I feel all of your pain having lost what was then an sizable portion of my funds in the CoinEx.PW scam.
The alarm bells have been sounding both here and on exchanges to get out of Cryptsy, so I did, even as a precaution and come back later.

I agree, starting a crowdfund to get listed on Bittrex may be the way to go
Everyone who chipped in votes and or coins to get SXC get listed on Bleutrade should have been given a full refund when they pulled the pin on its listing with them.
Not sure what happened with Bleutrade, getting sxc listed on Bittrex though would be quite different as they tend to only remove coins with low trade volume.

Has anything like this happened before? A large exchange going down taking coins with it? Sorry I am relatively new to bit and altcoins.

Get your altcoins out of Cryptsy, now! Withdrawals are already not working for 10+ biggest altcoins trade-volume-wise. Nor Bitcoin. If you fail to react to current situation you might lose double because not only you might lose your altcoins but Cryptsy demise might result in altcoin available total supply dropping massively hence price increase due to all lost coins.
Interesting what you said about Cryptsy demise resulting in altcoin supply drop...do you have any idea how significant it could be. Any particular alt coins it would happen to most? I am seriously surprised people still have coins in there. There have been countless warnings on this forum.
