It is not a stupid decision, it depends on the goal of each one. While it is not easy to trade Bitcoin for goods and services (on a large scale, nothing punctual as it is today) is an alternative. Well it depends on how people or individual want to take bitcoin in their life. Selling it was good but not in this kind of time where bitcoin price is low.
