I think the 480 RX's power input configuration is a failure. It should use the 8 pin power input like the Nano.

After what I've been reading, I'm inclined to agree with this.

I'm considering returning the 4 I purchased and waiting for the Sapphire Nitro as it has an 8-pin connector.

The 6 pin PCIE should be able to handle up to 150W as that is widely used in the bitcoin ASIC mining. The GPU should allocate more power from the PCIE connectors, not from the PCIE slot.

yes but one consume 150w the other(1070) only 100w at 27MH

so with he same hash rate you get 50% more consumption, not soemthing that i would ignore especially on large scale

You also have to mention the price of the 1070 compared to the RX 480's one. When price will go to its normal area, 3x RX 480 = 1x 1070. Not something that I would ignore, especially on large scale.

All I can say is you guys are making me happy that I didn't pre-order these reference cards.  I hope everyone is able to tweak and massage them to work, but at this point I will wait to see what the aftermarket cards look like.  I have to say I am a bit disappointed in how these are working out for people so far.

All I'm saying is that 6 1070 is more hash and power is the same as 4 480
Again it is possible to OC both - but I it needs to be tested for 24/7 stable results


6 * 1070 = 6  * $400+ = $2400+
6 * 1070(30MH) = 180 MH

6* 480 = 6 * $200+ = $1200+
6* 480(27MH) = 162 MH


Undervolted cards vs 480 that has yet to be undervolted, etc.
Comparing NVIDIA to AMD when NVIDIA costs double what the RX 480 costs.


Its a little premature to start making comparisons until we explore in detail what the 480 can do.

All I'm saying is that 6 1070 is more hash and power is the same as 4 480

What is the best power / hashing result at the moment?

The AMD R9 390 has 512 bit memory bus. It can have 30MH at 1125MHz, the 480 has 256 bit bus, to get the same hash, it needs to run at 2250 MHz. But it is less efficient.

Borrowing from the powered riser concept:

As a bandaid to the PCIe power problem, couldn't they make a 0.5" high molded connector that has a male connector that plugs into the MB socket and on top has a PCIe female connector for the RX480 card?

From the side of this connector, out comes the power cable with the standard 4 pin plug. Even though the card will standup in the slot by 0.5", things should be ok. After all the ASUS 380 stands fairly tall.

Here you can see 4 stock 480 are doing 710w per system - even if you count 80w for the system - its 158w per card!
So its nowhere near 112W GPU-Z is showing for eth mining - apparently its just ASIC (GPU) only and the rest 55W is board and memory - but its not showing it GPUz
Sure you are hoping for BIOS mods and undervolting - but that to be seen what hash and power draw could be achieved
so it should be 1028 W per 6 gpu system (will be a bit more with risers added and psu efficiency loss) - I got 630 for 6 1080 at 23mhs each and I get 730 with 6 1070 at 27mhs each for the whole system... (that includes 21W for the 3 noctua 140mm 3000rpm fans in the system)

did you managed to push the 1070 to the same hash as linux, on windows or still not possible? i see that the last drivers on win 10 are already wddm 2.1

Not yet - should be available next week, but yes - its easy to get over 30mhs with oc in Win 10 - but thats too much on memory - it will not hold/will get the board damaged

mmh strange that guy said that they were stable at 37mh on linux, you tried pushing them so far to see if they can reach the same as linux?

Everyone can google "melted atx connector", we are about to see more of these.

You need the Asrock H61/81 pro btc and fill the two +12 V on the mother board or use powered risers now.

He's right. In a mining usage, you need specifical hardware, to deliver more power than the cards actually consume.

That doesn't fix the problem it just moves it to different connector. Molex, psu modular cable connectors both cable and psu side are next in line. Only real fix is new bios that limits the power drawn from pcie-slot/ riser. Or 8-pin pcie connector.
