Greeting everyone. I was newly introduced into the system by a friend who made me to have so much interest in the system with the zeal and the passion to learn and gain adequate experience on the system but one of the major problem I'm having now is that I'm not well clarify of what merit entails and as such I will be very grateful if any good minded person can kindly throw more light on that to enable me understand in details and also benefit from the system.

Of course you can take the appropriate action by visiting this link, and it has all kinds of information based on how you can level up from a new account.  Note that the concept of merit system in particular is fully given.

Merit History Link: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.28856522

OP's friend didn't explain to him what merits are and how the merit system works?

BTW, congratulations tomos81 for your new, well-deserved ranking up. I hope you the best as a new Hero Member. A good example to explain bestcandy how the system works in the practice Wink

After reading more of what has been written in this forum, including the rules that have been set. It's also a good idea for beginners to try making posts that have and contain their own ideas after they read more articles on this forum. Because that's how everyone starts while looking for knowledge that can make themselves better, including in discussions in this forum, because if they just read without applying it to themselves there won't be any further benefits that they can feel.

Quote from: Mayor of ogba
Merit is like a reward given to users of this forum who are providing useful information that will help and guide users who are not getting a clear understanding of how things work here, just the way you want to know what merit is all about. Merit also shows how good you are in this forum. With merit, you can achieve different ranks in this forum if you can earn the required amount that will make you achieve a new rank here. If you receive 2 merit, you will have 1 sendable (sMerit), which you can send to another user of this forum.
Whenever you make a good contribution that impact other users in the forum, some users in the forum can decide to merit you to encourage you to continue the good work you are doing by displaying quality post in the forum.

With the respond many users has responded in this trend, it will make many beginners to know what merit is all about in the forum, and they will know what to do to achieve merits in the forum.

And people use merit to rank up in this forum, that is why you see members, full members, senior members, Hero and legendary which is the highest rank in the forum and if you want to move to member rank, you must achieve 10 merits before you can get to that second rank.

From my little understanding merrit is just all about reward of good work either by comment or reply made in the forum as the work help to solve the issue problem either by virtue of given him/ her ideas to what he seek to know. Merit also indicate that person is improving on quality post that the board or forum required.

Best wishes to you too on this forum. It is good that you joined this forum through a friend but your friend did not give you the basic knowledge for which you asked the Regarding merit question. You need to know not only the merit related content but also the rules here as you have just entered here.
It is not right to rush to achieve merit, you post here informative and instructive even give more time hope you will be able to achieve it. In the beginning many newbies are eager to get merit, I have seen many members of my local board asking for merit by doing only two to three posts which is not right at all. One should earn merit by one's own work, one's own merit and never beg from anyone.

If you look carefully at the forum admin's post regarding merit, you will get a better understanding of what merit is.

First you are welcome to this wonderful forum and in this forum we talk or discuss about bitcoin and cryptocurrency I believe your friend should or would've let you know about this though we have local board where some talk outside bitcoin is also been discussed. However,  merit is what shows that your post or reply was/is really helpful or useful to the forum that means that your post or reply has quality and merit will show your position in the forum and the more merit you earn the higher your rank and that will help you to benefit from this forum outside the general knowledge you will acquire in this forum.
Merits are the evident factor obtained because this have become one of the possibility of growing bitcoin talk accounts. I've watched closely to observed the numerous aspects of the system, knowing the exact spot to make improvements on. The forum is open for everyone that's ready to place consistent efforts, brilliant performance. He's no newbie to me, I presumed he already have ideas to explore in the system and have become one of the promising members to push through challenges.

to go much to explain what is merit, from normal way of understanding you know that everyone is interested for the merit you are emphasizing for because merit is like the engine behind the forum when you don't have merit you will have a limited growth but when you have merit you will continue to grow for this community so that is why merit is very necessary and the everybody is inquisitive because if you don't end in merit your growth will it be limited so on my own understanding I think that merit is needful to get.

All other members have sufficient amount of merit in their account but we who are new members like us do not have merit in their account then we must have this question how to earn merit. This question came to my mind like this question came to my mind but I tried to find the answer to this question myself. Tried to go into the profile of those who have merit in their profile to see how they got merit.  Going to their profile and going to their merit list I saw that they have shared informative posts and their posts are logical enough which is not ours that's why they got merit.
Actually, not only informative posts can be a way for you to get Merit. you just need to read and explore more boards and threads for you to read. that way you will naturally increase your knowledge.

like thread example, [CHALLENGE] Run A Bitcoin Node: 14 Days To 14 Merits  .
in this good thread, you can learn, try, and get Merit. Don't be shackled by fast ways to rank up. just enjoy your process in the forum and the more experienced you are, the more appreciated you will be.
But to do the thing you mentioned requires considerable talent. If you don't have enough talent then you will fail to find this section as well as how to download bitcoin core how to submit but you won't understand. Even to earn merit by posting here you need to have merit and posting here properly is also a merit act.

