Cryptsy is imploding.

I've taken my coins out and would suggest the same to anyone.

Better make sure you pick the right co-astronaut for the trip, just in case...

That one.  I pick that one.
Haha, I know right?
Too bad her character on "the newsroom" spouts a lot of nonsense about economics, otherwise I might have considered her as a candidate for the future Mrs. Spaceman  Wink .

I'm looking at this picture and all I can think is "why the F would we want to go there?"

This is the "Official OFFTOPIC thread" so here's my thought:

Because if for some unfortunate reason , something happens in THIS planet there will be the seed for the society to be rebuilt.

This would be great, and a huge advantage to the network and for security of exchanges and customers alike.

But will the exchanges do this?

It may be they already sell BTC they don't have.   These exchanges are not run by paragons of virtue!

Getting BTC-e, Stamp and Gox all doing this looks tough - UNLESS they are more afraid of security issues than being found out for what they are (potentially) hiding from the market.  It is possible on balance this is the case.

It would be a leap forward if it worked - but it will take the will and a lot of work.

EDITED to remove thoughts on how they could sell coins they don't actually have - no need to freak everyone out!
In order to get the ball rolling it's only necessary to get three sites to join the first pool. Once that happens, we've got a method for adding new members to the pool one at a time (up to the Bitcoin protocol maximum of 20).

So maybe you don't start with BTC-e, Stamp and Gox to begin with. Perhaps you convince LocalBitcoins, CampBX, and Coinfloor.

Then you make it a competitive disadvantage to not join the pool  by heavily emphasizing how much more secure deposits are in the exchanges that join a pool versus those who do not until the remaining exchanges either join up, or experience a run on the bank which reveals their insolvency.

i think planets like earth are a dime a dozen, and to think the human race is "Intelligent" is laughable!

Give me your bitcoins and go live with the monkeys then !

EDIT: unfortunately and for lack of a better example, we are what passes as Intelligent Life, which is not the same as saying we conduct ourselves in a smart way....

It's true but it won't be true forever. That's the issue. Human's can't continue on their unquenchable consumption of resources forever. And going to Mars isn't the answer for "more".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hG9JkagAeRo

It all really depends on the frame of reference.

Bare with me for one second:

So far, the most unique thing we know in the universe is Intelligent Life. So far, there's only us (though highly unlikely).

BUT while we have not found another Intelligent race, we have founds lots of other planets capable of supporting such life or even us.

Therefore, Intelligent life is scarcer than the resources that fuel us (Earth).

Now this becomes an economic problem, scarcity makes Intelligent life more valuable.

If you were given this simple choice:

Save the humans or save the earth ??

The logical route is of course to save the most scarce. Humans can go on without the Earth, and even expand to hundreds of Earth-like planets, which we have already mapped.

But losing Intelligent life.... that would be a real blow not easily fixed.

Ecologists will want to murder me for my conclusion:

In this frame of thought, Humans have the moral obligation to use all possible resources in order to secure the continuation of Intelligent life.

Apocalypto, I love that movie!

the wise man has a point...
but we made the decision of which path we'd walk long ago, when we killed this wize man along with the rest of them.
now we are clearly past the point of no return
the only thing that can save us now is a drive to experiment explore and expand.
