Keep in mind that any free email services are not going to be as reliable when it comes to your security as a paid service will be.

Mail.com is easy to use IMO, I think it's owned by 1and1 a big domain provider too. They ask for a phone number in registration but they didn't ask for it to be verified in registration or during use/checking e-mails etc...

Quite frankly, I've found that they all suck. I'd even be willing to pay for one if it was decent

Any thoughts on "GMX"?

Believe its a German email provider, only issue I have had is due to having multiple email accounts they sometimes shut it down and ask me to contact them.
Which I never get a response for but I was told they are secure.

You can avoid using a cellphone in Yahoo as far as I know,I think most of public e-mail providers won't ask for phone number to be confirmed unless you register from a suspicious IP like a known Tor exit node or a proxy etc...

i am using yahoo for mail and it is asking me for phone number all the time but i just skip the step. I don’t see the reason why I should  provide them with my phone number, The mail is functioning great without the phone number verification

I am using both gmail and Yahoo and like them, you do need to provide your phone number but there are plenty of online numbers for verification etc...
