This is why we should never tell anyone about our cryptocurrency holdings. Not even my close friends and family members know that I own cryptocurrency. Now this strategy has its own risks. For example, if something happens to me, then the wallet will become inaccessible and the coins would be lost forever. But compared to the risks if my coin holdings are publicized, I would rather choose this.

Nothing lasts forever
Jumping on someone to get him to give you the seeds/private keys/passwords is the most stupid thing someone could do. If they were hackers, it must have been their last resort to accomplish the task. Roll Eyes
I guess you didn't read the post carefully. Hackers were not the ones to shoot the guy.
The victim's friend knew that he had $10k worth of bitcoin in his wallet and so he had all of this planned.
He gathered some more people and encountered this murder.
I feel pity for the victim since his own friend did this to him.

This news is devastatingly alarming. Aside from the precautionary measures that everyone should be practicing, we should also be reminded that sharing of too much information about our private transactions and current status is a great threat to our security. When it comes to money, may it be flat or cyrptocurrency, we should be cautious of our actions and vigilant to our decisions regardless of the amount we possess. Along with the fame that Bitcoin gains through time, is the danger that is being formed unto the minds of people who wants to take advantage.

Sad story but I guess this is what can happen in a country where people are desperate for enough money just to live. Terrible shame he was killed for what some of us see as a trivial amount of BTC.

This news is full of sadness, killing a person because of such a relatively small amount of money. Apparently, the deceased once lost his caution and, perhaps, told someone about his Bitcoins, perhaps even the same killers. It's scary of course to read this.

Thanks for sharing this news, everyone regardless of how much they are holding should be aware of the possible risk.
Some people may think that once you are involved in crypto, you are holding a good amount of money, that kind of misconception might lead us to danger.

The robbers might have really known much information about the victim to know that he deals in cryptocurrencies.  We all need to be vigilant of our security and the people we share our online dealings with. This is really sad news to hear at this time and moment, my heart really goes out to the family of the victim at this sorrowful time.

For $400 money, a life has been loss. Maybe the rumor of having a $10k on his wallet will be the greatest gossip of his life. People should not or at least tell how much is in your posession cause other people will probably get tempted with it. Sad thing is, cryptocurrency has been involved. Hacking is a common scene in cryptocurrency but this one is worse which violence has been made just to get the funds. So sad, RIP for the guy.
$400 might look small but it isn't in Nigeria. $400 is around 140,000 naira which is more than what many bankers earn in a month. Aside from the crypto ish, Nigeria is a lawless country and unfortunately, not even police officers can save him because they are even more dangerous than harm robbers. It is becoming a norm for police officers to search citizens phones in Nigeria and ones they discover bitcoin wallets that have money ( for many of them that know what bitcoin is), you cannot go free  Grin you will have to settle them or they will detain you.

Dump it!!!
Sad to hear that people are still robbing people at gunpoint these days, this is such a rare occurrence in my country that I'm not even sure it happens at all.

I guess not everybody is so lucky.

Glad to see that these apps make it practically impossible for muggers to get away with the money though, if it was cash in his wallet or a credit card they would have been home free by now, but the security of these wallets kept them at bay. All that money is probably completely lost now though, since nobody will be able to login to the wallet to recovery his funds.

Robbery goes wrong, taking someone's like at $400? What kind of person can do that, specially people that they know of? You can't blame the victim though, we can say that he should have given it to the robbers, but as crypto enthusiast, we know how hard it is to earn Bitcoin.

I do hope that the justice system in Nigeria is firm and fair. Give those criminals what they deserve for, and for us, don't do anything that can attract people, keep a low profile, never talk about our crypto, specially in public and even to people that we know of.

This is one sad news. RIP to the victim.

Robberies do happen, all the time. It does not matter whether what one has is in crypto, in fiat, in precious collection, in jewelries, and so on. One of the advice of the authorities when someone is robbing you, especially at gun point, is to just give what the robber wants. It is pointless to resist when what is at risk is your life itself.

