Definitely it should be a hobby, otherwise if you are too serious with lottery, you'll be bankrupt easily.

Just imagine the bettors chance of winning, not even close to 1% and you are spending a lot of money when you bet, that's a suicide to be frank.
This kind of lottery is usually for charity, the word itself says you are only donating money, means you'll likely to lose, 99%. Grin

I personally know a lot of people who became bankrupt as a result of this hobby. And in one case I know of an individual who committed suicide after getting ruined as a result of lottery ticket purchases. And the chances of winning are no way near 1%. The best chance I know is for the Dubai Duty Free's Millennium Millionaire Scheme in which there is a limit of 5,000 tickets. So the probability of winning is 0.02%. For most of the other lotteries, the probability is like 1 in 10 million or less than that.

I've heard from some local news that the chance of winning a lottery is 1 out of 28,989,675.

That's the number of combination from 1-55 numbers, it's not an easy or same with the post above you, since it's for charity you are just giving away your money as the chance is really slim, though this girl or the couple gotlucky after 20 years of keeping the same number, now they are enjoying living a luxurious life.

Lottery in the end is just a type of gambling that requires super luck. There's less than one percent of someone winning. Comparing it to gambling dice/cards, I'd take the latter any other day tbh. The chances are just abyssmal, and to even think of winning? Nah. I'd reckon most just buy a ticket since it's quite cheap for most people, and even if they lost, no issue there, not like they would have expected to win anyway. I'm pretty sure no one enters the lottery thinking of him winning, it's just mostly for fun, or just a habit of sorts.

And also consistency. They were consistent in keeping the number until it had it hit after a very long year of waiting. We will never know even if someone becomes consistent for 20 years, there's no assurance that they'll be hitting the jackpot.
Maybe when they were betting on that number, they just made it as a hobby and didn't expect that it will hit someday until it finally did.

It will better if we can use the lottery game as a hobby and we buy the ticket occasionally and not trying to buy as that woman. We don't have to think about when we hit the jackpot because we never know the time, and we can buy it continuously. But it will be better to allocate some money, for example, $10-$20 monthly, and we never use more than that amount.

Perhaps, consistency and persistence will bring luck to us, so someday we can hit the jackpot by coincidentally. That will surprise us if we can hit it after we wait for a long time like that woman.

Thats a good question but the fact that she won the $60 million jackpot is huge enough to cover the amount she spent in gambling even for years. The good thing about this is all her effort and waiting (specially she has a specific numbers to play on) are paid off for having a good result. She is truly lucky and its really meant for her.

LOL... how much money she could have spent on lottery tickets in 20 years? It would look minuscule compared to the jackpot. I am not sure about the price for Lotto Max ticket, but the price of a Powerball ticket is around $3. If you play every day, then it means your expenses come to around $1,095 and that works out to $21,900 for 20 years. The jackpot is approximately 3000 times larger than that amount.

Yes, that is a big amount of money that she got.
However. how often she had been playing and how many times she won?
This may be very big and also very promising, but we don't know how much she had spent to join that gambling. That is why it seems so natural to know the amount. However, this is a really legit play game with very intermediate difficulty.

it took less than 10 years for him to use up all that money. The last time I heard, he had declared bankruptcy.

Its happened more then once but thats an impressive scale of loss, some of it will be corrupt practice or even theft from those billing in various ways.  Often I hear of sports stars who lose alot or all money to their accountant who files 2 books and the fraud is not discovered till there is no cash left.   This is a good point in favor of always supporting your community and family who should in turn benefit you over the course of your life, not everyone has this perspective but Im just talking about long term investment really not exactly charity.   So with 111m you can provide housing with a supportive policy while also gaining some income from the rental revenue, this does require alot more thinking and work then simply just spending.   Simplest policy I'd say is always repay debts first, including all future costs that is also a kind of debt to the future so max out pension etc.
Money is a strange thing not as simple as it seems, capitalism only works really because you cant ever exclude the constant circulation of capital in an economy  either productively or wastefully.   Get the lump sum but also buy an annuity and pension with this etc.   Or if you got no clue what that is do that get the regular sum is fairly easy to argue.

Yes I want to know that too, she got lucky to win that prize I hope it can really help in her daily lives, if I were her I will not gamble again my winning money, I will diversify it in another things or investment for me to make it grow, maybe soon when all her finances are stable she can gamble again, I wish I am lucky like her, I never win in any lottery that I joined I always got 2 or 3 digit only out of 6. Since then I barely play lottery again, just playing with tickets.

60 million is a huge amount of money, pretty sure everyone in her neighborhood would be seeing her as some sort of celebrity and that stauts can be retained depending on how she spends this huge amount of money. A lot of people in our country tend to dry up their winnings because they are not financially literate, hope this Toronto Winner is so she and her children's children get to enjoy her winnings too.

