Don't say anything when your opinion is not sought after in a public place because you don't know who is who.
I feel like sharing this so that we can avoid some unnecessary problems in our lives.

If you wait for your opinion to be sought then you might remain silent forever and that is why the country will take years before individuals will enjoy the benefits of being a citizen. Things aren't flowing well because people are advised to bridle their tongues. The girl said the truth but humans are always scared of the truth. People want to be applauded for doing nothing. Even without she providing evidence, we know that to an extent that is the current reality of the country. In some developed countries, the fact that the girl was illegally detained citizens will rise against the Sars men but here we are advised to remain silent even in the face of oppression. So how do we enjoy the freedom of speech? I expected the Sars men to see that statement as criticism and work toward enhancing security in the country. I will end with a question. Does detaining the girl mean that the truth has been kept hidden?

Thanks for sharing this here but believe you me some people are still going to do,  I mean they are still going to be a victim. Well am not surprised it's a lady because most men don't talk much and they know how to behave themselves,  ladies are always eager to show themselves at all time.
Though sometimes it can be hot temper, arrogant, busy body,  not knowing when and where to talk. I think people should learn to keep this aside at all time and only talk when necessary.

These particular issue of talking has landed people into problem. That is why it is advised to exercise self restrain in public places and where ever you are. Most times when in public places more especially commercial vehicle, do not answer important calls unless it is and emergency situation. You do not know who is sitting next to you waiting for information to tap from your conversations. Sensitive discussion ought to be done in confined environment for privacy and avoidance of information leakage. Most times people complain of attack or possibly robbery but they forget to remember that they had a conversation at a particular place they were not supposed to and unfortunately some criminal element around them must had heard them and trailed them to their destination without them knowing and  launch an attack on them. All these are the reasons why people are advised to limit their choice of communication in public so as to be on the safe side.

Your hundred percent correct restraining oneself and guiding one tongue is very important in our society because the nature of nation even with evidence sometime you need good defendant to see you tru once it become a court case and anytime police and other force in Nigeria some may think our police are illiterate is when they want to purnish you, you will see laws and charges common example of this road side money they collect every day with the Keke and car once you fail to give just forget it because your day business will be bastardize by them with unknown charges jus as OP have nailed it one must be careful why making use of tongue not everything is village people or enemies as many see it unguarded tongue is liable to destruction.

The statement she made was very bad and the police officers have every right to punish her for that statement she made , it is an insult saying that to the face of the uniform men. Their maybe some police officers who are not doing their job well bit this doesn’t mean police officers needs to be disrespected, their are still police officers who are really working hard in fighting every criminal activity.

We really need to be careful the way we speak when we are outside because their some can of speech that can lead one to serious problem that will really be so bad to experience.
Come to think of it, in what sections of the Nigeria constitution did it state that citizens are not allowed the freedom of speech, I see no crime in what she said, people can say things out of frustration. And the situation of the country doesn’t make it any easier. it normal to get that impulse of wanting to react, not everyone has that self resilient mindset , I want to ask, if the lady in the context was an important person or a person with influence, will the officers have the effrontery to make a noise ? No !!! They saw a chance to oppress the young lady who is just  pouring out her own frustration in a way she can. To me it is abuse of power by the officers on the young lady, she committed no crime for her to be detained more less do the officers have anything on her.
Officers who are not doing their job properly, should be stand corrected cause no one is above correction, our country made those in uniform bigger than the law and we all know how excessive and intoxicating power can be. Don’t quote me wrong, it is important to know when and how to talk when you’re relating to people. Wrong Manner of communication can lead you into trouble. But still never cease your voice when you need to to be heard.

No matter how frustrated you are in a moment you shouldn't make some statement that you may regret later, the laws of this country is not working, so making a statement that you think ordinarily would have been ignored or look into by the authority can bring a problem not only for but your family at large.
Here in Nigeria if you must survive, you have to learn how to mind your business in other not to be used as an example to other people to learn, lets try as much as possible to advise in this direction if not, the problematic situation you will put us through won't be funny at all that's if you dont take precautions.