On a side note, the transparency that crypto gives to its users may actually be a double-edged sword. How much your wallet contains is open to the whole public if your address is known. It is therefore best to maintain several addresses so that if you own a significant amount of crypto you can divide them up and store them in different addresses. Better this way than become a prey to criminals.

"The victim, Iroro Wisdom Ovie, a father of two, was beaten and shot by unknown gunmen last month at his Lucas area residence along the Police Station axis of Abraka."

Really really unfortunate, but the dude should've taken the small additional effort to at least try to transact on the police station itself(or at least literally outside the doors of the police station). This probably shouldn't have happened if he took the extra safety precautions. RIP.

It's saddens me to know that there are people who needs to suffer like this because of money/crypto. I guess the robbers are aware that the victim was a crypto user. He should have surrendered his funds rather than fighting for it which has put his life at a big risk. Battling for our earnings and our lives has no sense if we'll lose both of it. Just a reminder for everyone, we should know how to keep things in private so it will not attract criminals which could ruin our lives.
So it's best to keep quiet so that criminals don't have the interest or tendency to steal our hard-earned money. It is better to keep quiet and not to let others know about the possible income we have in crypto as this may cause us to risk our lives. It's best to be careful because even outside the internet there are still criminals who try to steal our hard earned money.

This is a reminder that Bitcoin and crypto are not a game, Bitcoin is actual money and if you keep your fiat account balance hidden from others, the same should be applied to your crypto balances...
People will do anything for money, and the word is spreading.... so when crypto is well known, chances are that the robbers no long want your ATM code, but are actually searching for your private keys...

It's definitely sad news to see a fellow Bitcoin supporter shot dead just because of owning it. You can never turn back time, it's important to take actions and precautions as early as now to prevent this kind of event happening. I did read the article and it's scary to think that this could happen to anyone. Be vigilant.

It's sad that this man died, but telling other people that you have bitcoins in a wallet in your phone is the most stupid thing to do.I would never tell anyone that I have bitcoins,I would never store them in a wallet in my Android device. How the hell they knew that he had 10K USD?Was he lying and bragging about having lots of BTC?You shouldn't tell other people how much money you have.Especially in a third world country.

Nigerian Man Shot Dead by robbers to access his mobile phone with crypto

Quote
“Investigations so far have also revealed that the bosom friend of the victim arrested had hinted one of the suspects of the discovery of $10, 000 in the victim’s Bitcoin wallet and then contacted the other suspects for the robbery operation. “From the confessional statements of the suspects, their intentions for carrying out the operation was to dispossess Iroro of the $10, 000 in his Bitcoin wallet but were disappointed to find out that what was left when they struck was $400.

I don't want to bring this news, but I guess everyone in crypto should understand the dangers whether online and offline. And another sad thing is that the man doesn't have $10k, but rather $400.

Also, we need not to tell anyone of our bitcoin stash, otherwise others might be tempted to robbed us as what happen here.

I dont know what people think for just $400 you will kill a person that's un acceptable.

You will count moredays in jail than finding a job to earn decent amount,if you will do such crime .

If you are a bitcoin holder's you should always be aware who to share your important information about your holdings there are always people behind you that just waiting for a moment to rub it from you.

Jeez, bad guys already have intentions even in much high technology related.
This should be also be lesson for some people who keep sharing the amount of their Bitcoins, well it's really *not so* advisable but still the more people know that you have Bitcoins  especially the amount, the more risk. It's also the same with fiat and any other cryptocurrency.

It is strange that this is getting media attention, because people are getting robbed every day and it is not getting special attention.  Roll Eyes I guess the fact that they thought that this guy is having $10 000 worth of Crypto currencies on his phone, makes this news worthy.  Tongue
Crypto + negative news = clicks I guess.  Undecided

A lot of us are walking around with mobile phones, linked to Banking Apps that gives robbers access to all our money in our Bank accounts. So it is not just Bitcoiners that are vulnerable, because the money in your Bank accounts are just the same.
Definitely, it's just that it's far riskier to do this with mobile banking simply because a name is affiliated with your bank account number. As with bitcoin, you could potentially get away with it if you mix your coins and don't do something stupid.
