I'm looking at houses (before the boat) and since I basically want a field or a forest (or both) a septic tank is basically mandatory, when I have been told all my life that it's a nightmare...
Septic tanks are okay with tons of land ie 10 acres or more.
Built 2x over spec
and put enzymes in 1 or 2 times a month.
wells are also okay if there is a lot of land and if you have a large space in your home to filter the water.
i was gonna mention over speccing the tank we replaced ours 8 or 9 years ago and ours is specced for two extra non existent bedrooms (bedrooms seems to be part of the size calculation) and a garbage disposal (another part of the size calculations) which we dont currently have. also we were told by the installer to never use additives. a properly set up tank should not need additives.
our well water treatment system is pretty big, 3 bigass tanks almost as tall as i am (ph adjuster, softener, and carbon) plus hydrogen peroxide injection, plus reverse osmosis for drinking water. so yeah takes a lot of room. in the basement
also, if you have a water softener or other water treatment system, use a drywell for the backwash. i think thats code anyway but our installer sees backwash going to the septic in a lot of installs.
