It depends on your risk appetite. If you prefer high risk investment, I would suggest som hot ICO Dadi, Fintrux, Nex...If you're averse to risks, top 10 (ETH, NEO) will be the safe bet.

If i had $500 to invest in cryptocurency now i will put my dices in Steemit; BitShares; Zencash and maybe EOS. My picks for growing strong in 2018. But the best is to search and study in order to make an educated investment.

You can try to invest with cheap altcoin like ripple and waves this is a potential coin that possible to increase more price in the future. You can make a research so you can know what is cheao altcoin good to invest. You are newbie so you can start now by doing your own research . buy 200$ for ripple leave it on you wallet for long term,and the another 300 can split into 2 ,150$ for TIO and 150$ for lite coins.since this two alts doing some movements so just buy when drop and sell when grow.focus for days and you can find profit . I kind of understand your predicament, so many good projects out there. But even though ICOs are tricky to predict nowadays, if you are willing to weather the storms then placing your trust in a solid product like Augur, PRL and even the upcoming Arcblock can have great returns in the long run.
You should determine your $ 500 as long or short term investment.