I was traveling from Port Harcourt to Bayelsa state yesterday afternoon, we go to a police check point and it was the Federal Sars men that stopped us. While they were doing their lawful duty of searching the vehicle and the passengers in it, a girl that was sitting behind me made a comment and the officer that was conducting the search heard her loud and clear. She said '' You people are just wasting our time, if it were the bad boys terrorizing the region you people won't stop them''. The Sars man got angry and asked the girl to come down from the vehicle, the girl came down and she was taken into their custody for further questioning about her comment. The officer asked the driver to carry the rest of the passenger and continue with the journey. Some passengers pleaded with the officer to let the girl go but they refused, they said the girl must show them evidence where she saw them not stopping bad boys. They accused the girl of working with bad boys. The girl was detained while we continued with our journey.
The girl wouldn't have found herself in that situation if she had kept quiet without saying a word.
we should learn how to control our tongue at all time. Don't say unguided words when in public place.

Well, I really felt so bad about how some people makes ugly and sealy speech more especially in public places, even if you have a civic right of freedom of speech but speak and defined your speech, this exactly how a lady batch into a marital conflict between a husband and wife telling the man's wife how the husband has extral marital affair that he even have a family.

Only this information lead to divorce or separation of the man and his wife, the man took the matter up just to know who  tire his family aside low and behold the woman was arrested and could not defined what she said concerning the man having another family.

I think some people should just be mindful of what to say while in the public places or things they are not sure of.

Because when the humiliation will come you can not withstand it so it really matter what you say in public.

I actually think the girl was right. We all have that civic right of Right to speech and expression and she was just expressing herself. She only said what she has been seeing. Them arresting her is totally wrong because they didn’t even have evidence or warrant for her arrest. It was absurb for them arresting her. They wouldn’t have gotten angry if she wasn’t right.
Yeah it’s good to control what we say in the public but in my opinion we shouldn’t neglect the fact that we have right. If not because money, power ad fame has taken the order of the day she was actually innocent.
If you know how this country dey then you go know say to control your tongue is every important because the whole system is whack and especially the police force. But notwithstanding know how to talk is very important because many many people don mis out for their blessings because of the way dem dey talk to people. But the police detaining the girl is not a new thing because there are so many cases of these kind of issue even the one way no be the person dey at fault the police go still turn am upsidedown against the girl or people.

In some situations too, if it were robbers that stopped the vehicle and were searching it, there was no way that girl would have made such a statement; she definitely would not have had the guts to even beg the robbers to free them. Some people always forget that the police or the arm force men are always doing their job for the safety of the citizens, and while they are doing their job to carry out their search, it's always wise to allow them to do their job. Some people like to learn in a hard way, and with what happened to her that day, I believe she will learn, and other people who experience that incident will also learn or tell the story to others who will learn from it.
Some people with rattling tongue that can never rest. They'll claim is their anger issues that's at fault whereas it isn't. One thing that's rampant in the country today is the fact that Police Officers are the one majorly receiving the blabbing from Nigerians, because it's not been seen anywhere that such a thing happened to any military man. Why can't Nigerians have the same fear for police officers as they have for the military officers.
One doesn't necessary have to let his anger decide his tongues outburst, anger management should be applied. We should avoid scenarios that we may mistakenly go to insult someone whose anger matches ours, because it'll elevate from mouth war to hand war and if unfortunate, injuries would happen. Let's not restrict our tongue wars to a set of people, let's restrict it to all people. Misunderstandings can occur and we settle amicably without it leaving the space of its occurrence. It's essential that we learn it up, it shows growth and maturity too.

What some of us don't know is that, the things we say out from our mouths have the power to build people up or tear them down or even affects us, so we should always be mindful of the impact our words can have. Sometimes it can be easy to speak without thinking, but I won't advise any soul born on this earth to speak without thinking.. Cause if I can remember back then in secondary school my teacher always use a poem that says "think before you do don't do before you think'' but taking a moment to pause and consider our words can make all the difference. A simple rule to follow is to ask yourself: "Is it true, is it kind, is it necessary?" before you speak.

People don't always mind what they utter out From their mouths most time because they feels like talking and thinks they can role their tongue at when needed or when not needed by anyone. I have similar case but it was about how we dress while traveling we should mind what we put on as men or female because we can feels that is our body hence we can wear whatever we feels like putting on while traveling.

A guy seated before me was on dreadlocks and wore a kind of toured trousers with much designs join with little hand pus and he was holding and the police men suspected him to be Yahoo boy and asked him to drop, along the line was forced to show them how phone and it was an iPhone and strange picture of a foreign woman inside the phone.

