The fans are sleeve bearing, so they will spin up faster after the sleeve is worn in which causes them to make more noise. Nothing wrong with them, just couldn't afford putting in 5+ USD ball bearing fans for a $50 miner. Only issue with first batch fans is that they overshot the RPM after sleeve wear-in so they spin closer to 13K RPM instead of 10K. Next batch will have this resolved and should have some extra fans if anyone has one that spins way too fast.

FYI high quality ball bearing replacement for these would be something like this, but as you can see they are not cheap.

I'm interested in upgrading the fans for the units I will receive and I see the costs associated with that, these fans are bare wire, what connector and crimp ends are needed to terminate it? I have a digikey account, can you link the pins/connectors?

Its  JST 2.5mm 2 pin connector something like this

Not sure about the crimp connector that would fit into that though. Its a pretty standard part so shouldn't be too hard to find.

Cheers for putting the original fan on. I don't see bolts on mine. Were some of them glued on? I am planning to remove the existing fan as it is not working this morning. Seized up. I will point two adjustable USB fans at it. One facing the heat sink and one at the back where the original fan blew. That should be plenty to cool it I believe. Anything to watch out for when removing it?

Some of the very first units have the fan glued on before I got the custom made heatsinks...you should be able to pry it off pretty easily.

Ok I asked before if the fan was supposed to be wicked loud. Well I think mine is crapping out now. The thing screams like it has a bad bearing. My question is can I disconnect the fan and put a USB fan to blow on it and provide the cooling? I would even put 2 on it since they are so quiet. One pointed at the heat sink and one at the other side. Ohh and is the fan easy to remove?

Same issue .

I pulled the bad fan and I run very well using an external fan.

I think three fans are reported as defective by you me and a third person

            1. How do you measure fan speeds/rpms?
            2. What is approx. lifetime of fans included?
            3. Which particular model (of fan) would you use if cost would't be an issue? or any of ball bearing will do?

            4.How can I use some kind of bfgminer record? to be able to see what happend like 3 or 5 hours ago (errors, restarts, block finds...). I know what letters means but I want to see it as some
               kind of data file with all details through the time like I see it live on monitor. Is it even possible?

Thanks for putting a fan on there anyway, it's much appreciated. Mine run pretty quiet and keep my three sticks cool enough without the hassle and cost of an external fan.

Not sure why you compare a PC to a usb hub, sure you could get a cheap PC for the price of a usb hub, but you are still left with about 2-3 USB ports and if you plan on running 3 miners on a PC you most likely won’t be able to fit them side-by-side or have enough power to keep three running on a cheap PC.

How many are going to actually fit? 6?
I've been using a $40 Anker hub that ran 2 sticks at 954mhz flawlessly, but is limited to 900mhz with 3 on it. Expecting a second one today to get my other 3 sticks going. OK, not as clean as one unit, but significant cost difference, plus I've not seen anyone say how many sticks they can run on that hub you linked to and at what speed. If the ports are actually limited to 2.1A that may not be enough to crank the speed up.
According to German Amazon site, Anker 60w 3.0 hub can provide max 0.9A per port and as my research goes on I am pretty sure there are no hubs providing more then 1A pro port except those industrial ones costing $100+...
Dam so many responses I dont think my phone can handle it haha, well..in response to game_of_coins yeah there should’ be much inside of a usb hub, witch also makes me wonder why they are so expensive, but then again it could contain some ICs that help distribute power and amps to specific ports that need it when used, I don’t use a RPI, I would only have the hub connected to my MACBook and plugged into either a power strip or the wall..as for cooling I would utilize a 14” fan that constantly blows air on the hub/miners, it doesn’t bother me for sleeping because I enjoy the ambient sound of a fan on. Not talking about a computer fan that sound alike a jet plane but a house fan, and maybe I’ll include some smaller usb ones too. Yes you are also right on the hub availability, most cheap ones only put out 900mha even ones I saw for 60-70usd are about 1a max, unless someone can find one that is more per port at a good value..and just a quick shoutout to all the Mac users out there who are running high Sierra with new driver..if you could message me that would be great, because I have some questions on how to troubleshoot some issues I’m having..like miner stops hashing during mac sleep, pools are still not deleting after removal and save, and possibly attempting to mine other script coins..thanks
 and just so the creator of this thread doesn’t get mad we went super off topic on usb hubs maybe start a new thread or continue an existing one haha..

