A new player serving the youthful US legal cannabis industry is rising – and this time, it seems the sky’s the limit.

The idea of a cannabis altcoin is nothing new. Potcoin, Dopecoin and Leafcoin have all had a stake in the space, and have met with varying degrees of success, and now Cannacoin is inching into the market with its promise to achieve real changes in the industry.

Born out of the Northwest Greenthumb community centered on Seattle, Cannacoin is designed to “provide an excellent well balanced transactional currency for cannabis users and supporters around the globe,” creator Josh told Coinjoint back in March.

“So much demand”

Josh, or to give him his more popular subreddit pseudonym, Subcreative, envisages the need for the legal cannabis industry to have access to a currency which is both more flexible than traditional means and able to create some much-needed slack for various elements of the supply chain.

As Coinjoint reports, state regulators are looking to impose hefty 25% tax levies on producers, processors and retailers in addition to point of sales tax. A cryptocurrency solution hence seems an obvious innovation in order to loosen the grip of the powers that be.

In the pipeline are POS terminals and contactless payment cards using the same near field communication technology as contactless debit cards.

The project has its skeptics, however, and creators were quick to rebut the naysayers on forums such as Bitcointalk.

“Why Cannacoin? We already run and operate Washington state’s largest medical marijuana social platform […] and 1,000 local medical patients ready to accept and use Cannacoin on our website and within the community,” user Cannacoin wrote upon the launch in February.

Announcement: Cannacoin now on US based exchange Bittrex.com!

The team and I have heard the calls from the community and today, we're excited to announce that Cannacoin has partnered with Bittrex.com to bring the community an order book for CCN/BTC trading!

Our aim is to provide reputable exchanges that provide a not only great service but great relationships to our community hence why we're limited to only 2 exchanges. I hope that by incorporating a large exchange like Bittrex it will not only strengthen our current economy but it will help to bring in new investors and support which will help to build the Cannacoin economy at a safe and sustainable rate and prepare us for futures exchanges such as MintPal or Cryptsy.

I encourage everyone to hop over and show Bittrex some support and start trading CCN today!:

You're arguments are not even valid and are incorrect.

I was basing my information on that Bitcointalk thread, which was correct... I was merely making an observation.

Basically canna launched a month after c-coin. And the original canna OP post was after c-coin as well.
Those are the only facts you need to know to know that Canna needs to change its ticker...asap.
Additionally, the fact that c-coin is on more exchanges only shoots canna in the foot when it comes to ever getting on those exchanges and it becomes a race as to which coin will be listed first because both coins will not be listed with the same ticker.

Unfortunately, CCN is used for two coins and in my opinion, I actually would prefer XCN, but we are already well on our way and have a much larger userbase at this point than C-coin.

We are not concerned that C-coin is on any exchanges listed as CCN.  This won't cause any confusion for our main purpose of the coin because we are building a payment network for NWGT.org and all of our 16,000 users on that forum will have specific instructions on which exchanges to use and how to obtain CCN for their purposes.

Take your pick. But now that you have some activity swirling around in your community it might be best to act now. Just doing the above research showed me cannabiscoin (420) seems to have feet on the ground and is hustling up exclusive deals with dispensaries.

We are not an anonymous group of people on the internet just making some nifty altcoin.  We are building very solid payment rails using Cannacoin for NWGT.org as well as businesses and websites currently in the works.

I am for all the cannabis coins and spoke with colleagues years ago (yes years) that the mmj community should be using btc because of all the banking, credit card issues and many of the additional federal laws passed that prevented the safe keeping or transport of funds by the mmj industry.

Good luck with your endeavors. As you can tell, duplicate ticker symbols are a pet peeve of mine. Sorry if it seems "ranty"

Since you are all for coins such as these, why not join forces with us and combine our efforts together?  I personally see a way out of this dilemma by working together, having the C-coin team join with the Cannacoin team.

Hi just noticed theres another CCN out https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.5234572

No activity since Apr. 27th, and Cannacoin surpassed it on the Mintpal vote as well as is now on http://www.lovecrypto.com/vote

You're arguments are not even valid and are incorrect.

It is not like CCN was an old buried ticker symbol. When the Canna OP was created CCN was in use just a few days prior (so readily available to see).

When an outside investor, whether it be time or money, sees the lack of due diligence to check for a ticker symbol conflict it is not good.

420 would have worked, but it too is now snagged by cannabiscoin. MMJ is available, but cannabiscoin uses mmjcoin as their facebook.

What's left?

CANNA
SATIVA
INDICA
HYBRID
MJCOOP
KAYA
BUD
GREEN
MMJ (?)

Cannacoin-Qt version 2.0.0.0 Release:

The team and I are proud to bring you the latest version of Cannacoin v2.0 which has patched the OpenSSL heartbleed exploit, fixed transaction malleability as well as introduced some new functionality and a new splash screen at startup to the wallet. There's a few other cool new features I'm sure you may find in the wallet like "copy transaction id", "Coin Control" or QR codes for Windows users. In really though, a lot of the changes and fixes we've implemented have been "under the hood" so to speak including a number of performance enhancements as well as peer2peer network improvements. Overall, this release will bring us up to date with Litecoin 0.8.7.1 (if anyones interested in the base build) and also provide us with a stable platform to build from.

I want to thank everyone who was involved in this release for all the hard work and countless hours of debugging, compiling, build testing etc.. this couldn't have happened without you! Met with the Cannacoin team today in Seattle.  We've got a stellar team -- the best I've seen.  Open-source, open-community, 100% transparent.  We are building Cannacoin cooperatives that will take Washington state by storm this year.  Anyone else that is like-minded and wants to be involved in this project come to our IRC #cannacoin and get some free coins... it's almost always raining CCN in there! Wink

We've got some really awesome things in the works!

Did I also mention the Cannacoin team spans West Coast to East Coast, from Washington state, through Oregon, all the way down to San Diego, over to Florida, up to New York, across the pond to the U.K., and we've only just begun?

Bill,
Let's hear your ideas for how we could grow Cannacoin in Tacoma.  Are you familiar with http://www.nwgt.org/ ?

Cannacoin is being built in tandem with NWGT and will be leveraging it's vast network to implement payment solutions for the Cannabis industry in Washington state.  Long-term, this network will be expanded to include other states as well.  We are exploring all options to expand this network and are completely open to all ideas and others' participation.

I hope you come join us on Freenode IRC in #cannacoin!

I'm starting a Cannacoin meetup in the local area if you're ever interested in joining. The invitation is open to anyone in the local area and interested in learning more about cannacoin or for those looking for collaborators looking to build projects and teams. I'll have more details hopefully later tonight.
