I wouldn't worry about occasionally/accidentally meriting what later turns out to be a plagiarized or otherwise unworthy post.
Yeah, though I would suggest that anyone--not just merit sources--check to see if a post is plagiarized before meriting it, especially if it's being made by a newbie and looks like it was written in a "professional" style.  That might sound like prejudice against newbies...and that's because it is.  It's unfortunate, but the vast majority of lower-ranked accounts are non-English speakers trying to write stuff in English in order to get paid for bounties, and there have been so many examples of them resorting to plagiarism that it's almost the norm at this point.

Avoid sending merits to friends just because they asked. It's fine if it's an otherwise merit-worthy post but the fact of asking should invoke some healthy skepticism.
Agree, and this is the reason why I don't send merits exclusively to you and most of the members of DT1.  Even though the best posts tend to come from that list of members, I don't want my merit-giving behavior to give even the appearance of being a political thing.

The thing is, merit sources are under more scrutiny than the average bitcointalk member, and you definitely don't want to hand out merits to friends, alts, or for any reason other than rewarding a good post.  Oh, and I'm not sure why Cryptopreneurbrainboss can't be a merit source along with TK808.  I think the altcoin sections need multiple merit sources out on patrol.

Yeah, I'm pretty adamant and aware about puppets (i can spot them pretty easily) and increasingly those who attempt to manipulate the system (plagiarism, merit sharing and etc) for account farming/bounties (essentially, nurturing an account to gain more weight).

Secondly, yeah i was hesitant on giving him merit to begin with; really a one-off event. The vast majority of my merit went to real credible users (feel free to dig through the history, I'm sure many have already). Giving merit to friends and interests, ie boosting their status, is something I obviously won't do, the last thing I want is negative trust on my BTT profile for betraying everyone's trust in me.

To Theymos: I know you're watching and waiting to see the community members dig into all these candidates who want msource status, I'm pretty sure you'll be considering this application specifically, but as many stated there is little risk in promoting merit sources since they are in the public view and will be scrutinized. Promoting individuals like Cryptopreneurbrainboss is something i do recommend, there's no way one person can significantly affect the outcome of these sections that are larger and much more difficult to navigate than the Bitcoin sections.

I remember Nevra very well, and your point is valid. However there is a difference between getting involved in a project with a legit account, and an account that is obviously created to compulsively spam one liners regarding one project in various threads. I am honestly baffled he hasn't been nuked.

1- Helping out a friend is perfectly fine now and then if they put in some effort Smiley

2- You are right, I guess we are just not looking for the same content.

3- as you say, mistakes happen, to everyone.

I wish you good luck Smiley

See you around!

Hey Asche, been a while man. I remember your involvement with Nevra, when your account was a month old or so, and received some of your first merits from that https://bpip.org/smerit.aspx?to=asche. I'm pretty impressed overall by how active you've been. You were offering to translate the thread into French and were quite involved soon after. The entire point here is not to call you out for previous activities, but to show something a bit deeper, that just because someone is a noob promoting something or willing to gain something, doesn't necessarily mean they have bad intent. Some of these guys are genuinely interested in crypto and etc, and to recognize specific individuals for their contributions, even though they may be driven by monetary incentives, sometimes helps the forums move forward and broaden those noobs outlook. In an ironic sense, I've had a direct impact on your outlook with what was trying to be achieved with Nevra; either consciously or subconsciously.

I'm not perfect, nor will I be perfect. Granting merit on the basis of posts is completely subjective, even myself is not completely immune to certain things. I was granting a lot of merit recently because i know I'm kinda in the spotlight here and should be displaying my judgement and capabilities. Because of that, I was looking for posts the other day to merit, and will continue to do so as long as i have smerit available.