I'd be grateful also if I get some merits.

Don't ask for it, go out there and earn it. It's not that difficult once you learn everything and know when, how, and what to write about a topic you are reading in any section of the forum. Don't have the misconception that you won't get enough attention because you are new in the forum, a lot of people think this way but there is no reality in that.

If I'm reading a post of yours that I like, your writing style, your points, everything is done very well, I wouldn't mind meriting that post regardless of your rank because it doesn't matter. So all you need to do is learn and improve and you will make it with time. Don't rush it because it's not a race.

Improve your knowledge, make posts only when you need to, and make sure you are making sense all the time.

Merit is only given to members who are able to produce posts that contain information and are educative, merit will be given by members who read your post if they deem it worthy. Start by looking for information and reading it to master something related to Cryptocurrency, you can summarize everything in a Thread to share here so you can educate other members.

Motivation/suggestions/tips regarding how to earn merit have been explained in the previous comments, but it comes back to your will whether you want to apply the suggestions and tips that have been given previously or just consider them as momentary knowledge. Continue to explore your potential while on the forum by using learning methods that are easy for you to understand, have confidence in your own abilities to make it easier for you to explore the forum and get merit even if you never ask for it.

All you need to do is search for it and add bitcointalk at the end of the title then you'll see a lot of threads about it. Anyway, I don't want to repeat what others have explained but this is what I can say about merit. It is implemented for prevention for shit posts and people who wanted to rank just by posting shit posts. You see, ranm requirements doesn't require merits to rank up before so that's why it is also the rank requirements till now. It is also used to reward forum members who posted high/good quality posts and motivate them to post more high, good or constructive posts.

If you want to gather detailed knowledge about merit then surely you can check this detailed information. And all the information you can collect from here, this merit system is launched in 2018.

This merit system, which was introduced in 2018, was the only appropriate approach. If you want to get more ideas, if these are the most you can read then you will get suitable ideas from here.

something I want to advise all the beginners that come across this community so that whenever they are registered in this community there will not be much interested in earning merit, I know quite well but I'm merit is very necessary and is very important for any user that to find itself to this community but what that will fetch you a merit is when you have a positive respond to the community and when you are creative for the community so a quality post will it determine if you are going to grow positively in the community or not so if he believe in writing trash I don't think that your growth will be rapid one

That's true, merit is not by the virtue of how you desire for getting one, but it is gotten by the standard and quality in what you deliver as a post to the community, so if someone should need merit, then he has to first work on himself and earn a good number of quality posts that are merits attractive, even though i don't also see it as a right but a privilege for someone to receive a merit, so we shouldn't be in that position of judging by ourself in what we post as quality post and must be given merits.

Well merit is not just earned base on how long your thread is or how short it is but rather it is earn base on how informative, useful, important etc your thread is and merit is what help one to move in their current position to another, that is from newbie to jñr member to member etc but I will advice you don't strive for merit now because it can mislead you and also make you feel discourage in this forum but rather try and read threads and understand what this place is all about.

Merit is a way that is used to determine the rank of users on the forum and a way to validate their post. Usually you would see a lot of persons make useless post on the forum but the merit system was introduced to reduce the amount of users posting rubbish on the forum.

Anyone can give you merit on the forum as long as they have smerit to spare which is gotten when a user earns merit on the forum(½ per 1 merit earned), although they are special users that are merit sources that are given a number of merit to give to quality post on the forum.

You shouldn't be bothered about individual preferences on what a quality post is cause they are several merit sources on the forum and other users that can give merit to you so if everyone skips your post then you should know that you've gotta improve on your post quality.

I have check all the replies you have in this your post and I can see that your question has been answered, what I have to say is that, welcome to the forum, without even telling you that the forum is a place where you will learn and even if you don’t know anything about it, immediately after joining the forum you will have people who will show you how you are going to do and what are the things to avoid to not being banned, and about the merit you don’t understand, just check on the link that was giving to by the members and you will surely understand and even thanks them at the end. But before you try to focus about merit, I will advise you focus on the forum first you should try to understand what here is all about, the reason why I say that is because many newbie don’t focus in anything in forum now than how to have merit and build their account to another level.

~snip~
forget about the merit system and work on yourself as how you will be able to make quality posts, then you will understand more better.
That's right, this is the most important thing and must be understood by users here. Most beginners are looking for merit and rank which will later be used to get additional work here.

they slightly ignore the quality of posts and discussions related to what is on the forum. Instead of wanting to get merit and increase ranking quickly, people like this will usually spam more and just waste their time on the forum.

