ANNOUNCEMENT:
Quick update for anyone interested and using GenTarkin's MOD (my firmware)...

Ive tested knc 2.0.2 firmware and implemented it into my firmware as a free addon package.
Changes include -
new BFGMiner 5.4.2 from KNC for the Titan
an updated version of waas utility
I changed my licensing info a bit

Ive already sent out emails to my customer w/ the information.

Chips would be the key. To be honest their implosion power design and using off the shelf supplies with brains was probably one of the best ideas ever. Those supplies aren't that bad.

Likewise their carrier chip is not a bad idea: It's rigid enough to hold the dies well, and with a proper heat sink on the top and non-insane overclocking it drops the heat pretty well out of the top of the die. No shortage of hash powr (the .7v) down there either.

They just cheaped the hell out on the clocks, sensors, and supporting circuitry. I would love to see a nice temp probe in the center of that chip, or one in the center and one at each edge. That would allow control and a safe power down of the chip if the temp spikes.

But I would never design a miner. They all have a life span measured in months, and to be honest if you only have to have it survive 6 months designing anything better is a total waste of money. If you slow it down a bit to save parts, people will buy someone else's chinese rocket crap. Fair enough. The Titans are probably the first and only miner that has lasted for well over a year now and is still profitable. How could they have known that every other Scrypt maker would go tits up?

I thought the same in that from a manufacturing standpoint it doesnt make financial sense to make a real quality miner simply because it will only run for months before its trashed. Maybe if they made one design and were able to update it to use newer chips (like a motherboard accepting different model CPUs) as they come out or something.Then you just trash the actual ASIC chip rather than the whole miner ever few months.

Ive also lowered the clocks on my titan to 275mhz on all dies based on your recommendations. It also helps me with the spring/summer heat and gives a slightly better mh/watt ratio - so its win win win.

That is so cool! I wonder if it can fix a titan with a mumbling die.

Describe mumbling....
The die pulls power, but throws errors from time to time on the die that shuts down either the die or the die next to it as well. Fixed by cycling the miner, but then it comes back. Sometimes you see the current on the supplies drop to zero.

I don't have a unit now that does this, but did awhile back.

Other annoyances include dies that hash fine for awhile, then the supplies drop to zero. Rebooting the cube fixes it, sometimes dropping the supplies to zero does so as well. Also an odd one, I had a unit that once had a power supply simply disappear. Because I was running it at 200mhz the other supply handled the load fine but it was odd.

These are the days of our lives. :-)

If its not due to a hardware failure then this is one of the things my firmware has automated from day 1 - handling "sleeping dies" or as you put it "mumbling dies"

@GenTarkin I have one question on faulty dies as well, namely 2 dies demonstrated effect that at times the PSU shutoff (apparently by its internal protection) and as this begun to happen quite often (and KNC/Keith naturally stated that everything is just in perfect order...) I've shut them off completely about a year ago. Now it happened some days ago that I've been checking another die as it started to go bypassed and have enabled both offline dies out of curiousity whether they would function under your 0.99e firmware. Nor sure if it matters, but I've set by mistake voltage to 0.0366 instead of -0,0366 although quickly corrected it to default values, then shut down the whole rig, powered on but the PSU to which that cube was attached didn't power on at all. Atfer some testing I've found out that whenever I plug that cube into any of the rest of PSUs (all the same type), the PSU doesn't power on. On the one that raspberry PI is attached, I've seen for a fraction of second a light blink so I'm guessing the dies are causing short circuit. Is there a way to get this cube online if just to shut those two dies off again? Running since yesterday 1.0.4 firmware & waiting for self tuning to finish...

UPDATE 1: Thanks for reply via the link above @GenTarkin (The dies are fried, and needs to be repaired, ready to go in about 2 months).
UPDATE 2: Self tuning complete, power usage down by ~15%, DCDC temp from ~72 to ~58°C @300MHz [thumbs up]

As to how I would improve them:

1) Optoisolators on all signal inputs: Protects the cube against static electricity, plugs loose, ground loops, general fuckage, plugging in backwards, etc.

2) Drivers from the FPGA. You should never power signal lines directly off the output of a small FPGA. Drivers are small, cheap, and save the FPGA.

3) Two power plugs, opposite sides of the cube. Because why not?

4) Power the cube's hotel circuits and SPI lines from an on-board dc-dc charge pump. Simple as hell and you're not powering the thing from a little TPS cube on the controller. Did I mention no more ground faults?

5) Put in 0 ohm jumpers to allow you to isolate a bad die. Then you can build, test, and sell cubes with 75%, 50% dies for whatever. Looking at a dremel to cut signal lines is no way to go through life son....

would it be possible to make actually take over where they left off, as in copy everything and make it less shit?

How come knc didn't put 6 connectors on all controller boards? It would take the pick and place a matter of seconds and the components only cost pennies. Because knc are cheap bastards.
How come knc shipped $7000 rigs in pathetic single walled cardboard boxes at the beginning of October (until we screamed at them so much they got better ones)? Because knc are cheap bastards.
How come knc switched from UPS to fedex in October? Because they wanted to blame the shipping company for any damage to the rigs (de-ja-vu anyone??), damage which they could claim they are not responsible for. Because knc are cheap bastards.

Why did KNC not fix all rigs that had die0 boards immediately last year, now that we know it would have cost them very little? Because knc are cheap bastards, who don't give a damn about their customers - only about getting their greedy hands on customers money.
Why did KNC force so many customers over the last year to return faulty goods at the customers own expense, breaking their own T&C's? And ask them to commit fraud by writing down the cost of the rig etc to some nominal value? Because knc are cheap bastards.
How come knc shipped the Frankenjups in a cheap, plain box which doesn't even indicate which side is UP?! And blame UPS for mishandling it?! Because knc are cheap bastards.
Why did knc switch to a coolermaster heatsink for the frankenjup, which does not have a metal plate to bolt it down like the more expensive arctic i30? Because knc are cheap bastards.

Titan is still the most profitable miner available. Has been for almost a couple years.

All those S9 hopefuls over on the S9 ANN thread need a significant improvement in BTC value or a significant decrease in the diff to break even. Hope springs eternal.

The relationship between LTC and BTC is very interesting. LTC looks to be pumping over the last week or so and probably (IMO) headed higher, plus the LTC network difficulty is crashing right now.

I would conjecture that there may be some movement in CNY into LTC from BTC because of apprehension about what will happen to BTC value and/or the BTC network after the halving.

LTC mining looks set to become more profitable.
