Altcoins are good to be allocated in long-term investment, in my opinion, those who occupy a good position for a long time. My advice is you better choose for an altcoin that is good for long-term resistance, namely the ehtereum, because the price lasts until now 200 $, I am sure that prices will increase in the next few days and you will get results.
in my opinion, altcoin is good for the first long-term resistance of ethereum, because the current price does not shift from 200 $ and most likely the price will rise again in 2017 and the most stable movement compared to other coins.
In long term better of course to hold XRP, NEO, Monero because this coins already showed their confidence and still not beaten so much from their main places, also highly will recommend to look at NEO because if you hold this token you will get 0 fees commision and really good ICO's which would be shown at 2018
I thinking about NEO, because I think NEO is the closest competitor to ethereum, and of course that will be a huge potential for the long term
As per my opinion, Ethereum, stratis, Waves, Sia coin, Verge and NEO are the best altcoins to hold for the long term as all these coins have potential and are available now at very cheap prices from their highs this year.

long term coins are according to me the best and some of them that worth to keep them i think are NEO lit and maybe etherium also.
You can buy and hold NEO and Ethereum if you want to choose safe investment option. You can also buy and hold some altcoins which have low market cap but they are more risky than neo and eth.

The market is really unstable, at the moment falling, but this is the time to buy coins with a good product or a promising project. If you are not able to analyze projects, then buy altcoins and top 10, so you will have less risk.
I really like DeepOnion for instance which support the TOR network and natively integrated into it, small marketcap privacy coin which has a dev team working hard to bring the next big innovation in multiring signature anonymous transaction technology similar to Monero.