That is one of the problems. Once everyone know that she has won the lottery jackpot, they will lineup outside her house to beg. It will take some effort to ignore such people. Take the case of Jack Whittaker. In 2002, he won the largest jackpot till date from Powerball ($113.3 million after the taxes were deducted). But it took less than 10 years for him to use up all that money. The last time I heard, he had declared bankruptcy.
That is incredibly common and it is not difficult to see why, in order for a person to earn 60 million dollars that person needs to be shrewd and know about the ins and outs of their profession and know about how to minimize their taxes and about investments too, but a person that wins the lottery does not know anything about what it means to earn that money so they begin to make all kind of irresponsible decisions when it comes to their money and they end up bankrupt in just a few years despite all the money they won.

I have to disagree here. Since the draw is randomized to the maximum extent possible, no matter whatever number you chose, the chance of winning per draw remains the same. For example, let's say that there is 1 in 100 million chance of winning a jackpot. If you are buying tickets continuously for 25 draws, then there is a chance of 25 per 100 million that you will win the jackpot at least once. This probability (25 per 100 million) remains the same whether you are sticking with the same number or you are opting for 25 different combinations.
It's okay if you disagree but I'm not tackling the results per se. It's just that they've been consistently betting on their favorite number that they've been keeping for years.
But you're right about the draw and its randomness, whether you have a number that's being kept, that wouldn't change the chances.

If this is true, I could say that woman is so lucky. And lucky to those family who is closed to her were I am pretty sure
they will inherit for the winning price of the old woman, isn't that right? Before I remembered I also played lotto games and
most of the time I hit the 4 digits in 6/49 and it never happen to hit at least 5 digits.

It is very important how a person can manage their winnings. After all, there are many stories when a person wins a lot of money, but after a while he has nothing left. Because if a person does not know how to manage money, then they leave him as quickly as they came.
And to win the lottery is a great success and such luck does not just come to a person. May she be good at managing her wealth.  Smiley

I prefer to buy some gifts for people closest to me, but I will never tell them that I hit the jackpot and win big money.
I prefer to go to my bank and save all of the money in my bank account, and I only get some small amount for my daily life.
You sit on a cryptocurrency forum and dream of putting all your money in a bank account? WTF? What about buying Bitcoin for at least part of the funds or some other cryptocurrency?
He's one of the people who trust banks with all their money and expects that it will be forever be safe there. There's nothing wrong with it as most people really have that much trust on banks but with us who believes on crypto and know that bitcoin and other crypto is somehow alarming for banks then we might not be fully trusting banks for our money.
Anyway, the fact the he believes that he can hide his identity to any of their closest people is somehow ridiculous. You might even have a hard time hiding it to your neighborhood especially with how much the jackpot prize is.
Investment, Trading, Properties, Business is what you must remember when winning a jackpot prize such as that. Avoid leisure and buying unnecessary stuffs that might put all your winnings to waste and end up getting broke in the long run.

She and her husband took care of the number until it came out. I got no luck in the lottery and reading news like this, it's really once in a blue moon to win such amounts on it.
I've done many combinations but to no avail and I don't have that persistence and patience that this woman had shown. They just have to enjoy the money for the rest of their lives.

That is because of luck. If other people try what that woman does, I am not sure if they can also hit the jackpot in the future because that woman really has a big patient to use the same number for 20 years. It is hard to stick to one thing for a long time, but that woman proves to us that she can do it. I can't imagine how hard she does that thing and just waits without knowing if she can hit the jackpot someday.

They don't have to do anything besides enjoying the win money, and  I think they are now happy. Having persistence and patience will be important, but it is better to use them for the other jobs, to have a chance to make money.

Why? Is that strange to you?
I still save my money in a bank account and have a cryptocurrency investment, and I think that is not a big deal.
I do not put all of my money in a bank, but I also have it in crypto.
Besides that, I need fiat money to buy my daily needs because I can not use crypto to buy it. I know that it will be different in the other place to use crypto to buy their daily needs.
But that is what I did so far, and I always try to increase my crypto, especially bitcoin.
Oh, I am buying bitcoin too from some part of the funds.

I'd be more surprised if someone won that kind of money playing Keno (i.e. rapid play lottery) playing the same numbers one hundred or more times in a row. (The equivalent of twenty years, let's call it one thousand times in a row).

The cost to play are about the same, but there are far few bigger winners and lots more little wins.

Oh man, I think I've heard of that technique way back in my childhood days. When someone dreams of numbers, she/he has to bet it to the lottery or any form of gambling because it might really win. The woman took 20 years for it to wait and it happened.
It's a win to them and that's plenty of money that can have it for the rest of their entire retirement.

A huge amount of money coming from the trust with the lucky number that they've got. This really common with those who are betting with lottery, thinking that a lucky combo is just there.

SOme used birthdays of important people or certain dates of important events that happened to their life, but looking to this story, it's  a long 20 years of waiting.

But the outcome is surely enjoyable, winning that huge amount of money makes your life changed
forever.