This one looks good, it can provide max 2.1A per port, so 4 sticks+Rpi+fan should go. I'll think about it (and will try to find it closer to me due to post/taxes). No, I don't intend to use PCs or laptops instead of hubs, I just compare prices because I can't imagine whats inside hub for $150. I know whats inside $200 laptop. Hub should be bunch of wires, some kind of trafo/regulator, usb ports and housing. I just hope in my poor knowlage somebody is having fun...
Now, on topic. Do you or anybody knows how to get some kind of bfgminer history? I can see on my terminal screen whats been happening last 5 minutes, accepted shares and all, but I want to look before. I want to know what happend during night, what kind of errors I had and so... Is there any file with those data and how to approach it...? I am on Linux.

if you pull the fans  that hub will fit 10.

the  stock fans are not that good if you crank up the gear past 756

Very happy with my units! These are with stock settings a clock speed of 796 and two USB fans to keep them cool its Summer here in Australia!
My knowlage is under average, so please someone correct me, but I think this is not best setup. Your errors are well above 1% because your hubs can not supply enough power for 3 sticks at that rate. Nextium hub is power supplied with 12V/2.5A which is insufficient for 3 miners @ cca. 4.5mh/s. At post #539 @racebyu is stating he has 2.4amps power draw per one stick @5mh/s. I repeat: I have no hubs at all, have only one stick and know less than average community member.

You will see under powered usb miners drop off on the hash rate and slowly go down, that is why the rest in the new software to my knowledge.
The more current available the better these will be able to run smoothly, I have zero issues with the higher current supply and working flawless.
More current is your friend here for higher hash rates of over 3.8Mh.

I am pulling this one with @ozcointrader's (regards) post because I have one stick but am excpecting more in February so I'll need a hub at some point and I want to be sure it can deliver 2amps per port for at least 3 sticks. I saw his post and hubs, liked them, but googling says 2.5A alltogether (so 3 of them can pull 0.8A each. Am I missing something here?) Haven't found any hub providing 2A per port bellow $150 which is a shame. For $150-$200 you can buy used PC or laptop so I can not understand what the hell is in them for that price...

I don’t know about macs but in Windows, there is an option in Device Manager that stops the pc from turning off USB ports
Maybe I’ll give that a try and see if there is something in Settings to change that..thanks for the tip

I’ve had this issue where the miner will be hashing normally with my mac on, awake, and no problems..running fine. But when my mac goes into “rest mode” aka, when the screen goes black and it’s “sleeping” the miner will stop hashing and when I press a key to awake my computer again..it will start hashing right away.(I can tell because there is the red light blinking like it normally should but when my MAC goes into sleepmode the red light will stop completely.) I’ll get all these funky errors when I log back in, viewing the terminal, such as pool is dead, to asic stopped hashing attempting to restart, it even spammed me with a lot of rejected shares yesterday(I never had that happen) but the thing is, I’ve had this miner running for 16 hours before the last three days when this started happening, even when my mac was in “sleep”mode for 90% of that time. I even tried it on the hub and does the same, tried it on the computer USB port, does the same..so you think that it’s because my computer is in sleep mode and disconnects from the miner?? Thanks

Has anyone figured out a good way to single out a problematic miner in an array of miners?  I rather not have to run them all individually to find the problem child.

how is one a problem? you can usually tell if one jammed up by looking at the red light..

I have an array of 30 of these things and there are 1 or 2 that will drop off to 2MH or so after a few hours, staring at blinking lights looking for the one that is blinking slightly slower doesn't seem like the most efficient use of time.  I was hoping someone had a clever trick or something they knew of.
