Some help please: I just created a wallet and have a few basic questions:
1. Does the wallet HAVE to be on their site? Can't it be a local one like bitcoin-qt?
You can change the storage to local. You can save your wallet in a file and load it from a file.

2. I posted my address on the forum to get some first coins and I'm waiting (hoping it works!). The other option in their site is to have another user send me 300 or more ripples. Why 300???
3. Is there any other way to get XRP? Any exchanges?
It used to be that 300 XRP was the practical minimum to open an account, create a pathway so your account could hold BTC, and then trade BTC for XRP. So with 300 XRP, you could buy all the XRP you wanted. The reserve levels lowered recently, so 100 XRP will do now.

You can buy XRP from Bitstamp, bitmit, xrptrader, and a few other places.

The Ripple web client is not saving my contacts between sessions. Is it supposed to?
I'm using LocalBrowser mode. Is this why it initial wanted to store my blog on a server somewhere?

Or maybe I have a browser configuration option wrong somewhere.
I'm using Safari 6.0.3 on a OS X 10.8.3

I think I found a bug in the system.

If you attempt to trust someone with a new currency, it appears to be needing to be in a particular format.  For example, suppose A wants to trust B for 100 BIC pens.

A logs in, hits advanced, and then the green plus button.  He then trusts B for an amount of 100 "BIC".

However, if he trusts be for 100 "BIC - BIC Pens", then the trust will fail with this error...

"Trust granting failed to clear, reason: Missing/inapplicable prior transaction."

If A attempts to grant another trust, even in an established currency like USD, it will fail with the same error.

How do I get a Ripple invite/account?

I signed up on they're website, but that just put me on a mailing list.

Did I miss something?

Weird. Well then I have no explanation for what happened. Wormhole activity perhaps?

Wow. So somehow your mobile browser was saving your wallet without you actually doing anything, overwriting your changes.

No.  That was the first time I signed on using my mobile phone - in hopes it would make some changes that STICK.  Nothing was saved using any type of OS/Browser on any real computer.  (same wifi, so the problem is not ports/access)

The only way I know of that this can happen is if you save your wallet on one machine while it's open on another. If you do that, the last save wins and previous changes are lost. I haven't heard reports of that happening any other way.

I thought that too, but I have checked and double checked other computers in the house.

After an entire day of adding my contacts again and again every time I logged in to ripple, I was able to fix it - here's how.

I signed off ripple (computer).
I signed on via Galaxy - mobile phone (on same wifi connection) - added the contacts and signed off.
I signed back on (computer) and the contacts are there.

All computers were set to 'fetch wallet' from Payward only. It did not make a difference on any of my computers (windows, linux, firefox, chrome), but the mobile browser seemed to force the system to save changes.  I was never signed on to ripple on any two devices at once - still using only one computer every day - the same one I signed up from.

I'm new to ripple - works well.

Problem - contacts disappear, deleted contacts re-appear - issuer (in trading section) has to be entered again and again.

NOT a cache issue - tried 3 different computers (Ubuntu and Windows) - 2 different browsers (Chrome and Firefox)

Any ideas?

I'm making a list of public data of various kinds, so if you find any new Ripple contract or currencies that look interesting or if you wish to list your public Ripple ID, please feel free to update the list (link in signature).
