I just got only 1 merit I don't know what it means and I see some profile with thousands of merits. What does it and how does it come?

You joined this forum more than a year ago. But you do not know, what is merit? This is because you have spent most of the time in the forum in bounty section. You didn't spend much time outside the bounty section so you don't know what merit means.

Merit is an indicator of a good quality post. This means that if you see some merit in a thread or a post, then you must understand that the post or thread must be of good quality. If you post good quality post then you will definitely earn merit.

Now let's talk a little bit about what is sMerit (sendable merit). sMerit is the merit that you can send to others. If you get 1 merit, then your sMerit will be 0.5 which means half of the merit you will get will be added to your sMerit. However, you cannot send a fraction of 0.5, 1.5 such merit to others. You can only send the full number of merits (1, 2, 5 etc) to others. To see your Merit and sMerit Balance, visit..

I would struggle to post in the Altcoin section even if there were a continuous overwhelming flow of merits. There is a limit to everything, intellectual prostitution included. I would rather take pride in something like “ legendary outside altcoins”...

A lot of the weirdest and most interesting stuff by far happens in the altcoin section. It's wading through the noise and hysteria that makes it an unbearable experience. That's one section that could really use a Reddit-style thread upvoting system to find the good content.

But if you're committed to ranking up your account you need to limit the energy you put into it. It's a shame there isn't more possibility of reward in there for the good posts.

Merits and the number of posts decides your rank in this forum. The more merits you have the higher your rank. Merits are basically rewards which are distributed by fellow members depending on your topic or reply here.

Therefore always create great topics and be helpfull to anyone here with your replies.

After you have been on forum long enough and are wel known snowball effect works for you, that's how some people have thousands of merit

This is definitely a factor for some accounts with vast amounts of merit. There are lots of subcultures on here and some of them are made up of nothing but accounts that were senior before the merit system arrived.

<...>

Some of them.
Some others gained their merits outside those groups.
When I started my journey here on bitcointalk I had zero merits and zero friends.
What I want to say, to the OP, not to you @gentlemand, is that having friends might help, but it’s not a condition to get merits, and if ever the snowball effect exists, the effort on post quality content for sure pays off better in the long run at getting merits.

I checked your merit received history and some names repeat a lot. After you have been on forum (any other field) you automatically create connections and those connections help you climb higher.

If I were intent on growing my merit score - and I'm not, the only meaningful figure to me was 1000 earned - there are places I wouldn't bother devoting my energy to like the altcoin sections. There are areas where it definitely flows more than others.

Well merit is requirement for you to rank up. And in my opinion getting merit is not easy as it could be. It takes a hardship before you can acquire it like average posters like me. Anyway, I am okay with my current rank and does not wanted to rank up to higher ranks. I can get to use of it and happy that I am earning cents with the campaign I join.

Still if given a chance to rank up then yes sure why not. I can't just get enough merits like those quality posters did here in the forum. You can observe how they do it and follow on how and what they did.

Of course. You've done it the long and hard way. Most others got a bit of a shortcut and gave each other a leg up too.

Many never step outside their groups so you have people who started off with large amounts of merits they were airdropped batting that merit back and forth between each other. A lot of the stuff they merit each other for is in jokes or one liners, or simply agreeing with the point of view that's fashionable among them, that would never be merited outside that club.

Well, it is good to know for the sake of knowledge but merit shouldn't be the first thing newbies (like me) to consider. Providing value to the community comes first above all.

This is the first reasonable post in your post history, almost worth a few merits.
Problem is, to do so I have to disregard everything you wrote in the Alt board, included the POS>POW nonsense.
So the merits I would have given to you for this posts are more than offsets by be “negative merits” you earned for the other posts.
Really sorry.

With close to 4000 merits, you definitely are one of the profiles op is referring to.
The merit score of your profile will tell us how good the poster you are, how faithful you are.
Concerning the quote above, it's not something you can deduce instantly by the merits the profile has. You have to consider that at the time when merits was introduced in January 2018, merits were airdropped to users only on their activity then, not quality (bear in mind that, some of those users have not earned any after that). Accounts also change hands sometimes; users farm accounts to high ranks to sell them to others who may/may not be quality posters. That being said, other than this, merit score can be used to come to your conclusion above 99% out of 100.

When you make a post that deserves merit, the high rank members of the forum will give you merit. And for every two merits you earn, you can give one merit to others. However, if you send merit, the merit of your profile will not decrease.

You can spend more and more time in the forum and gradually you will understand everything.

I'm just curious how you got to know much about the emboldened words.

I just got only 1 merit I don't know what it means.

This means recognition of your good work in the forum. And you can get this recognition for the following reasons ..
1. Creating informative threads.
2. Good quality comments.
3. Help anyone in the forum who asks for help.
4. Bursting scam.

What does it and how does it come?

Merit is the recognition of your good work.
Why is merit needed in the forum?
1. To rank up your profile.
2. To gain trust in the forum.

The merit score of your profile will tell us how good the poster you are, how faithful you are.

A reward for hard work as per quality content creation or post that helps you grow in rank in this forum. Just like every reward, it is earned and not beg for! But then, for everyone you gain, it lives you with a part of it to send out.

It doesn't have to be hard work and often you can tell when someone is busting a gut and it's something of a turn off. If you write what you think other people want to read you can end up satisfying no one.

The best thing you can do is be yourself. Follow and develop your own interests. Don't pretend to be someone you're not and don't pander to others either. And a good question is just as relevant as a florid answer.

I couldn't sponsor the merit system more than anyone here on the thread already did.
Just adding my story, so that you can know it is possible to rank up starting from zero, exactly what I did.
Ranking up is possible! 2600 Merits earned in less than 12 months! My 11 Hints!
