A Shanghai man was sentenced to prison for kidnapping his own granddaughter so he could maintain his gambling addiction with the ransom money.

The kidnapping — orchestrated by a 65-year-old man identified only by his surname, Yuan — was first reported by the Shanghai Law and Rule Journal. The legal news outlet didn't specify when the incident occurred but wrote on April 18 that Yuan had just started serving his prison sentence.

Yuan kicked off his plan by picking up his four-year-old granddaughter from her kindergarten and taking her out to eat and shop without her mother's knowledge, the Journal reported.

[2] https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/grandpa-in-china-kidnaps-own-granddaughter-demands-ransom-so-he-can-continue-gambling

many gambling addicts have lost their minds because their desire to continue gambling overpowers their common sense, hence the importance of "gambling responsibly"

Quote
There are three licensing objectives which support the whole basis of gambling regulation:

- that crime should be kept out of gambling
- it should be conducted in a fair and open way
- children and other vulnerable persons should be protected from harm or exploitation from gambling.

IMO this man's case Is different and I won't blame any addiction for such low thinking, how would he kidnap his own granddaughter to get ransome to gamble that's the most absurd ive heard of.

Addiction can most times push people to the lowest of character and often make them do the most insane things especially when they let the addiction do the thinking for them. I usually thought drug addiction was the worst but now I know all addiction are the same.

Addiction is a very difficult thing to comprehend for those that have never experimented, as the addicted takes actions that go against their own interests, but their mind is so warped and their priorities so out of place they cannot understand their lives without gambling anymore, which makes them to sacrifice everything for it, a huge mistake as one day they will realize what they have done, and they may try to get their life back on track and they may find themselves alone without anyone willing to help them out.
It's get way worse of actually the addicted person decides to keep a secret because that only feeds the addiction to a level that is way above treatment and when reaching that stage, selling and loaning off self property can be the main results because he or she will be deeply associated that whatever means it takes to make money the person would try it and do it.
Once an addiction has reached that level it is very difficult for them to keep the secret, as even if they try, people will begin to notice they are always short on money and they seem be losing the assets they had, so even if at that point their family and friends still not suspect there is a gambling addiction going on, at least they will know you are going through some hard times, and they will begin to ask questions about what is happening to you that is causing those monetary losses.

Exactly, simply put the name of the ugliness over time will definitely smell too, or the point is that over time there will be some people who really feel suspicious of what is really happening to you, back again that I think we all already know how bad the impact can be caused when someone has entered the stage of addiction which is certainly they will experience problems in finance, usually the closest people know when we get our paychecks from work and when you can't pay some bills like electricity or water then surely your closest people including your family or wife will ask you about where your salary money is, makes sense right? of course and this is where it usually all comes out and over time they will pressure you to admit where the money went and there is no other way but for you to admit it. I think this is a scenario that is bound to happen over time when you become an addict and live close to family, because I also have one friend who experienced this scenario.

~ Celebrate each such day like a victory, because indeed it's a victory over your weakness. Be strong.
This is positive thinking and the percentage for success from gambling addiction or gambling debt will definitely be quite large

I am sure there are many people who are actually trapped, they fail to get out of their gambling addiction tendencies and are even unable to get out of their gambling debt tendencies, this is something what is worrying, they seem to lack guidance and motivation to get out of it all, support from the closest family is very important for those who are in the addiction phase

Right, in my opinion they lack guidance in the first place. It shouldn't necessarily be a grand guru or high-paid shrink, it can be anyone, your auntie, your girlfriend, your lecturer at uni, or just someone you accidentally met on an internet forum, it doesn't really matter who are them, what matters is their ability to tell you something that will make you motivated to stay away from gambling addiction and from any harmful addiction, because you don't want to be a slave of your addiction.

Yes, but it's a good reminder that even if you don't have anyone to help you, you can still be able to help yourself.

Just one day at a time.

Just for one day, just today, do the right thing.

That's it, it's just today, don't worry about tomorrow. Most people should be able to take care of one day. Just do the same thing again tomorrow.

