This is not OK.
SSD's are a poor medium for long-term storage.
And more generally complex electronics such as PCs and their many multiple single points of failure is not something to be relied upon.

But whatever you choose, those 12/24 words still need secure storage.

So, why would anyone need or want a Ledger if almost anything it does can be done on any computer? Perceived security because it's a "hardware wallet" that's small and convenient? Small 10 inch or 13 inch laptops can do the same thing and more. (it's the "more" part that opens up a larger attack surface.)
Any old phone can do the same thing, take it offline (no sim, no wifi) and its a hardware wallet. Connect to PC with USB or turn on wifi to have hot wallet.

Harder to back up.

I find these pc's to be really good

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-OptiPlex-790-USFF-PC-Computer-i5-2500s-2-7GHz-4GB-No-HDD-No-OS/133609240209?

add 2 sticks of Samsung ram and a 2tb ssd.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/16GB-2x8GB-PC3L-12800s-DDR3-1600MHz-2Rx8-Non-ECC-Samsung-M471B1G73QH0-YK0/274616178500?

clone 2 backup hdds.
and have an extra pc

keep off line locate
the backup clones off site.

cost

2x69 = 138 for 2 pc's
3x98 = 296 for 3 ssd's
1x50 =  50 for 16gb ram

484 full price for secure setup.

if you have 24000 stored.    484 is pretty much a 1 time cost.

have a trezor for <1000
have an exchange for <2000

or 2 exchanges each under <1000

when you download the blockchain you are capped by your download speeds on your internet.

the units above will download the chain at about 90gb an hour so 4-5 hours one time download.

Good morning Bitcoinland.

Still bouncing up and down trying to get a solid run over $24k... currently $23566USD/$30300CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

C'mon Bitcoin. Let's see $25k by Xmas.

Why even bother with all that?

Just keep your keys in the medium of your choice... paper, steel, leather, whatever... encrypted , duplicated, and stashed in multiple locations.

No need for electronic contraptions.

Yeah it does work that way.

To be fair, the point of these hardware wallets is to sign the messages or transactions securely before being broadcast to the network. If you can properly secure and verify your computers, desktop, phone, laptop or whatever device you use is clean, then they serve the same purpose.

If your computer is compromised, whether you know it or not, the moment you connect it to the network, someone can and will steal your corns, redirecting the transaction to a different address or just outright leaking your private keys so they can do it later. (or instantly.)

To that end, I'm still not convinced to spend money to get one of them. I'm now leaning towards a Trezor, but I do fine with my own hardware. My "hardware wallets" are my freshly formatted refurbished air-gapped old ancient workstations / servers. Almost eternally quarantined.

Addicted to HoDLing!
I decided to write to Ledger (again) asap. This time i want ALL my data removed from ALL their databases under GDPR.
Of course, i will remind them, that refusing to do so is illegal in the EU and that i have to report it to the officials through my embassador/foreign affairs ministry.
In the meantime i'm gonna figure out the correct instance to turn to, which form and/or wording i have to use etc.

Good move. Please keep us posted on this. I'm also thinking of writing to those jokers, to formally request the complete deletion of everything they hold about me, under GDPR. Complete deletion. Those fucks! I hope they go bankrupt and be forced to pay heavy fines.

Use formal language and don't be impolite (don't swear, etc.), just cold and to the point. This will scare them even more.

Good luck! Will let you guys know what happens in my case too, I just need to find the time to write a proper email.

Hey, but we have a spray! It doesn't do anything and it can't even sting the eyes of the attacker, so it's literally like hitting them with whipped cream.

That's so clever! Legal, and seems to be able to do a good job at stunning the attacker, and also marking him for the authorities to locate.

I want one!

Scaramucci's Hedge Fund Buys $25 Million of Bitcoin, Cites Michael Saylor as Influence

Anthony Scaramucci's hedge fund has bought $25 million in Bitcoin. Scaramucci said that the recent push of institutional investment into Bitcoin influenced his decision.

In brief
  • Anthony Scaramucci's hedge fund has invested $25 million in Bitcoin.
  • The fund, which started trading today, shall open to the public early next month.

On a separate note: yesterday was the biggest day ever for Grayscale: they guzzled 12,000+ BTC on a single day, and they are closed for new investors...
