It is not a new project and they have been there for a while now.

If you want your investment is safe try to look at coinmarketcap top 20 and analyze the coin you want to invest but if you want safer better to hold your bitcoins or invest it on lending websites, Small investment like $50 - $20 is not good for short term trading better do long term and ofcourse you need patience before taking your profit.Do not invest on mining website that promising will give you a good profit every month because all that site are turning into scam and runs your money.

I think you should buy some WAVES and hold them for some time as waves will surely go up in future. It has a lot of potential and a price above 10$ can be expected by end of this year.
I dont think that starting now with deposit less than 1k USD gives you any real profit. In 2017 its too late to start trade/invest with 50$
