I think the cause of depression is too much stress that you encounter. For example too much effort that you given to your work but no one appreciate it. You will become depress.

Recurring trauma, as well as lack of communication with family members can make a person experience mental stress that will ultimately make the person depressed.

The following factors are among other factors that can cause depression

Family history – Depression can run in families and some people will be at an increased genetic risk. However, having a parent or close relative with depression doesn’t mean you’ll automatically have the same experience. Life circumstances and other personal factors are still likely to have an important influence.

Personality – Some people may be more at risk of depression because of their personality, particularly if they have a tendency to worry a lot, have low self-esteem, are perfectionists, are sensitive to personal criticism, or are self-critical and negative.

Serious medical illness – The stress and worry of coping with a serious illness can lead to depression, especially if you’re dealing with long-term management and/or chronic pain.

Drug and alcohol use – Drug and alcohol use can both lead to and result from depression. Many people with depression also have drug and alcohol problems. Over 500,000 Australians will experience depression and a substance use disorder at the same time, at some point in their lives.

The Depression sometimes  runs in families and may be due to heredity, learned behavior or both. Even with a genetic predisposition, it is usually a stressful or unhappy life event that triggers the onset of a depressive episode. While the exact causes of depression are unknown, several factors appear to affect its onset!
It can be due to several reasons: You are stressed too much, or you are under pressure from your work, leading to depression.

The etiology of depression may come in different forms but are categorized into two major groups - the pathological causes and non-pathologic causes. Pathologic causes may result from any disease or pathogen that affect the part of the human CNS responsible for being active, alive and ability to cope with stressors. The non-pathologic may result from continuously hovering or worrying about an event that leads to sadness and anxiety.