That was how he was arrested for more questioning, the bottom line is we should mind how we dressed as men or women so that we won't put ourselves into trouble.

Wetin that girl talk na the pure truth and na the thing weh deh everybody mind anytime weh we see checkpoints. But na to talk am out be the problem because of the guns weh those men deh carry. The girl allowed her mouth to run fast weh nobody send am at that point. She for wait make the motor move small then she go begin talk. Na frustration make many of us deh react to police that way. Them know how to extort and intimidate the masses but the real criminals be them friends.
Frustration jus dey everybody eye for this country na why small thing fight make person spark up cause trouble unnecessarily. The main issue be say even as the country hard reach, person go stay still dey try extort people of their hard earned cash. Na the height of unfairness be that, so in some situations when person  change am give all these highway men on black, e just dey justified. Sometimes Dem go leave their assigned duty to go dey do something else, where go still dey cause corruption in the country.
Then Nigerians on the other hand, we don too see this pple finish because the kain judgement wey we dey give them on sight dey too depressing. Like we go don already plan ahead how we go counter Dem even change am for Dem if Dem mess up. Make we try dey calm down sometimes. Yes we know say their ways no too pure but omor to avoid unnecessary escalated issues, make we jus reason on their level, we fit even use whining take hold them for our hand. We no need curse or spit out venom, e go only spoke their anger too. Everybody eye dey red so make we try dey chill sometimes so that we no go bring out the red eyes finish.

She was reckless with her tongue, no matter the fact that, we are as country are experiencing some form of lawlessness, we should try and respect those of them that are policing us, it's not easy to put your life on the line for the safety of others, if she's is charged to court, she can either go to jail or pay a fine for misguided statement against constituted authorities.
Some people are naturally born with verbal diarrhoea especially ladies they talk recklessly irrespective of where they are, I have met few of them like the lady mentioned by the OP whose recklessness of her tongue had put her into trouble, whenever law enforcement agents are performing their legal duties it is not the responsibility of any civilian to question them or make a derogatory remark to them especially when they are performing "Stop and Search" infact the lady was very lucky that it was not some military men that stopped her it would have brutal because she would be subjected to some severe punishment instantly and at the end she might never remain the same health wise infact she would admitted straight to the hospital.

Her statement was bad and it is an insult to any uniform personnel more like she meant they don’t know their job and they are not doing their work properly. It’s really disrespectful and if she should put herself in their shoes and someone make such statements to her how would she feel? Before we utter any statement we need to thoroughly think of how people will perceive it first, if it will hurt anyone then we shouldn’t say them to avoid problems like this.

The girl wouldn't have found herself in that situation if she had kept quiet without saying a word.

It serves her right, i have noticed this kinda things with girls they talk too much and they always feel they can talk about anything they like and I noticed again they don’t usually respect military personnels even though they are the ones that risk their lives to protect us. I have seen and heard couple of times where women talk bad about them and most of them are quite lucky not to be caught so this would probably serve as a lesson to others. No matter the position we find ourselves we should know how to use our tongue even though we feel we are superior to those around us, words hurts more and especially in a public place you will never know who some people are until you step on them so it’s better to mind your business to avoid unnecessary wahala.

In as much as Nigeria is a curupt country does not mean that one must have to say it in public, because what you say while at home and what you said outside are two different things because it might lead you into trouble.

The worst thing that can trigger a force man to do such thing, is by indirectly telling him to his face, that his not compitent to handle criminal case, but always claiming hard to Normal citizens.

In as much as the military sector is concerned there are force men that are doing there job perfectly but the reputation of the bad once have engloved the innocent ones. Emagine Making such statement in the present of someone who has been fighting for the right of the citizens, you would definitely get fucked up. So we should always mind our words or however ways control our tounge in other not to put ourselves hoddles.

misguided statements should be avoided in this country now as body dey pepper almost everybody now with the condition of the country, talk less of uniformed men wey no get joy right from the beginning.

Omo notwithstanding say the girl speak out within dey all of us mind including una wey dey that moto, because una self no like as the police people take dey delay una movement as e be say if dem see bad people dem no go do their job as dem dey do for innocent vehicle and people. Wetin that girl talk na passive word wey some police people no go react like that because dem too sabi say na true.

Me I dey tink say na just intimidation as usual. Okay if that girl sabi one small Navy officer now, you wan tell me say one small call no go cause wahala for deir head?

