 1:125 and an investment of 65USD is a return of 6250/65/125 = 77% is not bad. You don't find that in any lottery. Of course there is 99.2% chance that after 1yr you sit with nothing other than the investment of 65$. Once can do worse than that, especially with just one MLD2.

Just some thoughts on how to make the most of a MLD2 Smiley  Others can probably pitch in here too with their views.

The fan is/seems to be running at fixed speed, so silent means : remove fan (see page 1 for instructions, easy just unscrew and unlock the connector).
Then there is no noise whatsoever. But to avoid problems with heat, you should go down to the lowest frequency setting (384Mhz, you define this in the startup bat file, see page 1), AND trim down core voltage. You would do that with the fan on first, i.e., define clockfrequency at 384, turn down core as much as it goes with keeping hardware errors < 1-2%, you may even tweak down a bit mem voltage too. Once that's ok, remove the fan and it will be completely silent. You can run this directly from any PC USB port. With one MLD at 384Mhz the hashrate will be 2.2Mh/s, that won't give you much of a return though. To be precise 0.07$/day at current difficulty and LTC value.

Are there any recommended voltage settings for a macbook pro usb port? (Might be the same for any laptop)

I will only run one ML2


It might be cool to collect settings for common setups. ex:

 - Macbook Pro
 - Regular Windows laptop
 - ..