So it would be better if you keep learning, and read anything related to crypto more often. because that's where you can grow.

A piece of advise I strongly suggest you will be needing to keep you going progressively on the forum, which is, don't go chasing for merits as that will be the wrong way to go. Rather, go for knowledge, learn and add to the little I believe you already know and heard about cryptocurrency  as a newbie. Your growth in the forum is in how much of a beneficial knowledge you can give/contribute to the community. That's the secret of how merit are attracted which in extension is the purpose of the meriting system.

You will want to read this below:
Newbies read before posting
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/newbies-read-before-posting-1689727

This is a good advice to the newbie, some newbies join this forum because they've heard that ranked up members earn BTC rewards in signature campaigns, and to be eligible you'll need to get enough merits to rank up. When they join and the merit is not coming their way as fast as they'd expected, they'll become very frustrated and their morale will become low to continue in the forum. It's best to join the forum as a newbie, with the intention to learn about Bitcoin and the crypto space, gain knowledge and theoretical experience on it's investment and trading, that will be more beneficial in their crypto journey.

Let getting merit to be a secondary desire for any newbie in the forum, when they've increased their crypto knowledge and begin to manifest it in quality posts, other forum members will notice the posts and some will reward it with merit.

Those that introduced you to the forum never took their time in telling you the use of merit, maybe if you had also taken your time in going through the forum, you might have seen something that talks about merit, however, if you're a quality poster, then you should be able to understand the meaning and use of merit, forget about the merit system and work on yourself as how you will be able to make quality posts, then you will understand more better.

The dream of immediately getting merit can perhaps be shifted to a target and combined with initial planning when you register on the forum. You shouldn't be trapped in your dreams without taking any action. It's best to divert your dreams of getting merit by producing quality work. Prioritize reading several threads that have been pinned on the B&H board and several other boards to increase your insight into how to avoid bans and also produce quality posts that can bring merit.
Don't make the difficulty of getting merit an obstacle to existing in the forum. The mindset of having difficulty getting merit can be overcome by studying topics that raise the theme of merit. As long as you have the intention to progress and try to remain consistent in the forum, sooner or later you will get merit if you are able to produce quality posts.

I will give you a little advice about merit, merit was invented in 2018, this merit system has improved a lot since its introduction. If you do good and quality posts then you will be happy and given as merit award. And if you acquire two merits then you will definitely have one Smerit born and you can give it to someone else.

What do you mean by (system) because I can see that you mentioned that word repeatedly in your write up.

When you say system, you mean bitcointalk as a forum?

Because that is the only thing I can figure out that you are referring to as a system, and if that be the case then sorry to correct you that this is a discussion forum and not a system.

Users who ask OP's question and this happens on a regular basis could be summarized as follows (one or more of the points apply):

  • lazy to search the forum as answers are there numerous times
  • too dumb to search efficiently or even consider it at all
  • prefer to be spoon fed than find answers and solutions on their own

Am I too harsh? Maybe, maybe not.
To sound minds it is not harsh, but to weak minds you are too harsh.
  • Lazy us find it simple and easy to post shits than to waste time searching for it.
  • To dumb to learn how to search
  • They were told that people are being spoon fed here. So, instead of searching the internet, they will come here to ask "what is cryptocurrency?"

something I want to advise all the beginners that come across this community so that whenever they are registered in this community there will not be much interested in earning merit, I know quite well but I'm merit is very necessary and is very important for any user that to find itself to this community but what that will fetch you a merit is when you have a positive respond to the community and when you are creative for the community so a quality post will it determine if you are going to grow positively in the community or not so if he believe in writing trash I don't think that your growth will be rapid one

I don't care if a newbie or other low rank wants to rank up fast. If it's their goal, so be it. Unless that someone posts and asks how to do it. Then I know, this account lacks probably almost all abilities to actually achieve such a goal.

Take e.g. the surprisingly good and condensed summary of ChatGPT linked in one of the early replies in this thread:

If you digest the suggested advise there properly, you'd have a good chance to succeed.

Users who ask OP's question and this happens on a regular basis could be summarized as follows (one or more of the points apply):

Looking at OP's posting history reveals a flawed strategy, if there's a strategy at all. OP either opens a new thread but doesn't interact in his threads further despite opening one or posts a single reply in other threads, so far. That is minimal interaction and I'd say, do not open threads just for the sake of it and if you don't intend to take care of your own threads, i.e. participating in a discussion based on given replies.

Follow Asuspawer09's advice: nobody likes newbies who is evident that want to get merits fast in order to rank up as soon as possible, so if that's your goal it will take you much longer to get there. Enjoy your journey here instead, learn about Bitcoin (and other crypto if that's your interest, you can get a lot of info about many altcoins too here) and when you have a decent reputation you will start earning them with little effort.

