Trump's victory over the Pope: Francis backs down over 'not Christian' claim as Vatican says it was not a 'personal attack' or attempt to influence presidential vote

The Vatican today executed a speedy climb-down in its feud with Donald Trump - handing the Republican White House hopeful a major political victory.

Pope Francis's suggestion that Trump was 'not Christian' because of his views on immigration was not a personal attack on the candidate, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said on Friday.

Lombardi told Vatican radio that the pope's comments, which were denounced by Trump, were simply an affirmation of his longstanding belief that migrants should be helped and welcomed rather than shut off behind walls.

He also leaned toward confirming Trump's contention that his statement that Trump was 'not a Christian' was based largely on 'what he was told' about the billionaire's position.

Trump said Thursday that he suspected the Mexican government had propagandized to the Pontiff about him, prompting the unusual condemnation from the leader of the world's Roman Catholics.

'This wasn't in any way a personal attack, nor an indication of who to vote for,' Lombardi said.

'The Pope has clearly said he didn't want to get involdved in the electoral campaign in the US, and also said that he said what he said on the basis of what he was told [about Trump], hence giving him the benefit of the doubt.'

It's not because he doesn't want to get involved in US election that he didn't clearly explained that wanting to exclude people is not Christian. Wink
not defending trump because the politicians and the Vatican are working together, but just to point out pope you are in no way Christian, popery is anti Christian.

This spokesman sounds like a beaten dog, which is understandable. They need to control this Pope character. Maybe Mr. Big intervened, who knows.

Pope has scored a self goal. He should have stayed away from politics. Imagine what would happen if Trump become the POTUS later this year. The multi-trillion dollar properties and businesses owned by the Roman Catholic church in the United States will be hit with additional taxes. The fund outflows to Vatican will be affected.

Pope Francis Suggests Donald Trump Is ‘Not Christian’

ABOARD THE PAPAL AIRLINER — Inserting himself into the Republican presidential race, Pope Francis on Wednesday suggested that Donald J. Trump “is not Christian” because of the harshness of his campaign promises to deport more immigrants and force Mexico to pay for a wall along the border.

“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” Francis said when a reporter asked him about Mr. Trump on the papal airliner as he returned to Rome after his six-day visit to Mexico.

The pope’s remarks came during a wide-ranging, midair news conference in which he also waded into the question of whether the Roman Catholic Church should grant an exception to its prohibitions on abortion and birth control in regions where the Zika virus is causing a public health emergency, including in much of Catholic-dominated Latin America.

Researchers say pregnant women are especially at risk, noting that the virus may be responsible for a spike in cases of microcephaly, a condition in which newborns have unusually small heads and brains.

Well, he´s in charge of a walled fortress within a city and there are no refugees there so what is he barking about? And is U.S. politics any business of his anyway. He´s a religious leader, supposedly an errand boy for the big guy in the sky. Are voices in his head telling him to meddle in politics? Maybe he thinks it´s Mr. Big. He wouldn´t be the first one to have conversations with himself, lunatic asylums have been full of that forever.

Well that's still a good thing to see that some guys still understand what being a Christian means xD

Well, for a Christian he doesn´t mention Christ or God much if you check that out. What´s next, is he going to recommend that Christians don´t vote for a candidate for the presidency of the United States? And which candidates are the suitable Christians. Hillary Clinton? Anything  Christian about her?

I don´t understand why the President of the U.S. doesn´t complain about this intolerable meddling in U.S. politics. This isn´t just some foreign wanker, it´s the freaking Pope. Millions of people consider him capable of being a bona fide representative of a supernatural being that runs the universe. So if he doesn´t like someone the Big Guy obviously doesn´t either. And consequently these entities, Pope and Boss, must be partial to someone else.
Well as Trump is a dumbass who kept saying Obama is a Muslim, I perfectly understand why he doesn't move a lot to defend Trump...

It doesn´t matter if somebody is a dumbass or whatever. It isn´t about that. It´s about this Pope character  which supposedly is in contact with supernatural beings and therefore super important in the eyes of millions of Americans that believe in such things - meddling with American politics.

He seems to have an opinion in regards to Trump but, did he say whether Trump was the best choice amongst the current field of "fine" POTUS candidates? I mean look how he handled the snakes at Fox, he's definitely got potential!

Whatever; he got an earful from somewhere it seems....

A spokesman for Pope Francis says the pontiff's statement that Donald Trump "is not Christian" was not a "personal attack" on the billionaire businessman and Republican presidential candidate.

"This wasn't, in any way, a personal attack or an indication on who to vote for," papal spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said on Vatican Radio, according to NBC News. "The Pope has clearly said he didn't want to get involved in the electoral campaign in the US and also said that he said what he said on the basis of what he was told [about Trump], hence giving him the benefit of the doubt."

Feel the Bern, feel the Concern. International concern? Yeah, I guess garbage media around the world is portraying Donald Trump as a crazy loon/rabid dog. I´m sure that what they hate most of all about him is the lack of political correctness. Now; that is a crisis.

NEWBERRY, S.C. (Reuters) - Pope Francis forcefully injected himself into the U.S. presidential campaign on Thursday, assailing Republican candidate Donald Trump's views on U.S. immigration as "not Christian" in a sign of growing international concern at the billionaire businessman's election prospects.  Grin
