This is sad to hear and shows once again how poor the average person's computer security is.  Multisig and hardware wallets are really needed.

Totally agree.  The few people that I know personally who own bitcoin are not savvy enough or aware enough to do these things (most of my coins are in cold storage) despite my nagging.

This is one of the open source investigation resources I've used many years ago.  Some of them are pay-wall, but most are not.  I've got a book of stuff like this to help.  I've used this to help resolve a lot of cases.  There is truth in the fact that a good detective never has to leave the desk.  However, people skills diminish rapidly.

Damn, anyway to tag his address as scammer on blockchain?  I tried to write message but blockchain is not showing it in transaction.
I was trying to link this thread

U might consider to contact PIUK (https://bitcointalksearch.org/user/piuk-17928) ...he may help. By the way, u seemed to have left some coins to the scammer's address...

No, but if I can get confirmation on the dox that I have, I'll be contacting the police.

I'm happy that this forum can put great effort to help the victim.

Once in a while we need one less trolling thread.

Danny, just PM'd you the Dox.

Maybe you can use it to coax a return of
funds before you publicize it.

If you consider this as fulfilling the bounty,
you may donate the .5 BTC to the victim.

Thank you.  The victim will certainly appreciate your generosity if this dox turns out to be valid.

I have registered on hackforums, and am currently participating in a discussion there to try and get this resolved.  I'll let you know if this dox information provides the necessary leverage to obtain a satisfactory resolution.

It appears that he's owned the domain bancoestadocl.info and used it to host a phishing site in 2012.

There's also a youtube account with the same username, but that's all I could see in common between them. It may or may not relate to the scammer.

real name may be: Mario Perez

seems we can get more information from spokeo for just $4.
I'll volunteer 0.01 BTC if you want to follow that  Grin

That's $4 per month for a 6 month contract.  The fine print says:

Quote
I understand that I will be billed $23.70 every 6 months until this subscription is canceled.

I'm tempted to pay it, but I'm a bit concerned that after I do I'll find no useful information.  Don't really want to be scammed in the attempt to track down a scammer.

You would need to subpoena hackforums.net to fork over the IP of that user.  Hopefully, that user was dumb enuf to use his real IP instead of going thru Tor.  Just like he was dumb enuf to use the same bitcoin address, something Satoshi himself advocated against doing to avoid tracking.

I understand that a subpoena to hackforums would be one option.  I don't think I've got enough evidence at this point for a subpoena to be issued.  I'm hoping instead that the user made other mistakes that will allow him to be identified.

This is sad to hear and shows once again how poor the average person's computer security is.  Multisig and hardware wallets are really needed.

If you are accepting donations on behalf of your customer, post an address and I'll donate a small amount (I feel I "owe" something to the karma gods as I've never lost a single satoshi knock on wood).

I don't want to set a precedent of making it seem like anytime someone loses their bitcoins, they can just come here and tell a sob story to get more bitcoins.

The idea of donations is certainly appreciated, and if anyone wants to send me a PM and make a private donation I'll put it all on a paper wallet and give it to the guy the next time we get together (since I no longer trust his ability to secure his bitcoin wallet).

Public panhandling for donations will just encourage scammers and con artists to try the same.  If we can get this guys bitcoins back, or can ID the thief that would be preferred.

Yes, I completely agree it sets a bad precedent.  I offered it because I know you are telling the truth and I feel bad for your customer, but your point is well taken and I probably should have PM'd you instead.

I'm offering a 0.5 BTC reward for anyone that can get me a legal name and valid home address on hackforums.net user "themad2403".

I will work the the best of my ability to get theft charges filed against him.  I realize it's a longshot, and even if I get the DOX, any attempt to file legal charges will likely fail, but I'll make every attempt I can.
