Ethereum is great compare to ripple and I think investing on it will become more profitable this year compare to ripple but if you enough money to use for try to hold this both coin, I think it can also give you the profit you ever wanted.

eth is safer and much better than the ripple. but there is no split you share some percent of your funds to invest in the ripple. because the ripple also has good potential, so there's nothing wrong you invest your funds in the ripple. 
I think both coins are good, and my suggestion is better you divide your capital into 2, to buy ripple and ETH

If you have huge amount of money, invest on eth, otherwise go for ripple because its cheaper and its also good for long term investment and patient one, its price now is low at $.9. With this price, and with minimal amount of money you can invest with alt which has potential to grow up to $5 this year. But of course I always believe that eth is way way above in terms of investment. You can also invest on both eth and ripple with 70:30 ratio.
Ripple keeps growing but for now i prefer ethereum because of it's high price.