Visit the merit thread that is where you can find the perfect explanation of what merit is all about. Basically its the point the you would need in order to rank up here in the forum.

When you already understand what is merit what I would recommend that don't make it your goal, what you could do is start your investing journey into the cryptocurrency space, I mean there was no way you could completely understand everything unless you going to experience it, so the only way is to actually invest by yourself, with the exception of if you already know what you are doing, you don't really want to just invest without having the knowledge when it comes to Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, blockchains, networks etc. that is just the basics of it. This is where the forum is going to be useful, because it is a forum you could ask anywhere around where as long as it is related to Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, etc. If there is something that you don't know and you can't find the right information online that is where the forum gonna go in, ask anything here as long as it is only the right thread a lot of experienced members is going to answer all of your questions.

When you gain your experience you could answer most of the questions here as well helping other members, and that is where the merit could start dropping for sure, I mean sharing your ideas, news, and topics is already a good thing, but just don't stress yourself on getting merit, you're going to get merit as long as you are active and making a good quality post here.

Merit in bitcointalk forum is a rank that signifies your positive contributions, offering others help where they need guidance, and above all merit shows Quality. The more a user have a merit the more it show the Quality the person posses. So let just say merit is a reward to your useful contribution to the forum. It also shows your level of growth in the forum, like if you are really contributing to the forum are or not. I will even say Merit defines a user, you can say something about a user from the merit they earn. Like if they are really contributing to the forum or not, and if the user is intellectually good about cryptocurrency.

When you earn merit it shows your worth in the forum, it shows you possess some kind of quality, it shows you have skills to help the forum with  and with that other users in the forum tends to pay’s a lot more attention to anything you say, because it is believed that you are making research, learning and working hard.

Merit has it benefits too, when you earn some certain amount of merit, you tend to  qualified for some signature campaign in the forum which can earn you some money too. So it All depends on your hard work, consistent research so you can contribute meaningfully to the forum.

If you search, you can find many topics about Merit with a Merit & new rank requirement thread that was given in above posts.

Newbies - Read before posting is another thread for newbies to start.

Two topics about forum ranks and merit. The last topic is from ChatGPT answers and you can nearly get everything you need with ChatGPT about merit, how to earn it.

FAQ: Everything you need to know about forum 'activity, account ranks and merit
I asked ChatGPT on how to earn merit on Bitcointalk

There are two places, namely when outside to use your free time using a smartphone but only to control and see market developments. and when I'm at home I usually use a laptop because I can work more optimally while sleeping and can also open several tabs or browsers. Another thing is to distribute working time because this is also a strategy to make more optimal and systematic use of the forum. Even so, still follow the suggestions and input from others, who knows if there is a better way. Another experience is that if we give to others, other people will continue to return the favor to us. What is strictly prohibited is that taking these news posts is categorized as falsification of writing

Merit is the means to increase your rank. You can increase your rank according to your post and merit. Eg:- If you want to achieve "Member" rank then you need 10 merit and 60 activities. If you want to achieve "full member" rank then you need 100 merit and 120 post. This way you can increase your rank through merit and post. I am giving you a picture taken from this Bitcoin forum, where you can better understand how much merit and how many posts you can get which rank.

Merit is what simply makes you to grow in rank depending on the amount given to you by a forum member. Merit is usually given to a person through a quality post made by the person  in any where in the forum. It helps to identify your rank and your positive contribution on the forum. But I think you should study more by reading, you will get to know more better. Everyone else here was once a newbie so don feel left out you will understand how the system fully works when you may have spent 2 to 3 months and above here.

Merits are like "reactions" to your post in which people may give to your given comment. These so-called reactions have an impact on your forum rank as the more reactions that you receive, the more likelihood that your forum rank would be upgraded. The only difference is that, there is a limited amount of reactions where a person may give, unlike in Facebook where you could like/react on every post that you get.

In this forum, these reactions are called merits in which people would give your thread/comment if they find it useful or helpful in some way. The more you have merits, you would be eligible to rank-up, like what theymos said in this THREAD:

Now, what does it mean if you have a higher rank in this forum? Well, there are signature campaigns that you may participate depending on your forum ranking and these campaigns pay you weekly in BTC. The higher your rank is, the higher the pay that you would receive at the end of every week.

Be reminded, however, that merits should not be your MAIN goal in this forum. Use it as an inspiration in creating several posts/replies and the by-product of your efforts would be receiving merits in the process.

Does questions around merit really mean chasing merit?

Your own qualifications are not just a measure of talent because it depends on what you use your talent for. Even the follow-up of questions around merit may indicate a desire to better understand its concepts. Eligibility criteria can be expressed through different gradings. I think that opportunities to develop your skills are created over time and environment.