Exactly, if you can do that then you just need to imitate what you just did a day before then continue to keep that mindset to keep you away from gambling, though it's going to depends from how a person take it seriously, as we know that when a person already addicted and have that money to gamble, it will be tough for him to stop himself from keeping away, adrenaline and that toxic inside the brain that will push him to play back and keep losing his money.

Once you become addicted to gambling it is very difficult to get out of it. Gambling addicts are so crazy that anything good they think is bad they will only run towards gambling. When gambling can't keep itself away from the urge it is considered a mental disorder. At this stage even if a person loses everything for gambling he cannot give up gambling addiction. And when this addiction reaches extremes it wreaks havoc in people's lives.

yes, you are right
when someone is addicted it's not as simple as thinking "oh just stop it"
sometimes the person really wants to stop a habit but depending on the level it is on their body and minds they simply can't
it's stronger than them
it must be fight slowly or all at once...

human behavior is something crazy sometimes.

Inevitable truth it speak volume in my heart as an eye witness of someone who was fully addicted gambling and drug he try all means to forcefully stop but couldn't do it, but need step down the process gradually for instance one who stay all through in gambling game one full day can only start to step down by spending few hours same to drug addict can limit the taken until you override the emotion.

An addict can still think like a normal person, they don't experience madness where their mind is disturbed and they can't think like normal people in general, so it's true that their thoughts are distorted but they can still think like an ordinary person so the one who can control it is their own mind, even people Even if you are crazy, you can be cured with brain therapy and given the right treatment, so gambling addicts are the same, even though they have difficulties and have lost their direction, they can still think, unlike people who have mental disorders. A person who is addicted to gambling has an excessive passion for the gambling they play because of the pressure they often experience losing so that their ambition to win makes them uncontrollable.

But that doesn't mean that a gambling addict has to experience bad luck continuously. He needs help. Even though addicts are a little stubborn, their minds are disturbed and maybe only a rehabilitation center can handle their chronic addiction, so even though they are currently living a difficult life. One day if they recovered, he will realize and perhaps avoid the gambling that caused his life to be ruined.

You ultimately have control of your actions.

It can be a difficult day, or week, month, or year, etc, but at the end of the day it is simply one day at a time.

You can get out of a bad situation, one day at a time. It just takes time, but if you keep advancing every day, you eventually will get better.

I agree with this, absolutely. If you are addicted to gambling, you have to decide to make one step at a time in the direction of freeing yourself from the addiction. You just have to start from something. For example, if you were accustomed to borrowing money for your gambling, say to yourself "I will never do that again!". And then start counting days that have passed without you borrowing money. Celebrate each such day like a victory, because indeed it's a victory over your weakness. Be strong.

If I were the one experiencing a gambling addiction, it seems like I would also choose to keep the addiction problem a secret. Because the important thing is that other people know the problems I am facing. However, that doesn't mean I take the problem of gambling addiction lightly, but rather to prevent other people's negative views of me. because people who are addicted to gambling are often seen as bad by many people, considered trash and useless, so people who are addicted to gambling often lose the trust of other people. That's for where I live, but I don't know if it's the same where you live, where gambling addicts are often seen as bad and looked down upon. But if we really need help from other people, then never hesitate to ask for help from other people.

But don't let that happen, because being able to recover from gambling addiction is an easy thing to overcome. And because of that, I always try to keep gambling with full awareness, always trying to control gambling activities as best as possible. Because prevention is better than cure.

The bigger mistake is a family that leaves their addicted ward alone to suffer because of his countervailing attitudes. Such thoughts affects more the addicted player in a way that doesn't seem right. It's right for people to focus more in reviving the addicted players. And let them realize they are not heading to the right lifestyle for them. However, correcting an addicted brain is quite very hard, and so tiring that the addict's family at some point would want to let go of him. I don't buy such an idea in cases that has to do with mental illness. As I read above they're not performing those behaviors at their own will. It's just a quick reminder that addicts actually needs help, regardless of their behavior. If left alone, he'd cause more disturbing problem for the family.