My brother las las, na number dem want still collect and begin run package with the babe but dem no wan make una sabi how e dey go.

Those people stupid no be small. And na those uniform men fit savage the country out of these politicians wey don impoverish this country. Them no dey see how other uniform men dey take chase out their ogas for office wey say dem be president.

Na dem go restart this country because dat na wetin the country need.

we should learn how to control our tongue at all time. Don't say unguided words when in public place.
this is a very serious matter that I learned in a very hard way, So let me share my experience regarding this.
During my finals in school I had a project supervisor that disturbed us seriously on the amount of money we should pay for my project work. We paid paid the amount he told us and when we finished the the whole project work, a day to our submission he came up with this random 15k that we should pay before ever signing our work. We begged him but he refused and that led us not to do our internal defence. That made me very angry at him and at several occasion  I will make unguided statement behind his back about how wicked the man his and on how he treated us very bad. The department latter allowed us to joined in the final defense and while we where waiting for out turn for the defence, conversation came up and I repeated the same statement that he is a bad man man and I made statement like " that man chop our money wetin no good" after I made that statement I looked behind me and saw that he was standing just next to me. I was shocked and speechless and even had to run away because I didn't know how to react at that moment and that was when my sense cane back to me that I was being too unguided with how I use my thong.  Till date I still have some things I needed him to help me with but because of what I said, I I don't even know how to approach him anymore.

I know once the thought gets to the mind, it becomes very difficult not to utter it out but we should be very careful on what we say in the public because the walls truly have ears.

I have some troubles with the framing of this topic because it seems that there are a variety of situations in which authority could end up getting abused and yeah of course, I don't likely know enough about Nigeria, yet people have natural rights to speak out and stand up to authority (but run the risk of getting quashed in some systems.. sometimes by other people helping the authorities and sometimes by the authorities), and people also have rights to be skeptical of authority even if they might or might not be able to speak out.

I also have troubles with the idea that generally speaking that people have to control their tongue, even though we do likely build up some of these ideas based on where we are living, and in that regard, there may well be circumstances in which danger comes to police officers if they do not make sure that the people in a crowd kind of a situation do not end up rebelling up against them while they are doing their supposedly official search and/or patrol duties.. and hopefully at the same time, they end up being accountable to higher authorities within their ranks if they go beyond certain levels of acceptable behavior...

Ultimately the police officers are supposed to be carrying out the public good and not just their own good, but yeah we know that police systems will some times have several levels of corruption so it can be difficult for superiors to hold lower level officers corrupt if some of the superiors are also corrupt, so in the context of a search, it could become quite difficult to challenge any officers when they are in the middle of carrying out their official duties because they are not going to want to increase their own levels of danger by allowing the crowd to mass up against them, and during such situations, there maybe is not as much ability to speak out freely because of the balancing of the officer's need to carry out their duties and to portray themselves as legitimately exercising authority and they also want to stay safe too.

Frequently, we are not very likely to know all the circumstances of any search, except maybe what the officer says and if there might have been some context or some other similar searches, and if we just presume all searches are not just and/or legitimate then maybe we are thinking like the girl and we want to say something in the middle and while the search is taking place, but then at that time, we may well end up interfering with the officer's abilities to carry out their official search duties whether it may have been a just and fair search or not.

As far as the police's ability to merit out their own punishment towards the girl, those kinds of behaviors will vary from location to location, and surely some police officers are not going to engage in those kinds of behaviors to met out personal justice or even to be self-serving because they have internal ideas of right and wrong in regards to carrying out their official duties, but the extent to which some officers might decide to engage in those kinds of behaviors of either metting out their own personal versions of justice or receiving benefits from the carrying out of their official duties might depend partially upon the likelihood that they will end up getting caught and/or punished for such behaviors...and perhaps it also might depend partially if their colleagues are engaging in such behaviors and getting away with such behaviors, then they may well be more willing to do what many of the other officers are doing in the same kinds of situations.  The upper echelon of officers might even allow a certain level of those kinds of personal and corrupt behaviors to happen with their officers, even though the conduct might not be official and yet it could gain some semi-official status if the higher up officers are allowing self-serving metting out of justice to take place..

So why is it that all of a sudden the girl was accused as among the bad guys and had to be detained?
It's a lot worse to do that than what she just said. Remember that it is supposed to be "Innocent until proven guilty" and not the other way around.
That was just a comment, what happened to the liberte de parole.
