I've added the bitcoind latency stat to each pool. A faster bitcoind connection should mean fewer stales and fewer orphan blocks for the whole pool.

My public node is currently offline.  Servers are being moved around.  It should be back up soon.

EDIT: I'm back online running 8.2-47-g1b5afde

I miss p2pool, has its luck changed at all?

Yup, I just re-joined about a week ago.  There's been a run of good luck lately but I'm just glad I'm back anyway.

Yeah, it's at ~150% 7 day luck. http://p2pool.info

Also, I found my second block with only 600 MH/s today. Smiley

Good job, everyone is upgrading pretty fast: http://p2pool.hopto.org:9332/static/nodes.html

Lets hope it lowers the stales a bunch when it kicks in.

P2pminig is counting SD=1 shares for payout, p2pool nodes SP=~500 shares (or more depends on pool power).

Yeah, I am pretty new to this, I don't get what SD and SP are here.  Is that share difficulty plus a typo?  How do you reduce the difficulty of a share to 1 and still get a meaningful result?
SD=Share Difficulty
And yes, SP is a typo, lol. Smiley
SD of p2pool depends on total pool power. When pool power is about 250GH SD is around 500. More power=>higher SD.
Thats why variance for small miners can be too big. On higher SD (750 and more) miners like me <200MH can have full 24hrs w/o share and not get paid for block. P2pool uses PPLNS for last 24hs payout so you need have at least one share per day.
P2pmining node is using SD=1 shares to calculate payouts, so variance is much lower and depends only on total p2pool luck.

Yeah, I don't even like it at 350ghash+ and I'm at 5000-6000 or so.  I've been waiting for it to drop back to sub-300....

P2P Mining actually uses a variable share difficulty according to their total hash rate as well. It's currently at somewhere around 4, but you can set a static difficulty if you add it after a + in your username (like address+2 if you want 2 difficulty shares all the time).

You need to write up some custom programming, if you intend to do merge mining also, like P2Pmining does.

I have read about p2pmining, and I don't really get it - it even things out somehow - so I can't see that this is something I need to consider right now.

Thanks for the help Smoov and Krak
P2pool advatages over all other pools:

I was referring to the specific differences of http://p2pmining.com/ to normal p2pool mining.  They reduce variance somehow but I don't see how.

P2pool advatages over all other pools:
- decentralized - no DDOS attack possible
- you can use any public node as backup pool when your node is down
- no pool operator - noone can keep/steal blocks
- only 0.5% fee by default for forrestv as developper (you can change it up or down)
- transaction fees are split by miners
- extra reward for block founder