A look at that query, reveals the quest to understand the nitty-gritty of the environ you find yourself.

However, I believe merits is an invaluable and indelible part of this community as it is with its psychological vibes. With different membership grades, the psychological drive behind it is obvious as well seeing some one with high post/activity and merit is just like every day life.

Can I say that merit speaks of the quality of knowledge acquired and released here...

To be honest, during my first month on this community, I didn't even know how the merit works, I didn't feel much concern about it until I started to receive the merit too. It surprises me how a newbie that has just been on the forum for 6 days is already asking about the merit system, there are other important rules about the community which you need to know about, if you go against those rules, you will face the consequences. Get to know the forum rules, stay active on the forum and you will even know how the merit works.
Maybe he is new to this forum and even he doesn't know how Merit works? For which maybe he wanted to know about Merit. I think its not wrong to ask because as a newbie many members ask such questions we should answer them properly. In fact, one of the reasons why people are so concerned about merit is that it shows their worth. Maybe all members of this forum have the right to ask all kinds of forum related questions, I think asking about merit is also within the rules of this forum.

Apprentices need to know from the very beginning how merit works and how to earn merit or how much merit earns a rank or how much activity earns a rank membership. Whenever a member's post is constructively informative, if someone likes that post, they can give it a merit gift.
Good people, I must confess that some questions asked by one will make other beginners like me not to ask again haven been informed by the amiable responds given to those questions. Not to forget, info flows through different channels, hear say, and many other sources... Thanks for time used in keeping others informed about the whole thing.

If you are interested in the system with so much zeal and passion to learn and gain knowledge about it, I believe you don't need to be looking for Merits right after joining the forum, you don't even need to know about it if you are here to learn and grow.
I know it has become cliché for us to tell newbies not to worry about merits, but i think if a user who is truly a newbie joins the forum, it is normal for them to ask what merits really mean, though they can use the search button to find out for themselves.

The purpose of merits is to encourage quality posts and to stop shitposters from ranking up, thus i don't think it is bad for newbies to inquire about merits, it can act as something that motivates them to make quality posts and contribute constructively. Yes, it could also negatively affect those who chase after it excessively, but for many it could become a positive motivation and work in their favor.

Op, why are you so interested to know what merit is all about like your whole life depends on it, why can't you ask your friend who introduced you to the forum to educate you on the necessary things to know or do before you think of knowing about things that comes after you have gotten the knowledge because you don't seem to know things about the forum or Bitcoin. Do you want to benefit in knowledge or you were told that you could become rich overnight after joining the forum because from your post you seem to have been told about the importance of gaining merits that is why you are too inquisitive to know how you can get it instead of developing and increasing your knowledge which is the most important thing to do.

I don't understand why your friend didn't explain the basics to you after referring you to the forum if he wanted you to join the forum to learn about Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies then he did the right thing by not mentioning about merits and making you chase them, but even then, he should have at least let you know how the forum works in the first place so that you don't need to come here and start asking questions about very basic things.

Anyway, below is the post where you can read all about merit, what it is, its purpose and importance, and every other detail that you need to know about it:

However, for knowledge's sake, let me enlighten you about it.

Merit is a point that you get from other forum users as an appreciation or a reward for your posts that they like or find constructive. It is subjective as to why one gives it to you, one might agree with a point you have mentioned, or find a post of yours humorous, it can be for any reason known to the person giving it to you, but in general, merit is a symbol of appreciation and an indicator that you are a good poster of this forum and that you deserve ranking up, which is why you can only have a higher rank over time if you manage to gain a substantial amount of merits, and if you fail to do so, you won't be able to gain higher ranks no matter how many posts you make and how active you are in the forum.

I hope I made it clear enough for you making it as simple as possible.  Smiley

If the topic, post or thread you create contains elements of the requirements for a quality, constructive and informative post, then you really deserve to be called a quality member. Merit Source and other generous members appreciate your posts with merit. But if on the contrary, the majority of posts he makes are very close to spam, zero value topics or worse still off topic, then you will be considered a shitposter or spammer.

Merit will be given based on the quality of the post you make, each member has their own criteria for assessing whether a post deserves merit or not depending on their individual point of view. Always try to make quality posts that are useful for other members. If generous members judge your posts to meet quality criteria, they will reward your posts with merit. Never expect merit for every post you produce because it can have a negative effect when no one appreciates your post with merit.

