Sad to hear that people are still robbing people at gunpoint these days, this is such a rare occurrence in my country that I'm not even sure it happens at all.

I guess not everybody is so lucky.

Glad to see that these apps make it practically impossible for muggers to get away with the money though, if it was cash in his wallet or a credit card they would have been home free by now, but the security of these wallets kept them at bay. All that money is probably completely lost now though, since nobody will be able to login to the wallet to recovery his funds.

You'd be surprised. Ever visited Brasil or other latin american countries? If you talk to locals you'll realize how widespread such practices still are...

This can happen in almost any country. I heard stories of masked people at gunpoint causing one trader to give them a large amount in bitcoins, as well as stories of torture in order to gain access to cryptocurrency.
If you are an ordinary person, do not pretend that you have a cryptocurrency. If this has already happened, create a fake backup of the keys to the wallets on which you will store an extremely small amount for robbers.

Omicron is another FUD
This news is sad and also puts us on alert for being crypto users. Some think that by handling Bitcoin we are millionaires and it is not true. Not everyone who has Bitcoin is millionaires. We are just a community that is growing the ecosystem.
It is true that we must be careful with who we share our interests in Bitcoin and crypto. Anonymity may be the best option.
if we want Bitcoin to be increasingly known, being anonymous is very difficult!!  especially if you are an influencer..  during a crisis like this, people become greedy and emotional because of high unemployment, crime rates like robbery are sure to increase and will increase especially in poor countries.  being humble, not too flashy and hiding the truth (how much Bitcoin you have) is the best option..

The most idiotic thing anybody can do is to bounce to somebody to give you a seed, private key, secret key. On the off chance that they were programmers it was certainly their final retreat to take care of business.

If life is not there, then what is the need for money? As the police station was nearby, he could've just gone there and asked for help. Though in situations like these, one hardly knows what to do next, and he did what he thought would be best for the time being. RIP
But, what he could have done when they believed he has 10k while he actually had only 400 as I was reading the article and the victim's friend was involved and he told the suspects that Iroro has 10k and when he caught beaten and tortured he only could give them 400 which is all he had.
This, he gave away what he had but those people were not letting him go because they believed he had a lot more money with him because his friend betrayed his trust and for some reason believed he had 10k with him, this is important never tell anyone no matter how much you trust them how much money you are holding in your bitcoin wallet, the world is full of people like that which will try to take what it is rightfully yours and they will not care about the means they use to do it.

Nigerian Man Shot Dead by robbers to access his mobile phone with crypto

Quote
“Investigations so far have also revealed that the bosom friend of the victim arrested had hinted one of the suspects of the discovery of $10, 000 in the victim’s Bitcoin wallet and then contacted the other suspects for the robbery operation. “From the confessional statements of the suspects, their intentions for carrying out the operation was to dispossess Iroro of the $10, 000 in his Bitcoin wallet but were disappointed to find out that what was left when they struck was $400.

I don't want to bring this news, but I guess everyone in crypto should understand the dangers whether online and offline. And another sad thing is that the man doesn't have $10k, but rather $400.

Also, we need not to tell anyone of our bitcoin stash, otherwise others might be tempted to robbed us as what happen here.

Trust is really a major issue when we talk about money especially in the crypto world. It is sad to hear that your friend had planned the robbery after hinting that you have a large sum of money in your Bitcoin wallet. The killing was brutal, unethical, and unmerciful. The victim had $400, not $10,000. He had two children and just imagine how his long, hard-earned money, turned into something that can destroy the family's future.

This is a reminder that we must never show anyone even those we call "friend", our Bitcoin wallet. Robbers, of any sort had even upgraded and can even see your transactions through unstable and unprotected banking and transacting apps. To avoid crime and accidents like this, we must be very careful of whom we trust and to not let anyone see our wallet. Our lack of caution and too much trust can even lead us to our own perish.

damn this is really alarming because the crime involving crypto is increasing ,and having that 400$ is the root for killing ones life?
expecting $10,000 will surely disappointing them, this is why we need not to tell anyone about how much our wallet has,so this crime wont come in our part.

but piece of advice,if time comes this happens to you guys, please Give what they need and never resist because life is much important than anything else.
I agree that money must be way more important than money, because money can be earned when you live but life cannot be earned when you are not existent. I really don't know why he resisted when he saw 4 people are there and they have weapons, personally I would never ever resists in such situations because it does not even make sense. But that said, these 4 criminals must be hanged to set an example.

I heard there is some poverty in Nigeria as half of the population is below poverty line but killing someone for $400 must be seriously ill-minded and there is no way killing the person would benefit them in any way.

Please if anyone has any link on the judgement of these suspected criminals, like what punishment was given to them please link me to that article.

A lot of us are walking around with mobile phones, linked to Banking Apps that gives robbers access to all our money in our Bank accounts. So it is not just Bitcoiners that are vulnerable, because the money in your Bank accounts are just the same.