Disregarding all that,

1) The first post, he's a friend of mine. And with 1 smerit i had (btw this is the first smerit i had earned in like over 3-4 months and prior to all this attention i received), he was asking to merit his thread, so I did. He's a highly reputable guy and on a more fundamental level, translation services help strengthen the local community boards. I support all translators, because they directly impact the activity on those local boards. Even though they may be driven by monetary incentives (lets face it, most people are in crypto), doesn't necessarily discredit it. These things have direct or indirect impacts on the alts sections of Bitcointalk as a whole, in a mostly positive manner.

2) Altcoin stuff, he's sharing his wisdom. You don't have to agree with everything someone is saying to like it, or to understand underlining wisdom. He's not promoting a coin, but was trying to share his thoughts. I respect that, i agree with most of what was stated.

3) The last one, was a mistake. That post is actually a copy-cat of something similar i viewed (and was assisted by) 2 weeks earlier, which was also an advertisement (in a sense). This was the original post: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/publish0x-the-next-steemit-5118082 i was essentially thinking that that was the same post, when in fact the user copy-pasted what that topic/user wrote, changed it up to crowdholding and published it on its own. I immediately recognized the mistake after i gave that person merit for previous efforts. Publish0x is an interesting site, and yes that post did help me discover that website, in which i will be using for information. Merit ofc, on the basis of helping me, the entire premise of meriting someone is if you actually gained something of it, because you won't be the only one.

I do not really know what was the hype at present but I am seeing a lot of post regarding on the sudden change on awarding merit in the altcoin section. I know that market is bad and we should embrace more crypto enthusiasts to join in the forum so that they will be encourage to invest in cryptocurrency after knowing a lot of things in the system. This is base on thr experience that not all who join in thr forum were investors. Some are just bounty hunter gradually becoming an investors after knowing how it can be used purposively.

Awarding merits is just a little way to welcome especially the new comers. Anyway, they can't steal your rewards that much because a jr. member level doing signature campaign is just receiving a minimal rewards.

Corrections are not born without mistakes ,its the way of life ,don't run away from mistakes they are the only way to set a scattered puzzles right. I'm just here to share my own experience since a year in crypto space and readers please have it in mind that no one is perfect ,i like accepting my mistakes so as to move forward ,one step at a time so please correct me if I'm wrong in some areas

Newbies this are few ways you can select good coins and I'm going to set something apart and that is,make sure you do thorough research on a coin or token before investing ,its your responsibility and its a must

Be selective when picking coins and token ,like know different between total supplies, for example I've noticed that low max supply coins appreciate in price better than large supply ones and that doesn't mean that there are no large supply coins that surpass low supply ones but mostly I prefer lower max supply ones

If you are a upcoming newbie that has no cash and struggling to survive ,join airdrops and bounties ,they will help and if you select a coin of let's say 100million max supply ,its not a must to get 10,000 pieces of that coin because a friend of your got it ,3000 pieces is a better way to start , same goes to billion coins if its 100billion ,even with 10$ you would get more than 3000 pieces of the 100million coin e.g pundix

Always remember that a little drop of water will surely makes a mighty ocean ,step by step bit by bit you will get there ,I started with 200pieces of electroneum as cheap as it was when released but now I have 5000pieces ,I got helped through airdrops mostly and some few faucets too ,no matter how broke or penniless you are ,you have HOPE ,the day you stop trying is the day you become hopeless .

I don't see how these are really adding value.
First one is just some nobody offering a service nobody has reviewed yet in a self moderated thread, and the other one, it yet another post about how to make money on airdrop and bounties, both causing the forum a lot of harm.

Just found this gem

Hello everyone,

Recently I discovered this article about Crowdholding. It seems like a very good platform to earn some crypto as it's a little different to most bounty platforms. They seem to include bounties, but In addition to catering to the regular bounty hunters the site also has a second category called ‘co-creators’.

Anybody who joins the site can complete either type of task. Co-creators complete more varied tasks which are quite different from ordinary bounties. They can include things like reviewing a website, app, graphics or video, completing a survey to share your thought about a company or its products, or being creative and coming up with idea about how a business can improve its product or operations. These are just some examples, as there are many more things which could be posted as a co-creator task.