The earlier an addicted player is attended to, the healing process begins. Hence whatever treatment method in form of kindness that is utilized will be effective. Engaging in arguments with the addicts only makes them sad and through anger can do something wrong in their process of proving to his family that gambling will surely get him rich. They could sell or steal meaningful treasures from their home and wager in the casino. Actually, due to the stigma an addict feels people have on him, he'd do anything possible to win big, just to remove the stigma. So, those stigmas, hatred and argument placed on addicts is not the right thing doing. It worsens the struggle to save the person.

you are right, that is sad
when we have a support network and people to talk to everything is better, unfortunately that is not the situation of most people in this world so if we are fortunate enough to have a support network we should be thankful for that

some people would rather sink than ask for help, it is quite crazy...

There are usually underlying issues with gamblers, and the gambling casinos simply offer a way out of their troubles.

It's a temporary fix to a more long term issue. And the thing is that gambling can of course make these initial troubles even larger.

The key thing is to remember to keep things under control, because you might end up in a worse position trying to fix your issues.

It is similar with any other addiction, like alcohol for example.
I was looking out for the temporal solution provided by the gambling platform as you’ve referred but, you apparently didn’t suggest any. I don’t think any gambling platform would suggest anything aside from its T&C. It’s T&C like,

Not having to play repeated games,
a legal registration age grade and
Possibly, having minimum and maximum stakes per game

Is where they often draw the line and at times, it helps gamblers. Especially those who gamble large amounts but, these are gamblers who don’t really care much about the losses.

For most, you just ensure your not gambling above your limits and not always.

As you have said, the casinos will not be found responsible for the way we gambles or all the challenges we face at the cause, all they are after is on our strict compliance on their terms and conditions, they are there to make their money and could encourage any means to see that gamblers are involved in the use of their platform all the time, regardless of how it may have cost them, gamblers are the ones that should be responsible for themselves on how they gambles, plan ahead for themselves and also make the right decision of what is good for them.

facts
it's a better world where we are responsible for our actions
but also would be good to have warns on casinos and ways for people to protect from themselves if they start to get addicted like freezing their own accounts, easy way to put time limits, I don't know
things like that...

When people become addicted to gambling, they no longer think about themselves because they will only think about gambling. Losing money will just be normal for them, and they don't consider it something big.
Those who are addicted to gambling may start to annoy other people by starting to lose their temper, changing habits and making people around them wonder. It is difficult to pull them out of gambling because they have become addicted to gambling.
That's why when playing gambling, we have to be able to control ourselves well so we don't experience these problems.
I think that those who are addicted to chronic gambling turn into psychopaths, they start robbing, stealing, manipulating, they really can't feel the pain of the person who is the victim

I once read in an article, several rich families in a country advised their families who were addicted to gambling to undergo brain surgery, the aim was to change their behavior to become empathetic again like other normal humans

Gambling addiction is not just something that is normal, there is a spirit that controls it,and that spirit can not just be seen with the ordinary phisical eye, if you are spiritually inclined, then you can see that addiction is something that has been set up for man to become victim of and remain in pain and bondage of it.If you can see, everything that one tend to be addicted to always has negative impact on person. It has been designed to destroy man, that is why you can seen one sell his only land just to gamble, and after losing,he will feel like commiting suicide.
Gambling addiction is something that we must avoids and we already have the way to avoids it. But many people forget to take care themselves while they playing gambling so that's why many people still lose much money. That doesn't makes them realizes about their mistakes but still trying to keeps playing gambling without take a rest. When they lose, their tension will becomes high and makes them angry and will trying to continue their gambling activity without trying to introspect what they have done. But if they can reduce their lose by always limiting their money and time, they will see that they can still enjoy the gambling games and avoids the big lose. They can also have a chance to reduce their gambling addiction using that way but unfortunately, if someone is gets addiction in gambling, they will not realizes about that.
