I think ICOs are a bit more like "heavily discounted vouchers" that may be redeeemed against future blockchain infrastructure (with risk) and/or might have future intrinsic value where they can be spent as a form of currency.

To a significant extent, network effects drive the value of the coins plus the utility of the related blockchain infrastructure, where as more people provide/use the infrastructure (mining pools / nodes) and as more people hold coins, the probable future value increases.

All of this drives bubble behaviour and attracts scam artists as well as genuine visionary technologists. Money can be made in bubbles but highly volatile currencies must be considered as high risk.

Think of them as IPOs, but the founders raise money using popular cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, litecoin and most popularly, Ethereum, instead of fiat currencies. In return for your investment, you get the ICO's proprietary cryptocurrency. The investments work pretty much like shares, which in most cases don't have voting rights. As the company grows, the value of your crypto grows. You can either hold or cash out for fiat or other mainstream cryptocurrencies.

It really depends on the ICO.

Some coins have intrinsic value, such as ETH which is required to be spent by any developers who want to use the Ethereum blockchain.

Others such as E4ROW are written into a smart contract that will pay the coin holders dividends (in ETH) based on how well the products produced by the E4ROW team are performing.

BAT has another model where the coin is spent by the consumer in order to customize their advert experience and by publishers in order to target their desired audience.

The value of other coins seem to be based purely on the speculation that there will be increased demand for them from others in the future which will drive the price up. Might want to be wary of those ones :-)

What is ICO?
ICO Extension of Initial Coin Offering. Initial means the earliest, Coin means digital token / coin and Offering means bidding, when interpreted in its entirety means the earliest coin offerings before being launched into the free market.
ICO is usually offered by the developers where their goal is to raise funds to develop the projects they do in this case is a digital coin. They need funds to maximize the projects they undertake to quickly develop and can be quickly completed.
For developers they will get funding to accelerate the projects they develop so that they can be enjoyed by many people. For investors will get a token or coin which later coin can be traded freely in the market exchangers.
The advantage for investors who follow ICO before the coin is launched to the free market is the price given will be cheaper. And usually when the coin is launched the price will jump up to more than 5x the price of ICO. This is what makes investors enjoy this ICO.

An ICO, or Initial Coin Offering, is a raising money battle by a digital currency venture where they offer their coins/tokens in return for cash (regularly in BitCoin, Ether, Litecoin etc...). This cash is later used to finance the improvement of the venture. The motivator for the financial specialists is that, evidently, the cost for the tokens will be worth endless supply of the task and along these lines speculators will make a benefit.

ICO (Initial Coin Offering) is a means of crowdfunding a new cryptocurrency and an innovative idea that can be implemented on the blockchain technology (mostly, as of now). If you have heard about IPOs (Initial Public Offerings) in traditional stock market, you'll understand that ICO is a little similar, yet different, concept but for cryptocurrencies. When some bad-ass developers and entrepreneurs come into contact with each-other and generate a bad-ass idea, they offer tokens for new cryptocurrency to gather enough funding so that they can convert their idea into reality. The significant difference between ICOs and IPOs is that, when you invest, you get tokens of that new cryptocurrency which may get listed on the exchanges once the idea has been developed.

ICO - Initial Coin Offering is sometimes called IPCO - Initial Public  Coin Offering is a startup fund that aims to raise capital by  distributing some of the resources to people who have decided to support  it.
With  ICO we usually deal with before the project is completed, but funds can  also be used to provide technical support for an already operating  currency. The  additional advantage of ICO is that supporters who believe in success  will tell others about the new project by raising awareness in the  cryptanalyst community. This also ensures a more fluent currency.

I think ICO is an extension of the initial coin offering so you can get a good deal to buy the coin you have and can get a lot of bonus from ICO and certainly can grow the assets you have.