I will also want to ask if there are future plans to change the merit system. I understand that the actual merits are not sendable to others and only the sMerits can be sent. I'm curious to know if for instance, I can also gift out of my actual merit to a user.
The merit system is working well the way it is designed, it might not be perfect, but there is nothing that needs to be changed about it (right now). You cannot send out your "merits" to other users and the admin is not going to waste their time implementing such a thing, because rarely will anybody use it, you can only send Smerits to others.
I also wanted to ask if there are threads where we can decide to submit our posts for a review for merits gifting, when we create quality posts that are worthy of meriting.
Yes:
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/self-moderated-report-unmerited-good-posts-to-merit-source-5093271
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/merit-share-your-best-poststhreads-with-fillippone-to-be-merit-assessed-5412657
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/restarted-post-history-review-offer-5426440
Lastly, how can I know which of the posts to submit that are worthy of receiving merits, what are the indices of measuring a quality post in the forum?
There is nothing set in stone about that, quality posts could even be subjective sometimes. That being said, if you grow your knowledge and you are genuinely contributing to discussions, helping other users out and not spamming, then you stand a chance to earn merits in the forum.

OP, whatever you do on the forum within the space of time you will be here, make sure to adhere to forum rules and regulations. The forum wedges a heavy stick on plagiarism. It's so you take note and learn how to always reference and give credit to authors whose materials you use in your posts/threads.

Let's me drop some common tips that would help increase the quality of yah post.

*Always take your time when replying or creating a thread , you have all the time so don't need to be in hurry.
It's common with most newbies. They find it difficult putting more time in creating threads. We often get to find loosely written threads/posts without in-depth contributions and I guess it's because those are written in a haste. I hope they get to read this post and slow down on the rush. I've yet to see anyone here who got an award as the fastest user for opening thread(s).

Quote
* Always read through all the reply in a post to gain More understanding (due to learning from different sources) and also to avoid repeating what someone has said already, before posting
This is where reading and comprehension are valued more than posting without substance.

I can see so many of the members here have clarified you with what merit means to this forum. Merit is a reward for your content. Because no one of the members can just give a merit without you making a constructive post, it is the quality of your post that determines the merit you can earn from every one of your posts.

But since you are new to this forum and you have never navigated some of the parts of this forum, I will advise you to visit some of the pasted threads for more understanding. Is there, you can learn how to afford your knowledge and also become an expert like other members here. I see that some members have provided you with some links, which can also help you if you take your time to go through them. They can help you comprehend everything into full details.

Op, in as much as you have been given link to read how the merit system works, be rest assured that getting merit isn't a mandatory thing here if you only want to learn from the community, however if you have come to spend quality time and participate in all round activities in the forum such as ranking up, joining signature campaigns, then merit is a must thing for you in this regard.
Welcome to the forum and read the rules first.

I will be grateful if any good minded person can kindly throw more light that to enable understand in details.

I believe you should check this post out to understand what the merit is all about
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/merit-new-rank-requirements-2818350

The merit system was implemented in 2018 the forum Admin due to the rampant increase of shit posters and the need for quality post on the forum. It is the reward you get for creating good, useful, quality and helpful post here on the forum. I believed your friend should have informed you a bit about the merit along side as a requirement for you to rank up. When you make good post you are rewarded merits by members who finds your post of quality and helpful to him or the community. For every one merit you earn, you have 0.5 smerits(sendable merit) so if you earn two merits, you get 1 smerits which you can give to other members you find their post helpful.

Thank you for this convincing explanation, I will also want to ask if there are future plans to change the merit system. I understand that the actual merits are not sendable to others and only the sMerits can be sent. I'm curious to know if for instance, I can also gift out of my actual merit to a user.

I also wanted to ask if there are threads where we can decide to submit our posts for a review for merits gifting, when we create quality posts that are worthy of meriting.

Lastly, how can I know which of the posts to submit that are worthy of receiving merits, what are the indices of measuring a quality post in the forum?

Merit system here works like a gold if you get one means youre good poster and someone must have like you.  But the thing is you need to understand clearly how it works, as those some newbies thought that having merit is good for earning money here but yeah it could be a source by joining signature campaign when they rank up but its also a bread and butter to some since its the fundamental of the forum. Before I always trying to earn this merit just to rank up but now I viewed it as something improvement to myself when I received one and of course you should not hoard it hence give it too to some you think improving as well.

Merit is the reward someone receive from his quality post in this forum, because without you develop quality post in the forum to impact others users and make them to show interest on your thread to merits you, you will not improve in the forum because we use merits to rank up in this forum. You can see different rank members in this thread which is the evidence of the merits they earned in the past that made them to achieved all those merits to became such members in the forum, and if you can be serious to continue learning from this forum and other related books that related to cryptocurrency, I believe you will begin to experience merits from your quality post. All you need to do to make your plans successful in this forum without any challenges, try to read and study the rules and regulations that governed this forum, because there is what will call merits abuse and if you find yourself to such habit you will not like what will happen to your account.

