The WO is just a special environment, where both good post as good memes and shared stuff can get merited, still its important to keep stuff like that in there and don't use it all over the forum.... The WO is a place where we can be a little bit human more I guess

Still good posts are not going unnoticed there but more often will get merited by WO-users, cause just like suchmoon says its to many pages to catch up if your not a daily user.

I try to mix my merit usage there and merit both good gif/meme usage as I merit good posts as I merit in support of good members to rank up a bit... Of course as I source I cannot only use my Smerits in one place and do go to other threads to send of-course ....

Though thats a hard job cause imo my source allocation is still to low, so sometimes posts will be missed cause we are just empty at that time 

Still a good post posted in the WO is always a win as its been read by many people and probably educate a lot of readers so keep them coming filippone

Yeah, some do long posts...and meme posters complains a lot about those long posts. Sort of inside joke.
This is totally uncorrelated to the (usually good) content of such long posts.

It has been my favorite thread since I came here in early 2014.  I am a little embarrassed to admit that I barely ventured out from that thread in my first couple years of forum membership.

Yeah, I agree that there is a bit of a lax merit sending practice in that thread, but if any member is actually interested in bitcoin discussion from largely a bitcoin maximalist perspective, there tends to be a decent amount of content there, too... albiet could take a decent amount of time to sort through some of the side topics, and some of the members tend to make long posts about bitcoin related matters there, too.   

How about minimum of 5 or 10 minutes between posts, which would help to exclude post bursters or bots having fake conversations with each other?

I would also exclude posts made on Off Topic and Archival. Maybe also exclude the marketplace boards? There are an awful lot of newbie accounts which only exist to post likely scams on the marketplace, and there are also a lot of sockpuppets created to give fake vouches to these scams.

Also exclude banned users as best you can.

Good points, thank you. I'll play around with it sometime next week probably and see what I get. I don't have info on which threads are locked but maybe I can find something else to filter off spam threads.

Perhaps having 90% of whatever arbitrary percentage of their posts on the first two pages of a thread? Your existing criteria would generate way too many spammers who pick a megathread in Gambling/Altcoin/Bitcoin Discussion, pick a random post to reply to and basically repeat the same points. Alternatively/additionally, exclude those who have posted in more than 7 locked threads in Gambling/Altcoin/Bitcoin Discussion since those are spam megathreads 90% of the time.

Only issue with the first part is that it would exclude people who post in various sports threads such as the Serie A discussion thread or EPL discussion thread which have valid reasons for being megathreads.

This thread is about improving merit distribution and not so much about individual reputations, so I believe Meta is the place for it but if mods want to move it that's fine.

Not sure which definition you're talking about. Users can request any filters they think would help them find good content. Sure there is some good content everywhere but when resources (time or sMerits) are limited you gotta choose where to spend them.

Speaking of which, I'm still trying to come up with criteria without relying on existing merits (improving on example #4 in the OP), i.e. finding the elusive never-merited good posters. Here is what I'm thinking:

• User who made at least 50 posts in the last 6 months (just to eliminate some throw-away accounts)
• Excluding posts on Bounties and Press boards (any other completely useless boards?)
• Excluding posts shorter than 100 characters (not sure about this one)
• Has to have quoted someone at least 10 times (to show engagement in discussions and not just drive-by spamming)
• Never received merits

Any other ideas?

It's just an example by suchmoon and doesn't really mean anything. If someone wants to find people who have never posted in Altcoin Discussion for whatever reason, then so be it.

I think that this definition "spam boards "  is bit harsh. I try to avoid some boards such as altcoin discussion by posting altcoin discussion topics in beginners and help for example, but I can't do that always. Even in spammy boards we can sometimes find good posts (like altcoin discussion and economics)

Certainly there are more quality boards such as those mentioned (technical support etc)
