Rarely I see people complaining about all the billions that are spent on leisure time, making very expensive movies, traveling, fast cars, luxury goods in general, including food or clothes, high tech and on all other million of things people buy everyday just to enjoy life.

I don't see most people saving their money to give to others in need.

They don't seem to really be ready to cut their spending in order to help others...

Going to Mars is just another thing that isn't really necessary, won't change the world or save it, but will make many people happy.

And that is enough to make things happen, no matter if they are expensive.

The delays to launch Starship were to be expected. We are not talking about jumping on a trampoline (to quote a russian joke).

https://spacenewshubb.com/2021/09/06/spacex-repairing-heat-shield-reinstalling-raptors-on-first-orbital-class-starship/

This heat shield is looking too familiar. It looks more and more like the one from the space-shuttle. I guess this was the best they could find and that their philosophy of "the better part is no part" couldn't be applied.

We'll see if it resists entering in the atmosphere better than the shuttle one or if this will end the dream of a really reusable (on a few hours) Spaceship.

But if something really goes wrong, the timeline of 2024 to put again humans on the Moon will be at risk.

One thing is to send Starship with goods to the Moon, another completely different will be to send safely humans.

It seems Musk is decided to test the Starship in block (super heavy buster and the spacecraft on top).

I think it would be more prudent to test first a flight with the buster alone. The chances of something going wrong would be smaller.

Well, Musk is Musk. All or nothing. Major expectation for the test of the biggest rocket which Humanity ever launched.

Mars is a shithole for good reason. Humans cannot survive naturally outside earth for good reason.

Remember, you are addressing millennials who's conception of the universe, and how construction projects are undertaken, comes almost exclusively from playing minecraft.  In their minds it should take two years tops to make half the planet into a sustainable utopian dream-base where humans can thrive...and some rich person will pay for it and get their lazy asses to the 'new world' because, well, reasons.

Broheim, between ze Nihilists and the Atheists, humanity is being purposefully steered towards a cataclysm. By the time interstellar travel is commonplace these unfortunate souls will be long dissolved in the reaction that is this cataclysm and the untouched catalysts will be applauding their great work as their sterile "utopia" comes into view. Their purpose is merely to provoke the unprovokable and create disillusion with both national guvernments and religious leadership.

I think immigration is a distant matter, and now it can only be a dream. Living on Mars requires a lot of air, water, and nutrients for human, and these will become major problems.

Don’t think too much about living on Mars. Radiation is a thing and I doubt that problem is going to be solved in our lifetimes. I guess living deep beneath the surface in caves is an option, but not a very good one for billionaires. The situation here on earth would have to get pretty bad for rich people to head to Mars.
We would be going back to the cave man days which would be a horrible state to live in and going back to step 1 in human life. I do not think rich people would live in those conditions and it will probably be working men that get sent up there to make the planet more inhabitable

But SpaceX and NASA are going to Mars and I'm very happy about this.

Obviously you are not a tax payer.

Good point.

Americans are going to Mars and will pay for it, taking all Humanity on the back site for free. Thanks. Signed, Humanity.

Now, seriously.

The USA wasted billions in over paid arms to quasi-monopoly corporations. 721 billions on 2020: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_budget_of_the_United_States

Certainly, it can spend 2.89 billions on SpaceX for it to take American astronauts to the Moon again and then to Mars with little more than that.

SpaceX is paying much more from its pocket. This is almost a free lunch for NASA and the USA.

"At the end of fiscal 2020, NASA will have spent more than $17 billion on SLS" (The Space Launch System) that is still on the ground and will at much fly twice in redundant voyages that SpaceX could do for a few millions (not billions) with Starship.
https://www.space.com/nasa-sls-megarocket-cost-schedule-oig-report-2020.html

It's SpaceX which is taking American astronauts now to the international space-station for much less than the Russians were asking and avoiding the national humiliation that was NASA paying to the Russians for this.

Mars is a nightmare.

With current technology, no one will be able to live in Mars more than a few years without major health consequences.

Desperate or adventurous people will be willing to go live there, but someone will have to pay for the voyage, build their houses and pay their salaries.

I can't see any economical reason to someone to make this investment. There will be political and scientific reasons to have small basis there, but not any colonization.

If they find some military or crazy scientists to live there 2 or 3 years until being replaced in order to keep a base, excellent.

I imagine in what health state they will return Earth.

But SpaceX and NASA are going to Mars and I'm very happy about this.

They really haven't thought this through have they? When woke alien complains about "human privilege" 100 years from now they will have to hand it back and their offspring will have to take the knee before martian olympics and hand over their inheritence to apologise for daddy's mistakes (white man bad) Grin

Not unless that these billionaires make their own cave the way they like it.  Cheesy
Money can buy anything, as they say, so yeah they can just build a cave customized for their lifestyle.

Though, this mars thing is making a lot of noises lately and no wonder China would say that they own it as well in the future.  Cheesy

And we can use Bitcoin move our values to there.

Imagine the first bitcoin billionaires are going to move to Mars  Cheesy Bitcoins would be the best currency for it since it can just be controlled as long as we have internet access. But we know that Elon Musk doesn't like bitcoins anymore. Maybe he won't accept it as form of payment to fly to Mars and then the first colony will likely be created by Elon Musk so he can fully control which currencies are going to be accepted. Maybe the whole Mars will run on Doge Coin.

My point is that there won't be the need for any transport system on the scale he is planning, at least in his lifetime. He is planing for hundreds of Starships.

the public advert is "go to mars for science and exploration"
"bore holes under cities for trains"
                             "use AI driving for cars"
"use AI tracking for space debris of satelites"
"use AI+ spectrophotoscopy for medical scans"

the capitalist pamphlet is actually
R&D consumer projects. have consumers pay
then use the results to:
mine asteroids(boring), self track 'payload' vehicles(AI) to grab and transport spacerock(starship)
separate it into raremetals(AI+spectrophotometry)
deliver it back to earth
sell on the commodities market by then 200tonne