If I am being honest with you, I have never researched what the Forum says about Merit precisely.  But I think there is some sort of 'common sense' along the Forum Members about who deserves Merit.

Typically, the people who send out Merits either do it to support some body who put a lot of effort into a Reply or Thread, which I think is the universal acceptance of who Merits should be sent to.  You write a well constructed post or you share knowledge of yours that is relevant.  As a reward, you earn Merits which allow you to grow your account.

But then there are also people who send out Merits because they agree with a post.  Which I think is a controversial way of distributing Merits and I always choose NOT to do it but show support through my own Replies instead.  This is controversial because while opinions are important, in my opinion it should not be a reason to earn Merits.  Particularly if the opinion is not well constructed but just agreed with.

However.  While controversial, there are people earning a TON of Merits not even for opinions or knowledge, but kind of randomly.  Check out the Wall Observer thread in the Speculation Board and tell me why so much Merit is sent out to so many people.

Well.  Now I am going to get bashed for what I just said!  I just do not understand how that Thread works if you ask me, I never understand it.  Particularly if you are out of touch with it for a few days, you will understand nothing.

My opinion is.  Show effort and you will earn Merits and implicitly grow your account to higher Bitcoin Talk ranks.  This is the best way to do it.  BUT.  The higher ranked you are, the harder it becomes to earn Merits.  You need to continue sharing more and more knowledge, helping out more and proving you deserve more over all.  As a Newbie, I really think it is very easy to grow your account if you show interest in becoming a more reputable Member of the Forum.

Good luck.

This is a nice question from you op and I know you must have seen so many responses
And to add to what others have written there are ranks in this forum starting from newbie to legendary and for you to attain those  ranks you have number of merits to earn in other to achieve that and for you to earn merits , there is need for you to make a quality contribution in any discussion you engage on or starting a new topic with a quality post .

Op this forum is filled with intelligent persons and your post must be quality enough to impress any of the merit source for them to award merits to you.And outside the merits source any member of the forum can also give you merits if he or she has a sendable merits and it all also depend on the quality of your post or contribution as well.

Lastly , before making post I will suggest you read some of the threads of the high ranked members to know how to start a quality post or contribute in a discussion. I will also advice you not to focus on merits now learn to write quality posts and merits  will come when you don’t even expect it . Once again welcome to the forum .

you are welcome to the forum.

Merit is just like a reward for your content. If you post meaningful and constructive content, that will help the forum members merit your post, so for you to get the merit, you are going to take your time in writing or creating posts so that people will give you their smerit. It is also used to determine your rank in the forum. There is a certain number of merits that you will get before you reach the rank. For example, if you have 10 merits with 60 activities, you will be a member rank in the forum, and if you have 100 merits, you will be a full member. and any merit you get, you will get half of it as spendable merit, which you can also send to other people's posts.

But for you to get these merits, you must learn many things on the forum. Since you just joined the forum, I believe engaging in some discussion will be a challenge for you, so you need to learn about crypto currency and some other things. In fact, just take a look at the other people's posts, and you will learn from their posts.

If your goals are to gain knowledge about bitcoin (and cryptocurrencies), as well as to share experiences and communicate on this forum, then in principle you don’t really need merit (there is no need to strive to get it). You can do all this from your Newbie account, except that you can't publish pictures here until you receive Member rank. If you really want, you can get Cooper member rank for a small donation to the forum. So, if you don’t have long-term goals of moving up the rank system, then you can’t even pay attention to merit (as well as activity).

Yeah he's a newbie with about 5 post and 6 activities and from his profile I think the account was created recently hence the question, however I see no wrong in the question he asked cause it's better for someone to ask questions when they got no clue about things in the forum, especially fo newbies. It shows their willingness to learn and as an old member of the forum you're in position to help newbies get more knowledge about the forum.

Yes there are some other important rules and regulations about the forum, but that doesn't mean knowing how the merits works and it's benefits in the forum is not important as well, infact it's one of the most important thing every forum member needs to take note of cause asides the activity the merits is one of the key criteria to ranking up.

Well my advice to newbies is that they should take their time to study the forum properly, learn the policy of the forum and don't fail to ask questions concerning things you come across and have no clue of, there are lots of members that would be willing to guide you through your journey here.

Merits is a system of rewarding people for the quality of their post and when a certain number of it has been accumulated it will be used to rank up on the forum but then before you will be able to rank up well enough, you will need to have a certain amount of activities aswell so in as much as you are Ben merited for the quality of your post, your activities should aswell correspond with the total number of post you have been able to make so it will making you eligible to rank up.