I was thinking the same , but i guess these robbers just want to be safe with anonymous transfer of funds. Bank can easily trace such transfer of funds using mobile banking apps (I'm not sure if there are another options to rob your funds in your bank account without being traced).
Anyway, this is a very sad news indeed. This is a desperate robbery, chances are, the robber knows this person personally because he knows that the victim are into cryptocurrency and was stashing cryptos in his phone.

Indeed in such situations like that of the victim, one would easily forget what should have been done at the moment. I faulted the victim because, having such amount of funds in your wallet demand that you keep it to your or family ones and not to a total stranger. Example like me: I have much friend from different ethnic groups but keep this forum out of them, just to ensure my second source of income is not known to them. Not that they're not aware of Bitcoin but me participating on forum campaigns to earn Bitcoin or other altcoins to my wallet. Let's be mindful of our actions in giving out secrets to strangers.

This is a really sad news Sad. This is why it’s very wrong to go around making people know that you’re into cryptocurrency, because whether you have it or not, they will assume that you have a lot of cryptocurrencies stashed in your cryptocurrency wallet and might attempt to rob you if it’s possible.
This also puts weight on why it is important to be as anonymous as possible from online world, I mean there are stalkers who once believe that you have a big amount of bitcoins will stalk your profiles and might even chase you down and it's a disastrous situation where you don't even have that much bitcoins which they believe you have and at least with cash thefts they can take what you carry with you and at least won't kill you.

I really think people should never brag about their involvement in crypto to people they don't know be it online or offline because you don't know if your best friend can stab you from back once they know you have a lot of money.

It is better to show yourself as moderate as possible even if you are rich, that saying has proved itself once again.

I believe what could save such things is the punishment must be severe and something like shot dead on the eye because if you can beat and kill someone for money then there is no reason there should be mercy shown towards you.

I often read that an eye for an eye will make the whole world blind, but then if there is no eye for an eye then there would be no fear among such criminals and such cases will only increase.

I feel so upset and angered for the little kids who lost their father for money, seriously something is wrong with people now days.

We had some discussion recently, people used to accept the behavior standard that their childhood neighbour have. For example, in old generations, if all the childrens father beat their children, then they will accept it as acceptable and will not hate their father. Similarly, if a child grows up in an environment that is full of violence, they will accept such action as acceptable too

We don't have universal living and education standard, especially family education environment, so everyone holds different view towards the same thing. Setting up heavy punishment will only stop those grew up in gentle environment but not those grew up in harsh environment

The only thing you can do is to strengthen your own defense, which unfortunately increased the distance between people

Very sad to hear this news , one should understand that .
Never , Never in any circumstances let people know how much money you have and how much you are capable of earning.
People doesn't get targeted by chance , it is something to do with the time when you told one of your close friends that you have millions of dollars in your mobile and someone overhead.
You know how they say .

Keep quiet let the success make the noise .

Please people take care of your personal safety.

yeah, one thing is reading about it after the fact, and another very different beast is the rush of emotions you get when being held at gun point. This guy probably felt so attached to his savings he preferred to give a fight, but as you say, at what cost?

This is the reason why I don't like people knowing that I am using Bitcoin in the first place because you never know who you gonna trust. It's better to be an anonymous than telling people that you are using Bitcoin. There are other ways to show them or introduce them about Bitcoin to promote adoption.

This is such a sad news, it is important to never tell anyone the value of your coins and if you live in a dangerous zone it may be desirable to not tell people about your involvement in cryptocurrencies at all since many people believe that those holding bitcoin are rich when in most cases that is not the case and it could make a you a target of different crimes, it is really upsetting that people get to the extreme of taking someone else life just to get some money.

I'm sure there won't be any thing the law enforcement is going to do do about this since crypto isn't legalized in Nigeria. Read sometimes ago about kidnappers asking for BTC as ransom.
I think the best way is to remain anonymous and not let any one especially strangers know you're into cryptocurrency.

This is the problem we have in African – particularly my country, Nigeria. There's a general perception that anybody that deals in cryptocurrencies is super rich and wealthy. Next thing you know, they try getting you to pay their bills, you refuse, they try to rob you. This is why I've kept my involvement in cryptocurrencies a secret on and off campus here in school . People in other countries are lucky though. It's worse here. I've experienced this on more than one occasion and it's wrong.

They just killed that man for nothing.  It is said that money is the root of all evil. Even close friends can gang up against their very own friend in situations like this. At best, It isn't recommended to publicly declare one's crypto worth.

This is why we should never reveal to anyone our assets as we will not know what they are thinking especially if we have huge amount of money that will encourage the robber to rob you. This is kinda sad to hear that one of crypto lovers has died because of his assets.

As long as we are holding huge amount of money the danger is always there either we are holding a fiat or a crypto currencies. And I am pretty surprise that robbers nowadays are starting to upgrade also.
