The entire "custom hardware" section is off-topic bullshit because there is no ASIC that actually exists and untill one does the whole lot belongs in speculation or gambling. Giving "hardware vendors" any credibility than is neccesary fuels the massive preorder scamming thats going on.

The whole section needs a similar warning to the long term lending section to beware of scams.
It wouldn't be appropriate in 'custom hardware' anyways cuz it would be production hardware. Smiley

Something built to the user's individual specs would be custom.

-- Smoov

I think you're confusing custom with homebrew.
I've always inferred that the forums was to discuss custom bitcoin specific hardware rather than general purpose gpus or fpgas.

I agree with Monster Tent's comment.
No confusion whatsoever.

When you're ordering a stock product from a company, you're ordering production hardware.

When you're ordering a product from a company, to be designed and assembled to the specs you provide to them, you're ordering custom hardware.

When you're cobbling together for yourself out of bits and pieces, and spare parts, which you design and assemble yourself, that is homebrew.

No self-respecting homebrew enthusiast would farm it out for someone else to do it for them.

You, sir, are the one confusing custom with homebrew.

At the very least it is an effect of free speech on this forum.
If it has the effect of turning 'free speech' into 'substantive speech' I'm all for it.

The only people the trolling is good for is those who like setting stuff on fire— not because the stuff is good or bad— but just because they want to watch the world burn.
Actually there is one more class for whom trolling is good: Bitcoin sharks that prey on meek or emotional trolls. Sharks are very polite to trolls, learn about how to herd them and learn how to market to them. Then they just rip their faces off (financially speaking). Either in one single rip (like Pirate@40) or in a gentle, but close to the bone, shave (like Meni Rosenfeld).

With this regard this forum is no different than the majority of financial and investment forums. In fact I always thought that this was always the purpose of the free-speech policy of the forum: a steady supply of people who will willingly take the losing side of the trade.

Its just business, nothing personal.

Free speech,  yes... (although this isn't a government run forum, so free speech laws don't apply)

- I see a useless post mentioning BFL,
- I press report to moderator
- That subforum's moderator deletes the crap
- Piss of a moderator too much with off-topic replies, and you are toast.

Now this goes for whole off-subforum-topic threads too.

However, out-and-out trolling in that particular thread was tolerated far too long.

I concur.

We absolutely need more rules and restrictions in this free speech forum on a free market economy. No longer shall the forums be unbound by morality, ethics and law. I propose an oversight committee to draft up a clear ruleset on what shall and shall not be allowed to be posted. Also the establishment of a policing force to enforce adherence to the rule set and a justice system to dole out punishment for infractions. We could finance it by a small voluntary mandatory fee.

Hell yeah ... Smiley

How about the good old "I don't give a crap" or "read, laugh and forget" rules?

Or one clould simply learn which person he can trust not to be a troll...

The question remains the same:
Who decides what's spam and what's not?

You, inaba, bfl, the community, mods or ..

What if you get accused of spamming simply because someone gets wet eyes over your comment:/?

Subforum: scam accusations -> ASIC

Post a single troll anywhere else and your account is in the penalty box. I also am very tired of this immature crap spewed all over the forum from people who have no preorder themselves. Either wait or cancel your preorder.

BFL has a bad reputation (made by them self!) and that's a magnet for trolls. They have to live with that!
To hell with BFL—  the gibbering insults, off-topic ranting, and random inanity are harmful and embarrassing to our whole community no matter who they're directed at or who they're coming from. <...snip...>

For those of us who think BFL is a bunch of scam artists: the trolling is bad because the serious criticism is lost in the noise and made to look like just more of the insanity... for those of us who think BFL is an honest business being treated like crap the trolling is bad: it's insanely disrespectful would easily make someone think twice about doing business with the Bitcoin community. For those of us who don't care about any of this but want to pretend that we're mature and intelligent people: The trolling is bad— it makes us look like unruly children.
Businesses run off of an open internet forum is what makes this look childish. The trolls just follow.

To hell with BFL—  the gibbering insults, off-topic ranting, and random inanity are harmful and embarrassing to our whole community no matter who they're directed at or who they're coming from. The trolling makes it hard for people who have money extended to BFL to track whats going on and sort out the BS from the serious concerns. I'm not suggesting this at their request, in fact I'm suggesting doing what I offered to do that Inaba didn't agree with. (A blunt splitting clean sweep instead of a bunch of laborious manual message moderation).

The only people the trolling is good for is those who like setting stuff on fire— not because the stuff is good or bad— but just because they want to watch the world burn.

Who "deserves" what doesn't even come into it. Civil society isn't about picking winners and losers and treating everyone you dislike like shit. If your opinion of BFL's reputation is negative— don't buy their products and encourage your friends to do the same. Let them know what they're doing wrong.  There is nothing wrong with being frank, and nothing about it requires hostility, dishonesty, childishness, or disrespect.

Lots of stuff gets moved, deleted, etc on the forum.  Hopefully it's done with consideration and care— and if not then hopefully the users will find a better forum.  This kind of care isn't required to avoid censorship— it's required because its part of what differentiates a good forum from a bad one. But what of censorship? Freedom of speech is as much about the freedom to NOT say what you don't want to say as it is about the freedom to say what you want.  Censorship would be denying the forum the ability to self regulate— to force it to distribute and promote your views even when it is to the detriment of the owners of the system and the community that uses it.

@gmaxwell:

What's spam and what's valid information? Who decides that; inaba, BFL or you?  I hope not ....
He asking you to clean the thread could be considered a form of censorship ....

It would be harmful to the forum and community.

the simple weight of how many trollish people clicked "LOL DONGS" just goes to show that it needs to be split. This is rediculos, The BFL offical forum has more FUD and trollbanter than actual information of any value.

No I think i goes to show that BFL has "no information of any value"

Also i like how you decided to manipulate the results to suit your agenda

"They all voted no goes to show they meant yes" go back to communist china where u belong...  Cheesy

We all voted "LOL Dongs" which means "LOL Dongs" or the alternative "Dongs LOL".... its science...