Yo may have to just make sure to study a d increase your knowledge about cryptocurrency and there are many post on the forum that elaborates on things you should know about cryptocurrency and even other aspects of financial activities which will help your knowledge well enough. There are other post too which talks about merits well enough that's if you are not satisfied with this explanation you can always make reference to them in the beginners and help board.

Merits are like tokens, valueless as in the context of money but have great value in terms of rank. As this forum system has a mechanism to rank people on the basis of how much merits they earned. If you have 100 merits then you are full, if you have 250 then you are senior members but not only merits are required but activity as well. Read this post to get an idea.

Forum ranks/positions/badges (What do those shiny coins under my name mean?

Besides ranking, merits are achieved/earned by contributing to the forum, like by providing useful replies, and topics, and bringing something to the forum that makes it more famous I guess. Overall, you have to contribute by legit ways, as fake ways have there own consequences. Best of Luck.

Merit is the forum's currency for appreciation of quality of a user's posts. Besides activity it is also required to level up your account status. If you're only interested in the latter, it will be a hard ride. Not impossible, but hard work. As you pretend to be interested in crypto coin stuff, you should focus more an that than on merit and such.

Learn to use the built-in forum search or use https://ninjastic.space/search which gives you a nice search experience. Don't be lazy and don't ask for spoon feeding, both not very much appreciated here...
If you had searched the Merit topic or followed pinned threads you would've found a lot about it already. Newbies seem to fear search or the effort involved. I'm deliberately maybe a bit provocative...

Try to structure your sentences a bit more, 445 characters in an endless sentence I don't consider reading friendly.

Whoa, let's ease up on the zeal and passion stuff.  This isn't a cult, it's just an online community. A big message board if you know what those are.  Same idea here, we just focus more on certain topics.

Anyway you asked about merit right? Thats basically like getting points for being helpful.  Ask good questions, share useful information, just be a solid member of the community.  Do that and you'll be golden here.

but one of the major problem I'm having now is that I'm not well clarify of what merit entails and as such I will be very grateful if any good minded person can kindly throw more light on that to enable me understand in details and also benefit from the system.
Merit is all about quality, helpfulness, and useful contribution of a member in form of his/her posts/thread. A merit shows that how useful a post is and the posts/threads that get many merits often because they have been helpful for many members. Consider merit as a reward for your contribution on this forum, if you make good, contributive posts/threads, which are helpful for the community then you'll get a reward for your contribution that's a merit given to you by a member of the forum with sMerits.

Most of the sMerits are in the possession of the merit sources because the administrator of the forum Theymos has accepted them as merit source and has allocated a certain amount of merits for those merit sources. If I'm not wrong then all of those merit sources get some spendable merits per month automatically, and then they send those merits to the members who make good posts. If you as a member can make good and valuable posts then you'll also get some merits.

The merit system basically helps signature campaigns and the campaign managers as it's the best step taken against account farmers. If someone who makes low quality posts that aren't helpful at all then that person never gets higher ranks that are needed to qualify for signature campaigns. In simple words, all those members who make low-quality posts that don't get merits may not be able to rank up on the forum if they have created their accounts after the implementation of the merit system.

Since you want to learn and know what merit is really all about,. I don't know much, but with the little knowledge I have about merit, I will tell you for free that it's something that's given to someone based on the kind of post or contribution that the person gives to the forum and someone else, like the idea or knowledge that you shared, and as a result of that, he or she will reward you with merit for a job well done.

And for every merit you earn, you will be given half of it as a spendable merit (which is also referred to as smerit), and this smerit can also be sent to another person whom you might also like and who will want to appreciate it.

Less I forget, this merit is also essential to your rank up on this forum. Aside from the activity requirements, you also need merit before you can obtain a new rank. Every rank requires a certain number of merits that will complement that position.

I can see yah new to this forum , so I will say at first welcome Mate.

I wanted to provide a link that would actually help but I can see that hatchy has already done a great work sending it to you already.

But let me just add some enlightenment, merit is like a way users shows appreciation whenever they found your post  contributing or helpful to them.

One thing you need to know is that the chances of you getting more merit depends on your contribution to the forum and how quality and helpful your post is.

One thing have also took noticed of is that the more you are eager to earn merits the more your chances of you earning any dropped. So all you got to do is to focus on what the forum offers , which Is wide knowledge concerning the Crypto space and the more you learn ,

the more you see yourself growing . And more you see yourself earning merits . Wink

Let's me drop some common tips that would help increase the quality of yah post.

*Always take your time when replying or creating a thread , you have all the time so don't need to be in hurry.

* Always read through all the reply in a post to gain More understanding (due to learning from different sources) and also to avoid repeating what someone has said already, before posting

*Whenever you encounter any thread That you are not too familiar with the concept, is better to not reply and learn more about it than endup going off-topic due to not having a good understanding about that topic
