Over the last few years we have seen Manchester United spending a lot of money building their squad. But even then their performance is quite poor.
They have been struggling to set up their strategy, short term or long term. They don't know where to put their belief in, their coaches or their players. Many seasons, they focused on short term achievements and forgot about long term plan. Some seasons, they gave power to their players, not their coaches and I can use Pogba as an example for their failed strategy. Believing in Pogba, keeping him in the club, sacking Mourinho and we all see what Pogba did after that. Almost no considerable contributions for Manchester United after Mourinho left.
They can't pick the right players for their squad. And they are not learning from past mistakes. They have made similar mistakes this season as well. They added Hojlund to the squad for 75 million. Hojlund is a talented player. But he lacks the ability to score consistently. He might be able to play well in the future, but that too cannot be said for sure. Manchester United need an experienced striker this season. They are planning for the future without correcting their weaknesses. Manchester United could have added a proven scorer to the squad without Hojlund.
In this summer, their transfer looks very similar to previous seasons. They bought Hojlund with very expensive price and again, facing with a failed transfer with very expensive cost.
They did not improve their defense system in the summer and it will still be one of their biggest weaknesses in this season. Just a few first matches of season and they had to use Maguire, Johns in their central defensive positions. It's not a depth of a squad that can play in some competitions and can compete well in a long season.