They have over 36k signups, 90+ startups on their platform and listed on CoinMarketCap. Is anyone using this platform and what do you think about it? I've joined up today and it seems like a good little platform that is a sleeping giant right now.

You do realize you merited an advertisment post?
All this user is doing is posting about this service. This is hardly doing the forum any good.

I can't in any way support you as a merit source considering your merit sent history.

It takes balls of steal to try and find good quality posts in ALT section, I trade ,miner , hold a lot of ALTs but i am rarely active there.

even the mining board which is "supposed" to be less spamy looks scary to me, i proposed to have more child boards there > https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.49198652 to organize the mess a bit , only then i will be able to chill around alts more often.

but as far as having to dig into all that spam and scam b.s, , it's easier to find a needle in a haystack, so i wish you luck ( you need it) and i support your application.

There are lies, damned lies and statistics. MTwain
Historically speaking, the main sections you aim to target (I haven’t got specific information on the chilboards such as Services) were not shy of awarded sMerits, although there has always been much speculation as to what went on behind the scenes there.

Nevertheless, it is irrefutable that those sections have lost weight in terms of share of received sMerits:

-   Altcoin Discussion Total: 11.886 (3,45% of all sMerits) -> since, 2019 up until the 22/03/2019 :   727 (1,33% of all sMerits)
-   Ann Altcoins Total:         34.127 (9,89% of all sMerits) -> since 2019, up until the 22/03/2019: 2.360 (4,31% of all sMerits)

Both boards have dropped their share my more than half in relation to the total awarded merits. Having forum members in the role of Merit Sources, with a good fair criteria, looking out for those boards is certainly welcome.

Yeah, I support this application as well.

Altcoin Discussion and the rest of the alt sections where actual discussion takes place need more merit sources, and I'm sure OP is well aware of this himself after finding out that it's near impossible to earn enough merits to rank up if you post primarily in those sections.  And he's a decent poster himself, so I'm confident he knows what good posts are vs. shitposts.  Hopefully if Theymos brings him on board as a merit source, OP won't waste his sMerits on garbage posts--my guess is that if the altcoin sections are all he reads, 99% of it is going to be crap.

Good luck, bro.

Altcoin section is just fucked up with lots of shit happing there daily with no human interest most probably bots and accounts farming. From all this shit it's pretty hard to find the posts which are worthy of merits but TK808 has done a great job in maintaining his interest in the altcoin section even after such bad criticisms of that boards by some of the members here.

As seen, TK808 is personally an victim of getting unnoticed even after making quality posts in altcoin section, he could understand the situation more clearly and would also be able to award merits in a effective manner as per I think. Also we need more merit sources in those sections for sure.

I would support this application from bottom of my altcoin heart! Roll Eyes

Sorry to interrupt your merit spree, tk808. Please be careful on sending merits, especially those who are a plagiarist.
A sample is user Favouredhart, the profile has been autobanned, the most likely reason for autobanned is plagiarism case. Make sure that you have given your smerit to non-alt of spammers or any plagiarist.

I'll run the profiles through the checker, if msource is something i do get awarded with. Aside from that, useful tool to aid me when checking for puppets.

I think this is a jolly good idea. Someone has to do it. Most merit heavy, or vaguely normal, people won't want to go anywhere near that section. It's basically incomprehensible these days. I'm sure there's some quality posting that never gets the credit it deserves somewhere in amongst all that racket.

Wow that was fast, maybe with you application and mine the alternative section will receive some attention from meriters. I'll suggest though you should follow the rules and qoute the original post to make it look more official.

Irrespective of we are both applying for the same course, I support you application as a win for one is win for all.  You have a solid background on the altcoin board and I believe you'll do a perfect job even better than me Wink
