I'm contacting newegg to see if I can get a replacement.

That is the one main reason why I'm buying only from Amazon. You just return it and at the moment UPS scan your return lable - you got your money on credit card.

On the other side there are no RX 480 on Amazon yet

I also bought 4 RX 480s (4gb) Sapphire on Amazon. They are there at retail $199.99 but they add stock and sell real quick.

One of my RX 480s smells like it's burning or something. It also starts to hash 30% lower shortly after starting to mine.
id check to see if its not your pci-e slot..

also i repasted mine, and on one the machine or whatever they have missed the die and only half of it was covered with thermal paste.

I have been using the pci-e slot running my r9 280x the past two months and no problems. The burning smell doesn't come from the other RX 480s and hashrate is 30 or 40% lower. I'm contacting newegg to see if I can get a replacement.

I am all windows 7  .  So my advice is based on windows 7.

pull the r9 280  and run just the rx 480's

make sure you are using amd 16.7.1 drivers

use wattman  for tweaking  wattman is inside of amd settings.

I go real simple with wattman

I only set the fans and the power limits

the power limit setting is under the fan setting  I use -28%

I set fans for 2000 rpm-4000 rpm

temps at 80 max 60 target

so only 3 tweaks for each card.

i get 24mh for 1 card 47 mh for 2 cards

I get  275 watts for entire system  cards ram cpu ssd case fans,

my system pull 71 watts with no mining and 275 watts with 2 cards.

My windows 8.1 system won't detect my RX 480s. Anyone run into this problem? It shows them as Basic Microsoft Display adapters. I installed all drivers. Any solutions?
Only Win10 or Win7 so far.

Ok, I'm upgrading to win 10.

there is no reason windows 8.1 wont work.. did you download the new drivers?

That's known bug. No Win8 for RX480 so far...

hmm you would have thought they fixed it in the new drivers.

Very easy to undervolt and handle the RX480 only using the WATTMAN,no need for additional tools.

Set Voltage to Core and Memory BOOOOTH MANUAL,let memory default voltage 1000 and clock it to 2200.

Then set frequencty to -15% and lower power states last 4 to 980,this is lowest you will get in gpu-z reading too,if you set lower than this you will get 1.0375 in Gpu-z.

With these settings you should have 27-27.5 Mh/s and much lower power consumption and heat Wink

yes and if you also use your pc for gaming like i do, you can make a special profile for the miner program and set the settings there instead of the global settings..

it will switch to those settings when you start mining and switch back to default when you stop.

ill try this on my problem rig thanks

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Driver is 16.30 for Linux

Genoil 1.1.7

Doing 133-139 mh/s.  I'd say its doing about 22.5 or 23mh/s in Ubuntu 16.04 in stock mode.

on 6 x 480 (4gb models)

2 - XFX 4gb rx 480
4 - Sapphire 4gb rx 480

powered usb risers.   3 seperate power rails for every 2 video cards.
Just spent a few hours setting up Ubuntu...will do power and benchmark tests after I take a nap.
This is good to know. I'm trying to set up Ubuntu for the first time and my first attempt at dowloading the driver it did not detect the gpu, then I couldn't get Claymores software to run it.  Will reload the 16.30 driver and try Genoil 1.1.7 now.

yeah wattman  seems to be good enough..   At the moment I have  49mh at 270 watts for entire 2 card system.

take 40 watts off  for the pc  I am at 230 watts  for 49mh  that is really good.

there is only one window there is possibility for a bad airflow, you need to redirect everything from that window

but it is a nice room for mining indeed, you can stack there, a little farm

second  set  of windows
